The PrePex circumcision device causes ischemic necrosis of the foreskin, raising concerns of anaerobic overgrowth. We compared the subpreputial microbiome of 2 men 7 days after PrePex device placement to that of 145 uncircumcised men in Rakai, Uganda, using 16S ribosomal (rRNA) RNA gene-based quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis and sequencing. PrePex users had higher absolute abundance of all bacteria than uncircumcised men (P = .001), largely due to increased numbers of the following anaerobes: Porphyromonas (5.2 × 10(7) 16S rRNA gene copies/swab in the PrePex group and 1.1 × 10(6

Medical male circumcision (MMC) is a central component of HIV prevention. In this study we examined barriers to and facilitators of MMC in Rakai, Uganda. Interviews and focus groups with MMC acceptors, decliners, and community members were collected and analyzed iteratively. Themes were developed based on immersion, repeated reading, sorting, and coding of data using grounded theory. Pain, medical complications, infertility, lack of empirical efficacy, waiting time before resumption of sex, and religion were identified as obstacles to MMC acceptance. Prevention and healing of sexually transmit

The claim that circumcision reduces the risk of sexually transmitted infections has been repeated so frequently that many believe it is true. A systematic review and meta-analyses were performed on studies of genital discharge syndrome versus genital ulcerative disease, genital discharge syndrome, nonspecific urethritis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital ulcerative disease, chancroid, syphilis, herpes simplex virus, human papillomavirus, and contracting a sexually transmitted infection of any type. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and human papillomavirus are not significantly impacted by cir

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision (MC) decreases the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition in men. We explored associations between MC of the primary sex partner and women's risk of acquisition of chlamydial (Ct), gonococcal (GC), or trichomonal (Tv) infections.
METHODS: We analyzed data from a prospective study on hormonal contraception and incident human immunodeficiency virus/sexually transmitted infection (STI) among women from Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Thailand. At enrollment and each follow-up visit, we collected endocervical swabs for polymerase chain reaction identification o

BACKGROUND: It is uncertain whether male circumcision reduces the risks of penile human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the man and of cervical cancer in his female partner.
METHODS: We pooled data on 1913 couples enrolled in one of seven case-control studies of cervical carcinoma in situ and cervical cancer in five countries. Circumcision status was self-reported, and the accuracy of the data was confirmed by physical examination at three study sites. The presence or absence of penile HPV DNA was assessed by a polymerase-chain-reaction assay in 1520 men and yielded a valid result in the ca

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision (MC) has been shown to reduce the risk of male genital diseases. MC is not commonly practiced among Chinese males and little is known about the factors associated with their knowledge of and willingness for MC. This study was to explore the knowledge regarding the foreskin among Chinese males and to identify factors associated with their willingness to undergo circumcision.
METHODS: A total of 237 patients with redundant prepuce/phimosis were interviewed through face-to-face interviews. The items on the questionnaire included: demographics, an objective scale ass

This paper reviews some uniquely male sexual health concerns in Southeast Asia, with particular attention to Indonesia. These include various forms of male circumcision, different types of 'penis enhancement' carried out across the region and the use of dry sex by women. These practices appear to be motivated by specific notions of sexual pleasure, based on indigenous gender constructs. Although they may or may not pose a serious public health problem, as markers of misguided or exploitative gender relations they do reveal important aspects of social psychology related to sexuality and sexual

BACKGROUND: Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) is one of the strategies being promoted to prevent sexual heterosexual transmission of HIV. It has been adopted by 14 countries with high HIV prevalence and low circumcision rates. The 60.0% protective efficacy of VMMC has come with misconceptions in some societies in Malawi, hence VMMC clients may opt for risky sexual practices owing to its perceived protective effect. The study estimated proportion of circumcised men engaging in risky sexual behaviors post-VMMC, assessed knowledge on VMMC protective effect and identified socio-demographi

