Amelioration of radiation-induced oral cavity mucositis and distant bone marrow suppression in fanconi anemia Fancd2-/- (FVB/N) mice by intraoral GS-nitroxide JP4-039.

The altered DNA damage response pathway in patients with Fanconi anemia (FA) may increase the toxicity of clinical radiotherapy. We quantitated oral cavity mucositis in irradiated Fanconi anemia Fancd2(-/-) mice, comparing this to Fancd2(+/-) and Fancd2(+/+) mice, and we measured distant bone marrow suppression and quantitated the effect of the intraoral radioprotector GS-nitroxide, JP4-039 in F15 emulsion. We found that FA mice were more susceptible to radiation injury and that protection from radiation injury by JP4-039/F15 was observed at all radiation doses. Adult 10-12-week-old mice, of F

Comparison of femoral neck system and three cannulated cancellous screws in the treatment of vertical femoral neck fractures: clinical observation and finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical and clinical results of two surgical methods for the treatment of vertical femoral neck fractures: Femoral neck system (FNS) and traditional three cannulated cancellous screws (CCS). METHODS: First, we developed three different vertical femoral neck fracture models for the finite element analysis, with angles of 55°, 65°, and 75°, respectively. Two experimental groups were set up: the FNS group and the CCS group. Each fracture group was tested under axial loads of 2100 N to measure the femur's displacement, Von Mises stress

Cold Welding of the Synthes Femoral Neck System Encountered at Conversion to Arthroplasty: A Case Report.

CASE: The Synthes Femoral Neck System (FNS) is a relatively new device available to the market in 2019 designed to reduce complication and revision rates after femoral neck fracture stabilization. We present a 77-year-old man with Parkinson disease and avascular necrosis after femoral neck fracture initially managed with the FNS. Subsequent challenges in device removal occurred because of its propensity for bony integration, plate and locking screw welding, and screw head recess destruction. CONCLUSION: Surgeons must recognize the need for additional available equipment (e.g., burr or broken

A biomechanical comparison of three fixation methods for unstable femoral neck fractures with medial calcar defect.

BACKGROUND: Unstable femoral neck fractures with medial calcar defects are difficult to manage. The optimal fixation methods for these fractures have been a subject of ongoing debate among orthopedic surgeons. In this study, three different fixation techniques for vertical, medial defected femoral neck fractures were compared. METHODS: In this study, a biomechanical analysis was conducted to compare three fixation methods: cannulated screws (Group 1), cannulated screws combined with a medial buttress plate (Group 2), and intramedullary nails (Group 3). Synthetic composite bone models represen

Discordance in Secular Trends of Bone Mineral Density Measurements in Different Ages of Postmenopausal Women.

BACKGROUND: Age-adjusted bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women decreases in developed countries whereas incidence of osteoporot … t (BMC), and T-score demonstrated a declining trend over the survey period at lumbar spine (-2.8%), femur neck (-3.5%) and total femur (-4.3%), respectively. In the analysis for the age groups, the BMD, BMC, and T-score presented linear declining trend (-6.1%) in younger postmenopausal women while women aged over 70 or more showed linear increasing trends (+ …

[Anatomic study of the anterior patellar groove in the fetal period].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: We performed a biometric analysis of the femoral trochlea in the fetus and compared our findings with those observed in adults in order to search for correlations with other biometric parameters of the femur. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Twenty-two fetuses (44 knees) conserved in formol and free of known orthopedic disease were studied. Fetal age ranged from 26 to 40 weeks. After anatomic dissection, digitalized images were used to obtain angle measurements with a dedicated software. Measurements made on the distal epiphyseal view were: anteroposterior dimension of the condyles,

Effects of intertrochanteric osteotomy plane and preoperative femoral anteversion on the postoperative morphology of the proximal femur in transtrochanteric anterior rotational osteotomy: 3D CT-based simulation study.

