Self-masking and overlap-masking from reverberation using the speech-evoked auditory brainstem response.

This study introduces an improved method to investigate the effects of reverberation using the speech-evoked auditory brainstem response (ABR) that more realistically captures the influence of self- and overlap-masking induced by room reverberation. Speech-evoked ABR was measured under three acoustic scenarios: anechoic, mild reverberation with dominance of early reflections, and severe reverberation with dominance of late reverberation. Responses were significantly weaker and had longer latencies with severe reverberation relative to anechoic and mild reverberation. Although larger responses

Developing an assessment approach for perceptual changes to tinnitus sound characteristics for adult cochlear implant recipients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of cochlear implantation on tinnitus suppression, characteristics, localization, and duration. DESIGN: A cochlear implant (CI) recipient-focused postal questionnaire survey. STUDY SAMPLE: The questionnaire was posted, with consent, to 100 adults who had received a unilateral CI at the RNTNEH between 1988 and 1999. All adults spoke English as their first language and were postlingually deafened. Sixty-eight adults (38 female, 29 male, one unspecified) aged 31-80 years (mean 61 years) completed and returned the questionnaire without interview. RESULTS: Wit

Changes in otoacoustic emissions during selective auditory and visual attention.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) measured during behavioral tasks can have different magnitudes when subjects are attending selectively or not attending. The implication is that the cognitive and perceptual demands of a task can affect the first neural stage of auditory processing-the sensory receptors themselves. However, the directions of the reported attentional effects have been inconsistent, the magnitudes of the observed differences typically have been small, and comparisons across studies have been made difficult by significant procedural differen

Recovery characteristics of the electrically stimulated auditory nerve in deafened guinea pigs: relation to neuronal status.

Successful cochlear implant performance requires adequate responsiveness of the auditory nerve to prolonged pulsatile electrical stimulation. Degeneration of the auditory nerve as a result of severe hair cell loss could considerably compromise this ability. The main objective of this study was to characterize the recovery of the electrically stimulated auditory nerve, as well as to evaluate possible changes caused by deafness-induced degeneration. To this end we studied temporal responsiveness of the auditory nerve in a guinea pig model of sensorineural hearing loss. Using masker-probe and pul

Recovery from on- and off-frequency forward masking in listeners with normal and impaired hearing.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible mechanisms underlying an effect reported earlier [Wojtczak, M., and Oxenham, A. J. (2009). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 125, 270-281] in normal-hearing listeners, whereby recovery from forward masking can be slower for off-frequency tonal maskers than for on-frequency tonal maskers that produce the same amount of masking at a 0-ms masker-signal delay. To rule out potential effects of confusion between the tonal signal and tonal masker, one condition used a noise-band forward masker. To test whether the effect involved temporal build-up, another cond

Noise Management Preferences During Long-Term Hearing Aid Usage and Their Relation to Audiologic Factors.

Preferences for advanced hearing aid (HA) noise management features, such as directionality and noise reduction (DIR + NR), differ significantly among users. Due to the lack of standardized clinical guidelines for fine-tuning these features, audiologists often rely on individual user preferences. However, this approach doesn't always ensure optimal hearing outcomes. The goal of this study was to examine how users respond to these advanced features in everyday acoustic environments, with two main goals: to assess how sensitive users are to changes in DIR + NR settings compared to subtle gain ad

Aging of the medial olivocochlear reflex and associations with speech perception.

The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) modulates cochlear amplifier gain and is thought to facilitate the detection of signals in noise. High-resolution distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were recorded in teens, young, middle-aged, and elderly adults at moderate levels using primary tones swept from 0.5 to 4 kHz with and without a contralateral acoustic stimulus (CAS) to elicit medial efferent activation. Aging effects on magnitude and phase of the 2f1-f2 DPOAE and on its components were examined, as was the link between speech-in-noise performance and MOCR strength. Results rev

Predicting the speech reception threshold of cochlear implant listeners using an envelope-correlation based measure.

A modulation-based index is proposed for predicting speech intelligibility by cochlear implant (CI) listeners. The input to the proposed index are speech envelopes extracted using the individual CI user's daily strategy, and as such, this approach incorporates information about the number of active electrodes, shape of the compression function and electrical dynamic range. High correlation (r = 0.96) was achieved with the proposed index when evaluated with speech-reception thresholds (SRTs) obtained by CI users in steady and speech-masker conditions. This outcome suggests that the information

Foveal crowding in posterior cortical atrophy: a specific early-visual-processing deficit affecting word reading.

Visual crowding is a form of masking in which single-letter identification is compromised by the presence of additional letters or other simple visual forms in close proximity. This behavioural phenomenon has been studied most frequently in the context of amblyopic and normal peripheral vision. In the current study, we investigate this phenomenon in the context of two patients with peripheral dyslexia and a third with visual disorientation consequent to bilateral posterior cortical atrophy. In one case, reading showed the effects of word length typical of letter-by-letter reading, whereas the

Validation of the 'Arabic commands in noise test' and evaluation of the impact of conscientiousness on test performance.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to validate the newly developed speech-in-noise (SiN) hearing test, the Arabic commands in noise test (ACINT) and explore the effect of global personality trait conscientiousness on auditory task performance. STUDY DESIGN: The SiN test was performed twice on persons with normal hearing (NH) and hearing-impairment (HI). Using the Arabic NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), individuals with NH were categorized into groups based on their level of conscientiousness. STUDY SAMPLE: 54 normal hearing individuals and 20 individuals with mild sensorineural hearing loss as i

Age-related changes in acoustic cue use for speech-in-speech perception.

