[structure: see text] Lambertella sp. 1346 was found to produce lambertellols A (1) and B (2) carrying a novel dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-ones with spiro-1-furan-2(5'H)-one. The spiro-lactone ring moiety of both 1 and 2 were easily migrated to afford lambertellin, a known metabolite of Lambertella corni-maris. The absolute stereochemistry of these compounds was established on the basis of CD spectrum after chemical derivatization.

In this work, screening of Lauraceae species for their antifungal activity against Collectotrichum tamarilloi was carried out and the ethanol extract derived from the bark of Endlicheria arenosa was found to be the best candidate. In this work, I describe the effects of parthenolide, a naturally occurring sesquiterpene lactone, on radiolabeled cocaine binding and on radiolabeled dopamine uptake in the human dopamine transporter expressed on HEK-293 cells (HEK/DAT cells). Parthenolide displaces radiolabeled cocaine in a concentration-dependent manner and does not display any significant inhibition of radiolabeled dopamine uptake. Further, parthenolide seems to alleviate the inhibition of dopamine uptake by 5 μM unlabeled cocaine at sub-toxic parthenolide concentrations.

The substrate scope of the asymmetric allylation with zinc organyls catalyzed by 3,3-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)-1,1-binaphthyl-2,2-diyl hydrogenphosphate (TRIP) has been extended to non-cyclic ester organozinc reagents and ketones. Tertiary chiral alcohols are obtained with ee's up to 94% and two stereogenic centers can be created. Compared to the previous lactone reagent the stereopreference switches almost completely, proving the fact that the nature of the organometallic compound is of immense importance for the asymmetry of the product.

A butenolide-containing sugar available from the aldol condensation of methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-alpha-D-glucopyranosid-2-ulose with diethyl malonate is autoxidized at the C-3 position into the corresponding alpha,beta-unsaturated gamma-lactone sugar by air, which subsequently undergoes 1,4-conjugate (Michael) addition of hydroxide ion (or water) leading to a C-branched-chain glucopyranosidulose. The autoxidations are also performed in weakly basic, neutral and weakly acidic medium, respectively.

Total synthesis and determination of absolute configuration of colletotrichumolide 2 and its 3R-diastereomer 3 have been achieved by Julia-Kociennski olefination, Shiina lactonization, chemo- and regioselective epoxide opening, and Mitsunobu reaction as key steps. Synthesized compounds (2-3) were tested for their antibacterial activity against two of the most resilient bacterial strains, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus, and they were found to show significant antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. faecalis cell lines.

The first total syntheses of the natural products lobaric acid (1) and its derivatives isolated from the Antarctic lichen Stereocaulon alpinum are reported in this study. Lobarin (3), with a pseudodepsidone structure, was synthesized first in 11 steps by utilizing an Ullmann aryl ether coupling reaction, and lobaric acid was synthesized in an additional three steps by a seven-membered lactonization reaction. Various derivatives were also obtained from the prepared lobaric acid, and the synthetic compounds exhibited significant PTP1B inhibitory activities.

Certain group VIIIB transition metal compounds were found to inhibit cell division in Escherichia coli, causing marked filamentous growth. Gram-negative bacilli were the most sensitive to this effect, whereas gram-positive bacilli responded only at near-toxic levels of the metal. None of the cocci tested showed any apparent effect. Cytokinesis (cross-septation) can be initiated by removal or decrease of platinum, but not by treatment with pantoyl lactone, divalent cations, or a temperature of 42 C.
