AIMS: Despite their low individual metastatic potential, thin melanomas (≤1 mm Breslow thickness) contribute significantly to melanoma mortality overall. Therefore, identification of prognostic biomarkers is particularly important in this subgroup of melanoma. BACKGROUND: The pterygium is a growth onto the cornea of fibrovascular tissue that is continuous with the conjunctiva, whereas the mechanisms of cell proliferation in pterygium epithelium are unknown.
AIM: To analyse the histopathology and the expression of cell cycle-related molecules in pterygium tissues.

An assessment in Nordic immunohistochemical Quality Control (NordiQC) revealed that only 23% participant laboratories performed optimal staining for detection of cyclin D1 (CyD1) in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). False-negative results were secondary to suboptimal protocols. Immunostaining for cyclin D1 has become essential for the reliable diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). MCL is associated with a poor prognosis and its distinction from other small B-cell lymphomas is clinically important. Invasive lobular carcinoma comprises approximately 10% of human mammary cancers, yet little is known about the molecular basis of this carcinoma. Because cyclin D1 plays a role in the pathogenesis of breast carcinomas of the ductal type, we hypothesized that this confirmed oncogene might also participate in the development of lobular carcinomas. We sought to determine the frequency of cyclin D1 protein overexpression in invasive lobular carcinoma, to investigate the cause of the protein accumulation, and to identify the effects of high levels of the protein on the regulation of the cell cycle.