BACKGROUND: Transtrochanteric anterior rotational osteotomy (ARO) is joint-preserving surgery for patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). During ARO, femoral neck-shaft varus angulation by changing intertrochanteric osteotomy plane is often designed to obtain a sufficient postoperative intact ratio. However, the effect of intertrochanteric osteotomy plane on postoperative femoral anteversion has not been well examined. Therefore, we performed a simulation study of ARO to determine how intertrochanteric osteotomy plane and preoperative femoral anteversion affect both femoral nec

[Epidemiology of fractures of the proximal femur].

Fractures of the upper end of the femur constitute a major public health problem which, for demographic reasons, will become worse during the next decades. The clinical determination of femoral neck fractures is imperfectly known. Two factors seem to be determinant: bone fragility and fall, but these factors are frequent in the elderly and other factors seem to intervene, notably the modality of the impact and the protection reflexes during the fall. The epidemiology of proximal femur fractures therefore cannot be restricted to the diminution of bone mass. Beside age and female sex, the confir

Biomechanical structure-function relations for human trabecular bone - comparison of calcaneus, femoral neck, greater trochanter, proximal tibia, and vertebra.

MicroCT-based finite element models were used to compute power law relations for uniaxial compressive yield stress versus bone volume fraction for 78 cores of human trabecular bone from five anatomic sites. The leading coefficient of the power law for calcaneus differed from those for most of the other sites (p < 0.05). However, after normalizing by site-specific mean values, neither the leading coefficient (p > 0.5) nor exponent (p > 0.5) differed among sites, suggesting that a given percentage deviation from mean bone volume fraction has the same mechanical consequence for all sites investig

Femoral head wedge resection for the treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head after pediatric femoral neck fracture: a case report.

This research focuses on femoral head wedge resection for the treatment of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head. A 9-year-old girl presented to the emergency room complaining of right hip pain that occurred after a pedestrian car accident. After 8 months of internal fixation using cannulated screws for Delbet-type 2 fracture of the femoral neck, AVN of the femoral head developed in the patient. Even though valgus-derotation-extension intertrochanteric osteotomy was performed for the treatment of AVN, it progressed further and femoral head wedge resection was performed to recover the fe

Experimental study of an original radiographic view for diagnosis of cam-type anterior femoroacetabular impingement.

PURPOSE: Primary paraclinical investigation to look for femoral morphological abnormality consistent with cam-type anterior femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) must include specific radiographic projections of the hip from the following: cross-table, frog-leg or Dunn (90° and 45° flexion). We use a frog-leg type view with fixed angles as described by Chiron, obtained with the patient in a supine position, with the hip in 45° flexion-abduction and 30° external rotation. The X-ray beam is anteroposterior and centred on the femoral head. We evaluated this view by comparing it with other views in c

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The mechanical function of the periosteum: new aspects and theory including bilaterality.

This particular ailment has many designations in the literature but none is quite adequate. Here we use the terminology slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). The anatomy of the proximal femur in all mammals reflects their growth and function. The main forces acting on the head are perpendicular to the growth plate. The thick tear-proof perichondrium-periosteum on the femoral neck is like a stocking attached to the epiphysis and the trochanter region. Growth in length causes a strong tensile stress in the periosteum, pressing the epiphysis against the metaphysis and thus stabilizing the vul

[Valgus deformity of the femoral neck after nailing of infantile femoral shaft fractures (author's transl)].

In 6 patients out of 29 who had suffered fractures of the femoral shaft at childs age and were treated mainly by open nailing, considerable growth disturbances of the major trochanter and valgus deformities of the neck of the femur had been observed in check-ups. The origin and prevention of these complications in nailing and nailremoval are discussed.

Origin of Cam Morphology in Femoroacetabular Impingement.

Cam morphology of the proximal femur is an abnormal contour of the femoral head-neck junction present in approximately 15% to 25% of the asymptomatic population, predominantly in males. Alpha angle and femoral head-neck offset ratio are 2 objective measurement tools that define cam morphology. Both primary (idiopathic) and secondary cam deformity develops through distinct mechanisms. The cause of primary (idiopathic) cam morphology remains incompletely understood. Mounting evidence suggests that idiopathic cam morphology develops during adolescence through alterations in the capital femoral ep
