Can the causal model approach contribute to the study of the epidemiology and the control of sleeping sickness?

A causal model links together, in an hierarchical manner, a set of hypotheses about the causes of, and mechanisms leading to, a phenomenon under study. Initially used in nutrition studies for identifying the variables to be observed, such models have proven useful in the choice and evaluation of interventions, as well as in the selection of relevant special studies to be carried out inside a broader research programme. The authors describe a technique of model building used by nutritionists, and argue that this approach could be of benefit in the study and control of african trypanosomiasis. T

A tutorial on selecting, translating, and reporting variance priors in Bayesian multilevel models.

Bayesian multilevel models are increasingly used in psychological, educational, and behavioral research, yet applied guidance on specifying priors for scalar variance components remains limited. This tutorial provides a practical workflow for identifying target variance components, selecting benchmark values, calibrating priors on variance and standard-deviation scales, translating them into software-compatible prior specifications, evaluating their implications through prior predictive checks, posterior comparison, sensitivity analysis, and transparent reporting. We review several commonly us

Generalized additive model integrating multi-source data for short-term influenza forecasting in Shenzhen, China (2023-2025).

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped the global epidemiology of respiratory infectious diseases, posing new challenges for influenza forecasting. Existing studies are often limited by reliance on single data sources, poor interpretability, or failure to account for nonlinear relationships among variables, which restricts their ability to balance prediction accuracy and practical utility for public health decision-making. This study aimed to develop and validate a multisource data-integrated generalized additive model (GAM) to forecast influenza activity in Shenzhen, China. METHODS:

p-Uniform* is an estimator of the three-parameter selection model: Commentary on van Aert and van Assen (2026).

Van Aert and Van Assen (2026) introduced a novel method called p-uniform* for estimating average effect size in meta-analyses subject to publication bias. They characterized the method as a distinct, more parsimonious model than the well-known three-parameter selection model (3PSM) of Hedges (1992). I argue that p-uniform* is not a distinct model, but rather a different estimator of the average effect size and heterogeneity parameters of the 3PSM. The p-uniform* estimator coincides with the maximum likelihood estimator of the 3PSM when all included effects have identical sampling variances; ot

Signpost Testing to Navigate the Parameter Space of the Gaussian Graphical Model With High-Dimensional Data.

We evaluate the relevance of external quantitative information on the parameter of a Gaussian graphical model from high-dimensional data. This information comes in the form of a parameter value available from a related knowledge domain or population. We contrast the external information to 'null' information, i.e., an internally accepted parameter value. The direction from a null to this externally provided parameter value is dubbed the signpost. The signpost test evaluates whether to follow the signpost in the search of the true parameter value. We present various test statistics to measure t

Regression analysis of misclassified current status data with potentially unknown test accuracy.

Current status data are frequently encountered in many real life cross-sectional epidemiological, demographic, and medical studies, where each subject is examined only once, and the failure time of interest is never exactly observed but known to be either smaller or larger than the examination time for each subject by evaluating the failure status. Consequently, current status data are a mixture of left-censored and right-censored observations for the failure times of all subjects with or without covariates. In some real life studies, the test or diagnosis that is used to determine the failure

Using Latent Representations to Link Disjoint Longitudinal Data for Mixed-Effects Regression.

Many rare diseases offer limited established treatment options, leading patients to switch therapies when new medications emerge. To analyze the impact of such treatment switches within the low sample size limitations of rare disease trials, it is important to use all available data sources. This, however, is complicated when the use of measurement instruments changes during the observation period, for example when instruments are adapted to specific age ranges. The resulting disjoint longitudinal data trajectories complicate the application of traditional modeling approaches like mixed-effect

Scalable randomized kernel methods for multiview data integration and prediction with application to Coronavirus disease.

There is still more to learn about the pathobiology of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) despite 4 years of the pandemic. A multiomics approach offers a comprehensive view of the disease and has the potential to yield deeper insight into the pathogenesis of the disease. Previous multiomics integrative analysis and prediction studies for COVID-19 severity and status have assumed simple relationships (ie linear relationships) between omics data and between omics and COVID-19 outcomes. However, these linear methods do not account for the inherent underlying nonlinear structure associated with these

Representing subpopulations with latent profile analysis: a non-technical introduction using exercisers' goal orientation adoption profiles.

