INTRODUCTION: In humans, prenatal dibutyl phthalate (DBP) exposure is associated with increased risks of adverse fetal outcomes as well as metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in the offspring in a fetal sex-specific manner. However, mechanisms underlying these prenatal DBP exposure-associated adverse fetal/offspring outcomes are unclear. We hypothesize that environmentally relevant low-dose prenatal DBP exposure dysregulates fetal-placental vascular function and lipid metabolism in a fetal sex-specific manner, thereby impairing placental efficiency and programming adverse offspring metabolic

Background Placental insufficiency is a pathological state in which the placenta fails to provide adequate oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, leading to impaired growth, preterm birth, and adverse neonatal outcomes. Despite its clinical relevance, diagnostic approaches remain limited, and there is a need for a quantifiable tool to assess placental health. The objective of this study was to develop a Placental Health Score (PHS) by integrating key morphometric placental parameters into a multiple linear regression model after normalization and to validate the score by assessing its correlation

INTRODUCTION: Information about placental size in ongoing pregnancies may aid the identification of pregnancies with increased risk of adverse outcome. Placental volume can be measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, this method is not universally available in antenatal care. Ultrasound is the diagnostic tool of choice in pregnancy. Therefore, we studied whether simple two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound placental measurements were correlated with placental volume measured by MRI.
METHODS: We examined a convenience sample of 104 ongoing pregnancies at gestational week 27, using b

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: It is well-documented in the literature that the placenta migrates during pregnancy; however, studies regarding placental cord insertion (PCI) migration are scarce. This longitudinal, prospective study aimed to determine whether PCI migration is a true phenomenon, to assess whether the PCI can change classification during pregnancy and to determine the validity of PCI site documentation including follow-up of abnormal PCI.
METHODS: Eighty-three participants who had first, second and third trimester ultrasound examinations at a Western Australian private imaging practice

Human placental lactogen (HPL) is a pregnancy-related hormone produced by the placenta. The overall functions of serum HPL impacts the developing fetus and placenta. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between maternal serum concentration of HPL and sonographic fetal growth parameters in pregnancy induced hypertension as a marker of placental function. This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted over a 9-month period in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Nigeria that involved 100 women with pregnancy induced hypertension. An obstetric ultra

Placental protein 13 (PP13) is a regulatory protein involved in remodeling the vascular system of the pregnancy and extending the immune tolerance of the mother to the growing fetus. PP13 is localized on the surface of the syncytiotrophoblast. An ex vivo placental model shows that the PP13 is released via placental-associated extracellular vesicles (PEVs) to the maternal uterine vein. This exploratory study aimed to determine PEV-associated PP13 in the maternal circulation as compared to the known soluble fraction since each has a specific communication pathway. Patients admitted to Bnai Zion

Reverse diastolic flow of the fetal middle cerebral artery is a rare, yet ominous finding which has been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes including: intracranial hemorrhage, growth restriction, fetal-maternal hemorrhage, severe anemia, hydrops, hepatic anomaly, subsequent stillbirth, and early neonatal death. We report a case in which following notation of a nonreassuring fetal heart rate at 32 weeks' gestation, sonographic documentation of persistent reverse diastolic flow of the fetal middle cerebral artery was noted in association with sonographic findings of vascular placental dy

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate whether placental parameters measured by three-dimensional ultrasound are associated with preeclampsia (PE) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA).
METHODS: In total, 1163 pregnancies at 11-14 weeks of gestation were recruited between October 8, 2020, and April 30, 2021. Placenta volume (PV), placental bed vascularization flow index (PBVFI), and uterine arteries pulse index (UtA-PI) were measured. Placental quotient (PQ = PV/weeks of gestation) was calculated. All participants were re-examined 4 weeks later. The placental volume growth rate (PVGR = placen

OBJECTIVES: During human pregnancy, the endothelial cells of the uterine spiral arteries (SPA) are extensively replaced by a subtype of placental trophoblasts, endovascular extravillous trophoblasts (enEVTs), thus establishing a placental-maternal circulation. On this pathway, foetus-derived placental villi and enEVTs bath into the maternal blood that perfuses along SPA being not attacked by the maternal lymphocytes. We aimed to reveal the underlying mechanism of such immune tolerance.
METHODS: In situ hybridization, immunofluorescence, ELISA and FCM assay were performed to examine TGF-β1 exp

INTRODUCTION: Placental Protein 1 (PP1), PP8, and PP22 were isolated from the placenta. Herein, we aimed to identify PP1, PP8, and PP22 proteins and their placental and trophoblastic expression patterns to reveal potential involvement in pregnancy complications.
METHODS: We analyzed PP1, PP8, and PP22 proteins with LC-MS. We compared the placental behaviors of PP1, PP8, and PP22 to the predominantly placenta-expressed PP5/TFPI-2. Placenta-specificity scores were generated from microarray data. Trophoblasts were isolated from healthy placentas and differentiated; total RNA was isolated and sub

BACKGROUND: Among the severe complications of preeclampsia (PE), acute kidney injury (AKI) is problematic if features of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) are present. Although a haemolysis enzyme liver low-platelets syndrome is considerably more frequent, it is vital to rule out a flare of atypical haemolytic and uraemic syndrome (aHUS). Our objective was to improve differential diagnosis procedures in post-partum AKI.
METHODS: A total of 105 cases of post-partum AKI, admitted to nine different regional French intensive care units from 2011 to 2015, were analysed. Analysis included initial an

EGFL7 is a secreted angiogenic factor produced by embryonic endothelial cells. To understand its role in placental development, we established a novel Egfl7 knockout mouse. The mutant mice have gross defects in chorioallantoic branching morphogenesis and placental vascular patterning. Microangiography and 3D imaging revealed patchy perfusion of Egfl7-/- placentas marked by impeded blood conductance through sites of narrowed vessels. Consistent with poor feto-placental perfusion, Egfl7 knockout resulted in reduced placental weight and fetal growth restriction. The placentas also showed abnormal

Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) such as interferon (IFN)-β and glatiramer acetate are often prescribed to slow disability progression in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, adverse pregnancy outcomes have been reported with these medications. We report the rare occurrence of severe placental complications in a 30-year-old pregnant woman with MS who continued to take IFN-β during her first trimester. She presented at the Tawam Hospital, Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, in 2013 with early-onset fetal growth restriction. At 30 gestational weeks, she developed severe pre-eclampsia. The bab

Placental malaria, especially when complicated with intervillositis, can cause fetal growth restriction. Transplacental glucose transport by glucose transporter isoform 1 (GLUT-1) on the syncytiotrophoblast microvillous and basal plasma membranes regulates fetal growth. We found that GLUT-1 expression in the microvillous plasma membrane of Plasmodium falciparum-negative placenta biopsy specimens was comparable to that in P. falciparum-positive placenta biopsy specimens with or without intervillositis, whereas GLUT-1 expression in the basal plasma membrane was lowest in P. falciparum-positive p
