Malignant Transformation of Warthin Tumor in the Cervical Lymph Node.

Warthin tumor is the second most common benign tumor of salivary glands. Here we present an interesting case of squamous cell carcinoma arising from the Warthin tumor in the cervical lymph node. The patient had another Warthin tumor in the parotid gland as well. Both the malignant transformation of Warthin tumor and the heterotopic occurrence of Warthin tumor in the cervical lymph node are rare. This exceptionally rare case demonstrates that the 2 rare clinical entities can occur simultaneously and affect clinical decisions.

Topography and probability diagram of cervical and intra-parotid lymph node metastasis in parotid gland cancer.

In parotid gland cancer (PGC), cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM) and intra-parotid LNM are known as significant indicators of poor prognosis. However, the topography of LNM in the affected parotid gland and the lymphatic progression of PGC has never been explored in detail. This was a retrospective analysis of data from 423 patients with previously untreated primary PGC (2005 to 2020), excluding patients with squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma or metastatic disease in the parotid gland. The pattern of LNM was analyzed by neck sub-level and parotid sub-site. Using the conditional probability

Two-Lines-Four-Regions: A New Concept in Endoscopic-Assisted Surgery of Parotid Gland Tumors.

PURPOSE: Endoscopic-assisted surgery of parotid gland tumor is challenging due to the complex anatomic structures. This study compared an innovative endoscopic-assisted operation called the two-lines-four-regions method to a traditional endoscopic-assisted surgery in the treatment of parotid gland tumors. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, patients were assigned to the traditional endoscopic group (Trad-En group) and the two-lines-four-regions endoscopic group (Tlfr-En group) according to whether two-lines-four-regions concept was used before the surgery. The primary outcomes are op

[Surgery for parotid gland cancer-controversial and proven aspects].

BACKGROUND: Due to the rarity of primary parotid malignancies, there are currently only limited clinical study data on the optimal surgical therapy. Parotid malignancies encompass a broad spectrum of more than 20 different histological subtypes with varying biology, which thus represents a challenge for even experienced pathologists and head and neck surgeons with proven expertise in salivary gland surgery. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review article is to provide an overview of the current literature on surgical therapy of the primary tumor and the cN0 neck as well as treatment of the facial n

Synchronous bilateral multifocal basal cell adenomas of the parotid gland-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral parotid gland tumors account for up to 3% of cases. In this group, the vast majority are Warthin's tumors. However, bilateral presentations of other parotid gland tumor entities is also possible, an example of which is a basal cell adenoma (BCA). Bilateral BCA is extremely rare, which could cause misdiagnosing it as a Warthin tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: The current study reports the unique case of a 48-year-old woman who presented with a 6-month history of slowly growing masses located bilaterally in the parotid region, surgically treated with 5-year follow-up (no recurren

Sclerosing polycystic sialadenopathy: a rare cause of recurrent tumor of the parotid gland.

We present a case report of a woman with a recurrent parotid mass that was histologically confirmed to be sclerosing polycystic sialadenopathy, a rarely reported cause of salivary gland tumor. This tumor measured 11.8 x 6 cm, the largest such lesion yet reported. Histologic analysis revealed foci of atypical intraductal acinic cell proliferation and necrosis severe enough to amount to intraductal carcinoma in situ. Despite its large size, it was successfully excised, leaving the patient with only moderate facial nerve dysfunction postoperatively.

Intraparotid node metastasis affects the long-term survival of patients with resectable recurrent parotid gland carcinoma.

PURPOSE: The recurrence rate of parotid gland cancer is high, but research on the prognosis of recurrent parotid gland cancer (RPC) is relatively limited. We aim to determine the potential prognosis factors of RPC. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis. SETTING: Tertiary cancer center. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review from 2012 to 2021 on RPC patients treated at the China National Cancer Center (CNCC). To analyze the impact of various variables on overall survival (OS) after recurrence, a univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard model was employed. RESULTS: A t

Parapharyngeal lipoma: a case report.

A 44-years-old male presented with right infraauricular swelling. It had been four months since he was aware of the mass. He had not felt any pain or tenderness. Computed tomograpy demonstrated a homogenous, regular surfaced mass located in the prestyloid and poststyloid parapharyngeal space. Its density was concordant with lipomatous tissue, so it was considered to be an infiltrating parapharyngeal lipoma. Postoperative diagnosis revealed a similar result. We believe that computed tomograpy is an effective method of diagnosing parapharyngeal space tumors and tansparotid approach for this loca

Detection of Epstein-Barr virus genome in sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma by use of in situ hybridization.

Associations between Epstein-Barr virus and undifferentiated carcinomas of nasopharynx, parotid gland, and thymus have recently been reported. Epstein-Barr virus has also been associated with malignant lymphoma of the nose and paranasal sinuses. These findings raise the possibility that Epstein-Barr virus may additionally be linked to undifferentiated carcinoma of the nose and paranasal sinuses (SNUC), an uncommon but distinctive and highly aggressive neoplasm. Histologically, SNUC consists of small and medium cells, the precise characterization of which often requires immunocytochemical analy

Metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma to the pleura: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm arising from the salivary glands (Ali et al. in J Ayub Med Coll Abbottabad 20(2): 141-2, 2008, Xi et al. in World J Surg Oncol 10: 232, 2012). When arising from anatomic sites other than the salivary glands it can be a diagnostic challenge. Primary and metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma from and to the pleura are extremely rare entities that are frequently misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma (Xi et al. in World J Surg Oncol 10: 232, 2012). CASE PRESENTATION: We describe

Minimally invasive retroauricular approach parotidectomy: A pictorial essay.

The surgical approach to a parotid neoplasm has traditionally been taught through a modified-Blair incision. This approach results in a visible scar in the preauricular, retromandibular, and upper neck skin. Various modifications have been undertaken which aim to improve cosmesis either by decreasing overall incision length and/or relocation of the incision to the hairline via what is commonly described as a "facelift approach". We describe a novel minimally invasive parotidectomy approach which utilizes a single retroauricular incision. This approach eliminates both the preauricular scar as w

Pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

Salivary gland tumors are rare, accounting for 6% to 8% of head and neck tumors. Detecting them in primary care is important so that adequate treatment can be provided. This case report describes a 58-year-old woman whose unilateral pulsatile tinnitus and ear fullness led to the diagnosis of a salivary gland tumor, specifically a pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

[Myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland: a rare tumor with diagnostic challenges].

We report on the occurrence of a myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) of the parotid gland in a 58-year-old female patient, 6 years after total parotidectomy of a locoregional myoepithelioma. Due to the rapid growth in the former resection area, panendoscopy and tumor extirpation of the right parotid region were performed. From a histomorphological and cytomorphological point of view, a hyalinized clear cell carcinoma of the salivary gland was originally diagnosed. After further immunohistochemical investigations and preparation of deeper section levels the morphological picture and immunohistochemica
