We developed a chondroitin sulfate-polyethylene glycol (CS-PEG) adhesive hydrogel with numerous potential biomedical applications. The carboxyl groups on chondroitin sulfate (CS) chains were functionalized with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to yield chondroitin sulfate succinimidyl succinate (CS-NHS). Following purification, the CS-NHS molecule can react with primary amines to form amide bonds. Hence, using six arm polyethylene glycol amine PEG-(NH2)6 as a crosslinker we formed a hydrogel which was covalently bound to proteins in tissue via amide bonds. By varying the initial pH of the precursor

Tissue adhesives are gaining popularity in ophthalmology, as they could potentially reduce the complications associated with current surgical methods. An ideal tissue adhesive should have superior tensile strength, be non-toxic and anti-inflammatory, improve efficiency and be cost-effective. Both synthetic and biological glues are available. The primary synthetic glues include cyanoacrylate and the recently introduced polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivatives, while most biological glues are composed of fibrin. Cyanoacrylate has a high tensile strength, but rapidly polymerises upon contact with an

The essential treatment of a ranula is meticulous dissection of the thin wall of the cyst in continuity with the sublingual gland of origin. We have used a technique of fibrin glue injection into the cystic space of the ranula after it had been evacuated by aspiration. The fibrin glue within the cystic cavity prevents collapse of the wall of the cyst during surgery and facilitates and simplifies the surgical procedure by clearly outlining the involved area and by sharply delineating its thin wall.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of fibrin sealant on mRNA expression of factors regulating plasminogen activator activity in human peritoneal cells. Plasminogen activator activity is thought to play a pivotal role in degradation of the proteinaceous mass that develops after surgical procedures. Reduction of plasminogen activator activity, as occurs with tissue trauma, results in increased postoperative adhesion development.
DESIGN: Tissue culture for 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours.
SETTING: University research laboratory.
PATIENTS: Source of mesothelial cells with fibroblasts.

Using 10 female pigs, an open ureteral resection and suture anastomosis (5 pigs) was compared to a laparoscopic resection and a fibrin glue anastomosis (5 pigs). The fibrin glue technique was performed by laparoscopically excising a ureteral segment, placing 2 transmural sutures over a stent and sealing the anastomosis with tissue adhesive, a mixture of concentrated fibrinogen and thrombin. At 4 weeks the stent was removed. At 8 weeks, the animals underwent antegrade pyelograms and Whittaker renal pelvis perfusion test and then were sacrificed. The experimental group had 1 anastomotic breakdow

Current treatment methods to repair meniscal tears do not bring fully satisfactory results. Tissue adhesives are considered promising alternatives, since they are easy to apply and cause minimal tissue trauma. The first aim of this study was to analyze the adhesive properties of and tissue response to two recently developed biodegradable block copolymeric three-armed- and hyper-branched tissue adhesives. The second aim was to investigate if tissue surface modification with collagenase improves the attachment of the adhesives and increases the healing potential of the tissue. Cylindrical explan

Fistulae-in-ano remains a significant surgical problem due to the limitations pertinent to accurate assessment and the magnitude, shortcomings and side effects of the various procedures currently employed for their management. Six consecutive fistulae-in-ano patients (males, age range 30 to 58 years) were successfully treated by KTP laser (20-watt continuous aim for 20 to 30 seconds delivering a total energy of 400 to 600 joules) with rapid solidification fibrin glue then followed up for 3 months without recurrence. This approach offers a simple, expeditious and effective treatment for fistula

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presumed efficacy of fibrin sealant in limiting bleeding and biliary leakage from liver residual surface after total pericystectomy for hydatid disease. Forty-five patients (group A) who underwent total pericystectomy in our Institution from 1986 to 1995 and liver residual surface treated with conventional techniques and fibrin sealant for control of haemorrhage and bile leakage were selected. A control group (B) was carefully selected, matching the main characteristics of patients in group A: it consisted of 44 patients, who underwent total pericystec

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal disease is a common chronic disorder mainly seen in the sacrococcygeal region, especially in young males. Different surgical methods have been described for the treatment. Limberg flap has low morbidity and recurrence rates. Fibrin sealant, a two-component tissue adhesive composed of fibrinogen and thrombin, has been used in a number of surgical procedures to achieve hemostasis and to seal tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of fibrin sealant on the Limberg flap procedure.
METHODS: Between January 2003 and January 2004, 32 male patients with

Aortic anastomotic leak is a potentially fatal complication that can occur after treatment of aortic dissection or aneurysm. Several surgical adhesives have been used to prevent this complication, but all have problems with regard to tissue adhesion or biocompatibility. In the present study, we developed a surgical adhesive composed of boric acid-protected catechol groups-modified Alaska pollock-derived gelatin (Cat-ApGltn) and a poly(ethylene glycol)-based crosslinker (4S-PEG). By avoiding oxidation of catechol groups using boric acid, resulting Cat-ApGltn adhesive formed a strong hydrogel by

INTRODUCTION: Breast surgery is often complicated by postoperative seroma, with incidence rates varying from 3% to 85% and no evidence-based prevention methods available. Fibrin glue plays an important role in promoting wound healing and reducing seroma formation. It reduces disruption of small blood and lymphatic vessels, thereby reducing seroma output and promoting effective hemostasis. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of fibrin sealant in reducing the incidence of seroma in patients undergoing surgery for breast cancer.
METHODS: A research protocol was developed for this systematic rev

Enhancing axon regeneration is a major focus of nerve injury research, and the quality of the surgical nerve repair plays a large role in the aggregate success of nerve regeneration. Additionally, exercise is known to promote successful axon regeneration after surgical nerve repair. In this study, we asked how exercise-induced nerve regeneration is affected when a transected nerve is repaired with or without fibrin glue. Fibrin glue repaired nerves exhibited greater vasculature within the tissue bridge compared to nerves that were intrinsically repaired. Fibrin glue repaired nerves also exhibi
