The purpose of this study was to determine whether the MR findings of idiopathic pituitary dwarfism correlated with a clinical history of perinatal abnormalities and abnormal levels of pituitary hormones. MR examinations of 18 patients with pituitary dwarfism were performed; these patients were divided into two groups: those with ectopic posterior lobes (group 1) and those with normal posterior lobes (group 2). Among the seven patients in group 1, MR showed hyperintense signal at the median eminence of the hypothalamus, which was regarded as the ectopic posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. T…

Two infants with clinical and radiologic features of metatropic dwarfism presented in the neonatal period with episodes of cyanosis. Diagnostic studies to determine the etiology of these spells, including electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram, arterial blood gases, and metabolic and sepsis studies, were unremarkable. Chest roentgenograms revealed the characteristic long, narrow thoracic cage with no evidence of parenchymal disease. Cervical spine stability evaluation, pulmonary function studies, and chest impedance monitoring with qualitative air flow thermistor studies and transcutaneous ox…

A father and son, both affected by a skeletal dysplasia with severe craniofacial deformities, are reported and compared to three previously described isolated cases of the same dwarfism. The principal features are craniosynostosis, multiple lucent metaphyseal defects, flattening and anterior beaking of the vertebral bodies, and abnormal dentition. Autosomal dominant inheritance is suggested.

Acromesomelic dwarfism is a distinct condition characterized by short stature of the short limb type, with the hands and feet showing the most obvious deviations from normal. The forearm bones are usually disproportionately shorter than the other long tubular bones of the limbs. The intelligence is normal. Available data suggest autosomal recessive transmission. Characteristic clinical and radiographic features permit establishment of a confident diagnosis in the first year of life.

Two test matings in the irish setter were performed, and genetic, clinical, morphometric, radiographic, bone histological and plasma and urine biochemical features of dwarfism were studied. All offspring were phenotypically normal at birth and weaning, but at the age of 2.5 to 4 months the longitudinal growth of the spine and leg bones was retarded in the dwarfs compared with the normal littermates. Most dwarfs performed well, even in the field. Radiographic and histological evaluations revealed a hypochondroplasia. A morphometric diagnostic method for Irish setter dwarfism was developed. A si…

We describe a lethal variety of congenital short-limbed dwarfism (Thanatophoric dwarfism) characterized by marked shortening of the extremities, macrocephaly with associated hydrocephalus and a narrow thorax, delivered by a 25-year-old woman in our hospital. Experience with this form of abnormality is rare and even an isolated case report will heighten awareness and assist with further management and counselling of parents.
