OBJECTIVE: To increase awareness of black thyroid in dogs and to prevent unnecessary total thyroidectomy. A benign condition called "black thyroid" has been documented in greater than 250 people on chronic minocycline therapy, and rarely in animals. Right atrioventricular valve insufficiency and bilateral congestive heart failure were identified in a carpet python (Morelia spilota variegata) with the aid of colour Doppler echocardiography, electrocardiography and radiography. The snake failed to respond to diuretic therapy and was euthanased. Based on this case, it appears that bilateral congestive failure is feasible in univentricular animals with lesions restricted to one side of the heart. Loop diuretic therapy may be inappropriate in non-crocodilian reptiles because reptiles lack a loop of Henle.

The therapeutic efficacy of a combination of meso 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and calcium disodium EDTA in protecting testicular disorders in chronic lead intoxication was investigated. The results indicate that two five-days courses of the combined therapy produced a more effective recovery in the lead induced biochemical and histopathological disorders compared to conventional single 5 days therapy. No adverse effect of the chelators, when administered individually or in combination, was noticed in the testes of control (without lead exposure) animals.

This case report concerns a 14-year-old female patient, whose insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was displayed by one infrequent complication, the cataract. This is an unusual manifestation in a 14-year-old patient; indeed, there are many findings in experimental animals demonstrating the development of this complication by maintaining blood glucose levels above 12 mM. After surgical therapy, complete vision was recovered, but we think that an earlier diagnosis and therapy of metabolic derangement of diabetes may have avoided this complication.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute ischemia in the territory of the carotid artery can lead to massive cerebral edema with raised intracranial pressure and progression to coma and death due to uncal, cingulate, or tonsillar herniation. Thus far, only anecdotal experience with supratentorial ischemia treated by decompressive craniectomy has been reported; and there are no published experimental data dealing with this kind of therapy in acute supratentorial stroke.
