The authors present two patients with acute myeloid leukaemia and pulmonary-disseminated form of zygomycosis developed during the period of bone marrow aplasia. Diagnosis was established on necropsy on the basic of the patho-histological finding of wide, short and nonseptate hyphe with irregular branching. Hyphe were clearly recognized on Gomori methenamine Silver stained preparations. There were multiple haemorrhagic-necrotic infarcts of different organs due to the mycotic invasion of blood vessels. The authors discuss some some important diagnostic and therapeutic problems.

A 41-year-old man was admitted for evaluation of hemoptysis, dysphagia, and pleuritic chest pain associated with a mediastinal mass. Esophagography demonstrated a fistula between the mass and the esophagus. Results of histoplasmosis complement fixation serologic testing suggested an active infection. The sensitivity of the Grocott-modified Gomori's methenamine-silver nitrate technique for the detection of fungi is sometimes low, especially for Mucor spp. We modified the Grocott technique by replacing chromic acid with periodic acid in the oxidation step. The use of periodic acid instead of chromic acid enhanced the detectability of Mucor spp. in histopathological sections. Other parameters should be assessed with a high number of cases under different conditions. We propose our protocol as one of the options in practice, especially in cases suspected of Mucor spp. infection.

We report a 74-year-old male presented to an outpatient dermatology clinic in Manaus, Amazonas, with a one-year history of pruritic, keloidal lesions on his left lower extremity. Histopathology showed round structures in reticular dermis. Grocott methenamine silver stain revealed numerous round yeasts with thick double walls, occurring singly or in chains connected by tubular projections. The diagnosis was lobomycosis. Although the keloidal lesions presented by this patient are typical of lobomycosis, their linear distribution along the left lower limb is unusual.

Disseminated cryptococcosis is a life-threatening infection with cutaneous dissemination in 10% to 20% of cases. We describe seven patients with disseminated cryptococcosis with variable cutaneous manifestations. AIDS was a predisposing factor in six patients.
