[Parasternal lymphoscintigraphy in planning the radiation therapy of breast cancer].

Altogether 82 breast cancer patients were investigated to determine a possibility of the use of parasternal lymphoscintigraphy with colloid finely divided radiopharmaceuticals 99mTc and 198Au to form individual irradiation fields; 43 patients with fibroadenomatosis were taken as controls. Variants of the localization of parasternal lymph nodes were defined, standard and "optimum" (individual) parasternal irradiation field values were compared. 54.9% of the patients were shown to be in need of correction by increasing a standard irradiation field (5 cm wide).

Axillary lymphoscintigraphy by radioimmunodetection of carcinoembryonic antigen in breast cancer.

In seven women with carcinoma of the breast I-131-labeled antibodies to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were administered subcutaneously in the finger webs. Subsequent scintigraphic immages demonstrated localization of radioactivity in the ipsilateral axillary metastases of all patients and in the contralateral axillae of three. Fifteen patients with either gastrointestinal or genitourinary cancers were studied as controls; in 12 both the hands and feet were injected with antibodies to CEA and in the other three either the hands or feet. Radioactivity was observed in the inquinal nodes of four

Assessment of lymphedema with lymphoscintigraphy: Can nodal quantification help?

Lymphoscintigraphy with combined qualitative and quantitative analysis is reported to be a more sensitive approach to diagnose lymphedema in comparison with the conventional clinical analysis. Our study seeks to evaluate the diagnostic performance of lower limb lymphoscintigraphy with amalgamation of qualitative and quantitative analysis by measuring the ilio-inguinal nodal uptake. This prospective observational study was comprised of 86 patients (172 limbs) diagnosed with lower limb lymphedema. After a thorough clinical grading of edema, radionuclide lymphoscintigraphy was performed as per a

Lymphatic abnormalities demonstrated by lymphoscintigraphy after lower limb cellulitis.

BACKGROUND: Cellulitis is a common cause for admission to hospital, and repeated episodes are thought to damage the lymphatic system. Lymphoedema is recognized as a condition predisposing to cellulitis but there are no data to suggest its prevalence among a population presenting to hospital with acute cellulitis. OBJECTIVES: To ascertain whether lymphatic abnormalities represent a common problem in patients with lower limb cellulitis. METHODS: Patients admitted with cellulitis of the lower limb were invited to undergo clinical examination and lymphoscintigraphy. RESULTS: Thirty patients agr

Sentinel lymph node detection by lymphoscintigraphy in malignant melanoma.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection is currently employed in patients with malignant melanoma (MM) to spare them unnecessary lymph node dissection. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We investigated 241 patients (130 men and 111 women, median age, 50 years (range, 14-92) with MM (192 before and 51 after surgical biopsy); two of them had more than one melanoma lesion. In each patient approx. 10 MBq of 99mTc Nanocoll in 0.1 mL (Nycomed Amersham Sorin; particle size range, 3-80 nm) was injected intradermally around the MM lesion or surgical scar. Dynamic acquisition was performed for

Lymphoscintigraphy using technetium-99m human serum albumin in chylothorax.

Chylous effusion is an infrequent complication of abdominothoracic surgery. When conservative therapy cannot cure the patient, surgical closure of the thoracic duct must be performed. If radiological lymphography is impossible to perform, lymphoscintigraphy with Tc-99m human serum albumin is a good alternative. Here, we present two patients who developed chylothorax after abdominothoracic surgery. Successful surgery was performed after lymphoscintigraphy had demonstrated the disruption of the thoracic duct.

Factors affecting sentinel node localization during preoperative breast lymphoscintigraphy.

UNLABELLED: Variable success rates for identifying axillary (AX) sentinel nodes in breast cancer patients using preoperative lymphoscintigraphy have been reported. We evaluated the effects of age, weight, breast size, method of biopsy, interval after biopsy, and imaging view on the success of sentinel node identification and on the kinetics of radiopharmaceutical migration. METHODS: Preoperative breast lymphoscintigraphy was performed in consecutive breast cancer patients from February 1998 to December 1998. The ipsilateral shoulder was elevated on a foam wedge and the arm was abducted and el

Technical aspects of sentinel node lymphoscintigraphy for breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: A significant morbidity risk is associated with axillary nodal dissections for breast cancer. Many treatment decisions are based on axillary nodal status. Lymphatic mapping and sentinel node biopsy have been investigated to determine if the histology of the sentinel node reflects the remaining lymph node basin. We describe the technical aspects of sentinel node lymphoscintigraphy for breast cancer. METHODS: Ninety-three patients had lymphoscintigraphy for breast cancer. Patients with palpable lesions had 4 concentric injections around the site and lesions requiring localization had

Detection of canine allograft lung rejection by pulmonary lymphoscintigraphy.

