BACKGROUND: Flexible ureteroscopy (FURS) and holmium laser lithotripsy is considered one of the most minimally invasive and safe surgical methods for the treatment of renal calculi. Renal pseudoaneurysm is a rare complication after FURS holmium laser lithotripsy. We report a case of renal pseudoaneurysm after FURS and holmium laser lithotripsy and review the relevant literature to analyze the possible etiology and summarize the treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old male with a 2-year history of diabetes was admitted to the hospital because of right back pain for 5 days. A doppler ultras

Liver transplant is a risk factor for the development of cholangiolithiasis and choledocholithiasis. While usually addressed by endoscopic techniques, percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy combined with laser lithotripsy can be considered a suitable alternative option in select patients. A 29-year-old male with a 27-year history of liver transplant presented with new onset of persistent pain localized to the lower abdomen 9 days after a liver biopsy. Abdominal CT scan and MRCP showed large calculi expanding intra- and extrahepatic bile ducts. All intrahepatic ductal calculi were removed aft

The objective of this study was to investigate risk factors for the development of systemic inflammatory response syndrome following ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy. We retrospectively collected data of 469 patients who underwent ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy at our single institution from February 2008 to June 2016. Details for the patient, the stone, and the surgical factors that potentially contributed to postoperative infection were extracted. Using a logistic regression model, we analyzed how the clinical factors affected the incidence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Twenty-

We conducted a prospective, randomized study to evaluate whether postoperative ureteral stenting is necessary after ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy. A total of 115 consecutive patients with distal or middle ureteral calculi amenable to ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy were prospectively randomized into stented group (n = 58) and nonstented group (n = 57). The stent was routinely placed in the treated ureter for 2 weeks. The outcomes were measured with postoperative patient symptoms, stone-free rates, early and late postoperative complications, and cost-effectiveness. The postope

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Advances in ureteroscope design and refinements of ancillary instrumentation have resulted in an expanded role for ureteroscopy in the management of urinary calculi. Technological enhancements coupled with improved endourologic skills have also been associated with a reduction in procedural-related complications. Historically, postoperative imaging with ultrasound (U/S) or intravenous pyelogram (IVP) had been advocated to rule out persistent obstruction due to retained stone fragments or ureteral stricture. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the incidence of po

To assess the accuracy of Kidney Stone Calculator(KSC), a software designed for surgical planning, in predicting the duration of lithotripsy during flexible ureteroscopy(FURS) when using the novel pulsed-Thulium: YAG(p-Tm: YAG) laser. From February to August 2023, a single-center prospective study was conducted, including patients with kidney or ureteral stones through non-contrast computed tomography(NCCT), who underwent FURS with p-Tm: YAG laser lithotripsy. KSC used three-dimensional segmentation of the stones from NCCT images, along with an interactive user interface for laser settings, to

INTRODUCTION: During ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy (URSL), unsafe elevations in ureteral temperature are thought to contribute to ureteral stricture formation. Cellular damage begins at 43°C, and proteins denature instantly at 60°C. Air bubbles may inadvertently migrate into the collecting system during URSL. The purpose of this study was to evaluate ureteral temperatures during simulated URSL in an air bubble with a holmium (Ho:YAG) and thulium fiber laser (TFL).
METHODS: BegoStone phantoms were positioned distal to the ureteropelvic junction in a model kidney and ureter submerged in a 35°

INTRODUCTION: Hepatolithiasis is the presence of gallstones in the bile ducts above the hepatic ducts' confluence. This condition can cause serious issues like cholangitis and biliary cirrhosis in cases involving post-hepaticojejunostomy. Treatment options for hepatolithiasis include percutaneous transhepatic, endoscopic, and surgical approaches, with laser lithotripsy being effective for difficult stones, and helping to avoid more invasive surgeries like hepatectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We hereby report a case of a 59-year-old woman with a history of multiple surgeries for hepaticojejunostomy

BACKGROUND: Laser lithotripsy (LL) is a common modality for treatment of children and adolescents with nephrolithiasis. Recent introduction of higher-powered lasers may result in more efficacious "dusting" of urinary calculi. However, in vivo animal studies and computational simulations have demonstrated rapid and sustained rise of fluid temperatures with LL, possibly resulting in irreversible tissue damage. How fluid and tissue heating during LL vary with pediatric urinary tract development, however, is unknown. We hypothesize that kidneys of younger children will be more susceptible to chang

Introduction: Temperatures over 43°C-the threshold for cellular injury-may be achieved during ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy. The time to reach and subsequently clear high temperatures at variable laser power settings and irrigation pressures has not been studied. Methods: A flexible or semirigid ureteroscope was placed within an 11/13 F ureteral access sheath inserted into a 250-mL saline bag simulating a normal-caliber ureter, renal pelvis reservoir, and antegrade irrigation flow. A thermocouple was placed adjacent to a 365 μm fiber fired for 45 seconds at 0.6 J/6 Hz, 0.8 J/8 Hz, 1

Background: Supernumerary kidney is a rare anomaly. Not >100 cases have been reported. It was defined by Geisinger as the "free accessory organ," which is a distinct, encapsulated, large, or small parenchymatous mass topographically related to the usual kidney by a loose cellular attachment at most and often by no attachment at times. Case Presentation: A 28-year-old woman presented with left lower abdomen pain. On evaluation, she was found to have left supernumerary kidney with renal pelvic stone 13 × 8 mm, which was placed below the native kidney. The ureter was merging with native kidney ur

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Stone formers often have a chronic exposure to significant quantities of ionising radiation from radiological investigations and interventions. Predicting radiation exposure would allow the clinician to quantify expected cumulative radiation and find strategies to minimise exposure. We evaluated radiation exposure during ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy (URS + LL) for a single stone episode and correlated the results to stone characteristics.
METHOD: Data was collected retrospectively for all patients undergoing URS + LL in our institution over a 1 year period.
