Impulse control and related disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Neuropsychiatric disorders are common among patients with Parkinson's disease and may appear in any stage of the disease. However, these disorders often go undiagnosed and receive insufficient treatment. Observations in recent years have revealed that dopamine replacement therapy may lead to the development or worsening of conditions, such as gambling disorder, compulsive sexual behavior, compulsive buying and binge eating, in addition to punding and dopamine dysregulation syndrome. The pathophysiology of these disorders seems to be related to abnormal dopaminergic stimulation of the basal reg

Dyskinesias and impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: From pathogenesis to potential therapeutic approaches.

Dopaminergic treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD) reduces the severity of motor symptoms of the disease. However, its chronic use is associated with disabling motor and behavioral side effects, among which levodopa-induced dyskinesias (LID) and impulse control disorders (ICD) are the most common. The underlying mechanisms and pathological substrate of these dopaminergic complications are not fully understood. Recently, the refinement of imaging techniques and the study of the genetics and molecular bases of LID and ICD indicate that, although different, they could share some features. In addi

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: prevalence and possible risk factors.

There is an increasing awareness that impulse control disorders (ICDs), including compulsive gambling, buying, sexual behavior and eating, can occur as a complication of Parkinson's disease (PD). In addition, other impulsive or compulsive disorders including dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) and punding are reported. Case reporting and prospective studies documented an association between ICDs and the use of dopamine agonists (DAs), and to a lesser extent levodopa use, while DDS occurs with higher dosages of levodopa or short-acting DAs. Data suggest that risk factors for an ICD may includ

Gambling among the Chinese: a comprehensive review.

Despite being a significant issue, there has been a lack of systematic reviews on gambling and problem gambling (PG) among the Chinese. Thus, this paper attempts to fill this theoretical gap. A literature search of social sciences databases (from 1840 to now) yielded 25 articles with a total sample of 12,848 Chinese community participants and 3397 clinical participants. The major findings were: (1) Social gambling is widespread among Chinese communities as it is a preferred form of entertainment. (2) Prevalence estimates for PG have increased over the years and currently ranged from 2.5% to 4.

Is dopamine agonist therapy associated with developing pathological gambling in Parkinson's disease patients?

In recent years, improving the quality of life and the level of functioning in Parkinson's disease patients has become the main challenge of all therapeutic protocols for this chronic disease. Hence, identifying comorbid psychiatric conditions is the ambition of many studies in the field. To date, a few research studies have investigated the development of problem gambling as a potential side effect of dopamine agonist medications. However, there are still controversies among experts in the field. Thus far, published reports have been able to neither demonstrate the extent of risk for gambling

Legalized gambling and crime in Canada.

In the 10 provinces and 2 territories of Canada in 2000, but not in 1990, the total number of types of gambling activities was positively associated with rates of robbery (p<.05). Controls for other social variables did not eliminate these associations. With so many correlations in the present study the likelihood of a Type I error was quite large. Alpha was adjusted to control that likelihood. Statistical analysis now required even stronger evidence before concluding that there were significant relationships between crime and gambling variables or among gambling variables. In the 10 provinces

[Comorbidity in obsessive-compulsive disorder].

It has been identified for a long time that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) coexists with other psychiatric disorders: in over 50 percent of the OCD, patients meet the criteria for at least one axis I disorder (depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, impulse control disorders). Depressive disorders are the most commonly co-occurring difficulties and associated with significantly higher level of impairment and distress. Eating disorders and impulse control disorders are common comorbidity in OCD. These disorders as eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, patho

[Clinical masks of bipolar disorders].

Bipolar disorders usually present as alternating episodes of melancholy and mania. However, other clinical situations appear in a masked form before being spotted. The principal one is hypomania that declares itself as an attenuated form of a manic episode. Its principal signs are an increase in energy, hyperactivity and disinhibition. In other cases, bipolar disorders express themselves as impulsive behaviours. More rarely, the mask of a bipolar illness is translated into behaviours such as intermittent alcohol abuse. The consummation of alcohol is sudden and paroxysmal. It is a type of dipso

Frequency of Impulsive-Compulsive Behavior and Associated Psychological Factors in Parkinson's Disease: Lack of Control or Too Much of It?

Background and Objectives: Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) including pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive eating, compulsive buying, and other related behaviors are well-known distinct non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Some large-scale studies present a prevalence of at least 10%, however, there are other reports providing much higher rates. The majority of the conducted studies investigating ICDs focus mainly on pharmacological factors, however, from a psychological perspective, there is yet enough room for investigation. In order to address the above issues, we de

Spectrum of impulse control behaviours in Parkinson's disease: pathophysiology and management.

Impulse control behaviours (ICBs) are a range of behaviours linked by their reward-based, repetitive natures. They can be precipitated in Parkinson's disease (PD) by dopamine replacement therapy, often with detrimental consequences for patients and caregivers. While now a well-recognised non-motor feature of treated PD, much remains unknown about the influence of risk factors, pathophysiological mechanisms, vulnerability factors for specific types of behaviour and the optimal management strategies. Imaging studies have identified structural and functional changes in striatal and prefrontal bra

Functional and dysfunctional impulsivities changes after subthalamic nucleus-deep brain stimulation in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated changes of impulsivity after deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, distinguishing functional from dysfunctional impulsivity and their contributing factors. METHODS: Data of 33 PD patients treated by STN-DBS were studied before and 6 months after surgery: motor impairment, medication (dose and dopaminergic agonists), cognition, mood and occurrence of impulse control disorders. Impulsivity was assessed by the Dickman Impulsivity Inventory, which distinguishes functional impulsivity (FI), reflecting the pot

Developments in impulse control behaviours of Parkinson's disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Impulse control behaviours (ICBs) are a frequent comorbidity for patients with Parkinson's disease. They consist of impulse control disorders, dopamine dysregulation syndrome, and punding. The field continues to evolve in the understanding of impulsivity and assessment of risk factors in the development of these behaviours and their appropriate management in patients with Parkinson's disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Impulsivity is a multifaceted concept that is surprisingly common in untreated patients with Parkinson's disease. The incidence of ICBs increases with demographic, cli