We previously demonstrated that lymphoscintigraphy could be used to study pulmonary lymphatic flow. Radiocolloids, high-molecular-weight proteins tagged with radioactive markers, are injected percutaneously in the periphery of the lung. These molecules enter the lymph, are transported via lymphatic channels, and concentrate in the tributary hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes, where they can be visualized by nuclear scan. The goal of this study was to determine whether pulmonary lymphoscintigraphy could be used to detect allograft rejection after lung transplantation. Thirteen mongrel dogs under

Immediate dynamic lymphoscintigraphy delivers no additional value to lymphoscintigraphy 3 hr after tracer injection in sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Immediate dynamic imaging enables accurate definition of sentinel lymph nodes, whereas imaging 3 hr after tracer injection may lead to overestimation of the number of sentinel lymph nodes. A study was performed to define the value of lymphoscintigraphy immediately versus 3 hr after tracer injection in sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer management. METHODS: In 165 sentinel lymph node biopsy procedures preoperative immediate and 3 hr post-injection lymphoscintigraphy was performed after intraparenchymal tracer administration. RESULTS: Lymph node visualization occurred in 6

Modified Lymphoscintigraphy in Primary Lymphatic Insufficiency of the Lower Limb.

Primary lymphedema of the foot and toes could be sometimes misdiagnosed by lymphoscintigraphy as a whole lower limb lymphatic insufficiency (LLLI). This is caused by using standard lymphoscintigraphic protocol based on one interstitial injection of radiotracer applied into the first interdigital space followed by image analysis of lower limb lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes. Here, we show that a modification of the lymphoscintigraphic protocol and introduction of a second dose of radiotracer right above the inner ankle to the clinically healthy tissue can more accurately describe morphologica

Potential Utilization of Lymphoscintigraphy in Patients With Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare disease that was characterized by vascular malformation. Lymphatic malformation was also commonly associated with KTS. However, the application of lymphoscintigraphy in the management of patients with KTS was rarely described. The purpose of this study is to assess whether the findings of lymphoscintigraphy can aid the management of the patients with KTS. METHODS: A total of 28 patients with known KTS who underwent Tc-dextran lymphoscintigraphy with lower extremity tracer injection were included in this retrospective analysis. The images fro

Lymphatic drainage patterns of the human eyelid: assessed by lymphoscintigraphy.

PURPOSE: To describe the lymphatic drainage patterns of the human eyelids. METHODS: Twenty-eight consenting patients who underwent unilateral eyelid surgery at McMaster University between March 2001 and July 2003 had their contralateral eyelids injected with 0.2 ml (0.250 mCi) of Tc 99 m sulphur colloid. The patients were divided into 1 of 5 injection sites of the eyelid, namely upper lateral, upper medial, medial canthus, lower medial, and lower lateral. Lymphoscintigraphy was performed between 2 and 6 hours later with a conventional planar gamma camera. Nodes in the head and neck were ident

Optimized lymphoscintigraphy and diagnostics of lymphatic oedema of the lower extremities.

BACKGROUND: The elementary diagnostic method for the detection of lymph circulation abnormalities in extremities is lymphoscintigraphy. This method provides information on the morphology and function of the lymphatic system. However, there are no generally acceptable standards for lymphoscintigraphy, which makes judgment of its clinical usefulness very difficult. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this work, a discussion is presented on the usefulness of static qualitative scintigraphy of the lymphatic system of lower extremities as well as of its quantitative interpretation, depending upon: (1) time m

The predictive value of lymphoscintigraphy for nodal metastases of cutaneous melanoma.

Lymphoscintigraphy is used to identify ambiguous drainage patterns in cutaneous melanoma of the head, neck and trunk. This study evaluated the efficacy and reliability of lymphoscintigraphy to identify the drainage nodes in 51 patients undergoing both elective and therapeutic lymphadenectomy over a seven-year period. All 13 patients who had lymph node metastases during this follow-up period had the metastatic disease in the very lymph node basins identified by lymphoscintigraphy. Most significantly, none of the 51 patients had metastatic disease in lymphatic basins that were not previously ide

The relevance of internal mammary lymphoscintigraphy in the management of breast carcinoma.

The incidence, implications, and significance of an abnormal internal mammary lymphoscintigram (IML) in 981 breast carcinoma patients without histologic or clinical evidence of axillary metastases is reported. A 13%-16% incidence of parasternal abnormality in patients with early, operable disease correlates well with clinical data. The statistically significant increase, with P consistently less than or equal to 0.005, in incidence of local or distant relapse associated with an abnormal IML when compared to the normal IML emphasizes the value of the procedure as a marker. These results indicat

Axillary lymphoscintigraphy: current status in the treatment of breast cancer.

Postoperative axillary lymphoscintigraphy has been performed after time-differentiated intercostal and interdigital injections of a 99Tc-labeled sulfur microcolloid in 313 patients suffering from breast cancer who underwent radical surgery with axillary dissection. As demonstrated by the absence of visualized lymph nodes after both injections, the axillary dissection could be considered as complete in only 34.6% of the investigated patients. The greatest part of lymph nodes, remaining after surgery, corresponds to the inferior and central groups (after interdigital injection). In 15% of the ca