Latent profile analysis (LPA) is in the finite mixture model analysis family and identifies subgroups by participants' responses to continuous variables (i.e., indicators); participants' probable membership in each subgroup is based on the similarity between the subgroup's prototypical responses and the person's unique responses. Compared to latent class analysis (LCA) with categorical data, LPA is a better fit for many variables and theories in behavioral medicine, because LPA can have continuous item, sub-scale, or scale scores as indicators, which can enable identifying and examining subgro

Developing and Comparing Four Families of Bayesian Network Autocorrelation Models for Binary Outcomes: Estimating Peer Effects Involving Adoption of Medical Technologies.

Despite the extensive use of network autocorrelation models in social network analysis, network autocorrelation models for binary dependent variables have received surprisingly scant attention. In this paper, we develop four network autocorrelation models for a binary random variable defined by whether the peer effect (also termed social influence or contagion) acts on latent continuous outcomes leading to an indirect effect under a normal or a logistic distribution or on the probability of the observed outcome itself under a probit or a logit link function defining a direct effect to account

Forecasting malaria dynamics based on causal relations between control interventions, climatic factors, and disease incidence in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases worldwide, especially among young children in sub-Saharan Africa. Predictive models are necessary for effective planning and resource allocation; however, statistical models suffer from association pitfalls. In this study, we used empirical dynamic modelling (EDM) to investigate causal links between climatic factors and intervention coverage with malaria for short-term forecasting. METHODS: Based on data spanning the period from 2008 to 2022, we used convergent cross-mapping (CCM) to identify suitable lags for climatic drivers and inve

Optimal two-time point longitudinal models for estimating individual-level change: Asymptotic insights and practical implications.

Based on findings from a simulation study, Parsons and McCormick (2024) argued that growth models with exactly two time points are poorly-suited to model individual differences in linear slopes in developmental studies. Their argument is based on an empirical investigation of the increase in precision to measure individual differences in linear slopes if studies are progressively extended by adding an extra measurement occasion after one unit of time (e.g., year) has passed. They concluded that two-time point models are inadequate to reliably model change at the individual level and that these

Killing Two Birds with One Stone: Accounting for Unfolding Item Response Process and Response Styles Using Unfolding Item Response Tree Models.

Two research streams on responses to Likert-type items have been developing in parallel: (a) unfolding models and (b) individual response styles (RSs). To accurately understand Likert-type item responding, it is vital to parse unfolding responses from RSs. Therefore, we propose the Unfolding Item Response Tree (UIRTree) model. First, we conducted a Monte Carlo simulation study to examine the performance of the UIRTree model compared to three other models - Samejima's Graded Response Model, Generalized Graded Unfolding Model, and Dominance Item Response Tree model, for Likert-type responses. Analysis and forecasting of syphilis trends in mainland China based on hybrid time series models.

Syphilis remains a serious public health problem in mainland China that requires attention, modelling to describe and predict its prevalence patterns can help the government to develop more scientific interventions. The seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model, long short-term memory network (LSTM) model, hybrid SARIMA-LSTM model, and hybrid SARIMA-nonlinear auto-regressive models with exogenous inputs (SARIMA-NARX) model were used to simulate the time series data of the syphilis incidence from January 2004 to November 2023 respectively. Compared to the SARIMA, LSTM, an

Critical behavior and the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a musical phase transition.

We investigate the critical phenomena emerging from a statistical mechanics model of musical harmony on a three-dimensional (3D) lattice, and the resulting structure of the ordered phase. In this model, each lattice site represents a tone, with nearest neighbors interacting via the perception of dissonance between them. With dissonance assumed to be an octave-wise periodic function of pitch difference, this model is a 3D XY system with the same symmetry and dimensionality as superfluid helium and models of the cosmological axion field. We use numerical simulation to observe a phase transition

[Application of autoregressive integrated moving average model to predict and analyze the incidence trend of mumps in Jiangxi Province].

Objective: To predict and analyze the incidence trend of mumps using the Autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA) in Jiangxi Province. Methods: The ARIMA was used to model the number of mumps cases per month from 2015 to 2019 in Jiangxi Province. The number of mumps cases in 12 months was predicted and was compared with the actual reported cases in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively. Results: The optimal model was ARIMA (0,2,1)(1,2,0)12. The predicted number of cases was significantly higher than that reported in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The number of reported cases of mumps in 2020,