Acoustic cues such as pitch and spatial location allow listeners to attend to a target speaker and ignore competing talkers, aiding speech recognition in background noise. Diminished ability to utilize acoustic cues for speech stream segregation may thus contribute to older adults' challenges hearing in noise. Adults aged 18-74 completed a speech-in-speech identification task with three conditions containing 1) only pitch cues (fundamental frequency), 2) only spatial cues (interaural time differences; ITDs), or 3) both pitch and spatial cues for segregating a target talker from competing talke

Is children's listening effort in background noise influenced by the speaker's voice quality?

The present study aims at exploring the influence of voice quality on listening effort in children performing a language comprehension test with sentences of increasing difficulty. Listening effort is explored in relation to gender ( = cisgender). The study has a between-groups design. Ninety-three mainstreamed children aged 8;2 to 9;3 with typical language development participated. The children were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 46/47) with equal allocation of boys and girls and for the analysis to four groups depending of gender and voice condition. Clutter modulates the representation of target objects in the human occipitotemporal cortex.

Target objects required for goal-directed behavior are typically embedded within multiple irrelevant objects that may interfere with their encoding. Most neuroimaging studies of high-level visual cortex have examined the representation of isolated objects, and therefore, little is known about how surrounding objects influence the neural representation of target objects. To investigate the effect of different types of clutter on the distributed responses to target objects in high-level visual areas, we used fMRI and manipulated the type of clutter. Specifically, target objects (i.e., a face and

Auditory processing deficits in individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma.

OBJECTIVE: The high energy demand of the auditory and visual pathways render these sensory systems prone to diseases that impair mitochondrial function. Primary open-angle glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve, has recently been associated with a spectrum of mitochondrial abnormalities. This study sought to investigate auditory processing in individuals with open-angle glaucoma. DESIGN/STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-seven subjects with open-angle glaucoma underwent electrophysiologic (auditory brainstem response), auditory temporal processing (amplitude modulation detection), and spee

Altered dynamic coupling of lateral occipital complex during visual perception in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: There is mounting evidence that visual perception abnormalities in schizophrenia are partly explained by a dysfunction of the lateral occipital complex (LO). We previously demonstrated that schizophrenia patients had broader topography and reduced magnitude of activity of LO. However, the functional connectivity of LO with other brain regions during visual perception has not been directly investigated in schizophrenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients with schizophrenia and eighteen matched controls performed a backward masking task during functional magnetic resonance i

The effect of unilateral amygdala removals on detecting fear from briefly presented backward-masked faces.

Facial expressions convey information about the moods and intentions of other people and provide important clues about environmental threats. Previous research has shown that patients with unilateral amygdala removals have difficulties rating the intensity of fearful facial expressions. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether patients with amygdala lesions would also be impaired at detecting fear from briefly presented, backward-masked faces. We found that patients with either left or right temporal lobe excisions were impaired at rating fear intensity in faces, whereas fear de

Speech perception in noise using directional microphones in open-canal hearing aids.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with impaired hearing find it difficult to understand speech in the presence of background noise--a problem addressed effectively by directional microphones. As open-canal fittings have become increasingly popular in the recent past, so has the debate about the effective directional benefit available from these devices. PURPOSE: This study investigates the benefit of directional microphones in two commercially available open-canal behind-the-ear hearing aids using the Hearing in Noise Test (HINT). STUDY SAMPLE: Sixteen individuals, between 50 and 85 year of age, with

Functional topography of working memory for face or voice identity.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate whether the neural systems for nonspatial visual and auditory working memory exhibits a functional dissociation. The subjects performed a delayed recognition task for previously unfamiliar faces and voices and an audiovisual sensorimotor control task. During the initial sample and subsequent test stimulus presentations, activation was greater for the face than for the voice identity task bilaterally in the occipitotemporal cortex and, conversely, greater for voices than for faces bilaterally in the superior temporal sulcus/gyr

No association between idiopathic hidden hearing loss and behavioral adaptation to noise in humans.

Adaptation to noise refers to the improvement in word-in-noise recognition as words are delayed a few hundred milliseconds in the noise. This adaptation is thought to reflect adjustments of the dynamic range of auditory neurons to the most frequent noise level. Evidence from a mouse model suggests that hidden hearing loss (HHL), a diminished auditory nerve response without a hearing loss, selectively impairs neural dynamic range adaptation to loud sound environments. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether HHL is associated with poor behavioral adaptation to loud noise in speec

Formant frequency discrimination with a fine structure sound coding strategy for cochlear implants.

Recent sound coding strategies for cochlear implants (CI) have focused on the transmission of temporal fine structure to the CI recipient. To date, knowledge about the effects of fine structure coding in electrical hearing is poorly charactarized. The aim of this study was to examine whether the presence of temporal fine structure coding affects how the CI recipient perceives sound. This was done by comparing two sound coding strategies with different temporal fine structure coverage in a longitudinal cross-over setting. The more recent FS4 coding strategy provides fine structure coding on typ