INTRODUCTION: Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis. Balanoposthitis involves both the glans penis and prepuce and occurs only in uncircumcised males. Recurrent balanoposthitis represents a strong indication for circumcision. After Candida infections, aerobic bacteria are the second most common aetiological cause of acute infectious balanoposthitis, mainly streptococci groups B and D, and staphylococci, usually S. aureus . Their clinical manifestations are variable inflammatory changes, including diffuse erythema and oedema. Severe balanopreputial oedema with purulent exudate occurs

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) reduces the risk of HIV acquisition by 60% among heterosexual men, provides protection against certain sexually transmitted infections (STI), and leads to penile microbiome composition changes associated with reduced risk of HIV infection. Intuitively, the benefits of VMMC for female sex partners in relation to STI are likely and have been evaluated. The purpose of this review is to examine emerging findings of broader sexual and reproductive health (SRH) benefits of VMMC for female sex partners.
RECENT FINDINGS: Systematic reviews

BACKGROUND: Fournier's gangrene is necrotizing fasciitis of the genitalia, perineal and perianal region associated with a significant mortality rate. The potentially fatal disease is caused both by aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and primarily occurs in men. The majority of Fournier's gangrene cases is idiopathic or derived from perineal and genital skin infections. Early surgical debridement of necrotic tissues and antibiotics are fundamental.
CASE: We report a rare case of Fourniers gangrene of a 57-year-old man secondary to circumcision. The patient presented due to painful swelling

This meta-analysis was performed to assess sexual functions following adult male circumcision. We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PUBMED, EMBASE, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Review and Web of Science from their inception until January 2013 to identify all eligible studies that reported on men's sexual function after circumcision. The Cochrane Collaboration's RevMan 5.2 software was employed for data analysis, and the fixed or the random effect model was selected depending on the proportion of heterogeneity. We identified 10 studies, which described a total

Introduction. Circumcision is a common procedure carried out around the world. Due to religious reasons, it is routinely done in Bangladesh, by both traditional as well as medically trained circumcisers. Complications include excessive bleeding, loss of foreskin, infection, and injury to the glans penis. Myiasis complicating male circumcision appears to be very rare. Case Presentation. In 2010, a 10-year-old boy presented to the OPD of Dhaka Medical College Hospital with severe pain in his penile region following circumcision 7-days after. The procedure was carried out by a traditional circumc

The results of recent controlled trials documenting the protective effect of male circumcision on HIV infection in young adults pose significant challenges to a country like Israel. Circumcision is performed in close to 100% of new born males, mostly as a religious act in Judaism and Islam. Christian Israelis follow societal norms suggesting that circumcision contributes to better hygiene and cleanliness. Complications in infant circumcision in Israel are rare, despite the surgery being preformed most often by nonmedical circumcisers (a "Mohel") on the eighth day of birth. Reported complicatio

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Male genital dermatoses are a common and underappreciated cause of morbidity. Its prevalence and the characteristics of patients presenting with these conditions are poorly understood. The aim of the study was to ascertain which dermatoses were referred to the Male Genital Dermatology Clinic in Melbourne, Australia and to determine whether circumcision and atopy are associated with male genital skin disease.
METHOD: This was a retrospective review of 331 new patients who attended the clinic from 2004 to 2012. Descriptive statistics were obtained to determine the frequen

HIV/AIDS prevalence is still high in Botswana. The main aim of this study was to assess and compare sexual risk behaviours of circumcised and uncircumcised men before and after the launch of the safe male circumcision programme. Data used for analyses were derived from the 2008 and 2013 Botswana AIDS Impact Surveys. Modified Poisson regression analysis was used to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) as measures of association between circumcision status and multiple sexual partners, transactional sex, inconsistent condom use and intergenerational sex. The proportion of circumcised men increased two

BACKGROUND: Lichen Sclerosus et Atrophicus (LSA) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis of multifactorial aetiology, mainly affecting the genital area in both sexes and at any age. First-line therapy involves topical corticosteroids, whilst surgery, particularly circumcision in males, is reserved for non-responders or phimosis cases. Some patients show persistent disease post-surgery. The study aims to compare the effectiveness of circumcision versus topical corticosteroids in improving QoL in men with LSA, assess postoperative recurrence risk.
METHODS: A retrospective study of consecutive male
