A tool for the psychophysical assessment of olfactory dysfunction in patients with COVID-19.

Numerous studies have reported that patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) experience alterations in the sense of smell. Therefore, there is an increased need for a psychophysical evaluation tool for olfactory dysfunction in patients with COVID-19 without increasing the risk of virus spread. We applied a single-use sniffing-bead system, which consisted of small beads and a disposable plastic handpiece, to patients with COVID-19 presenting with olfactory dysfunction. The bead sets contained eight concentrations of 2-phenylethyl alcohol (PEA), which has been used in olfactory function

Psychophysical Evaluation of the Capability for Phantom Limb Movement in Forearm Amputees.

A phantom limb is the sensation that an amputated limb is still attached to the body and is moving together with other body parts. Phantom limb phenomenon is often described on the basis of the patient's subjective sense, for example as represented using a visual analog scale (VAS). The aim of this study was to propose a novel quantification method for behavioral aspect of phantom limb by psychophysics. Twelve unilateral forearm amputees were asked to perform phantom wrist motion with various motion frequencies (60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200, 220, 240% of preferred speed). The attainmen…

Psychophysical Vision Simulation of Diffractive Bifocal and Trifocal Intraocular Lenses.

PURPOSE: The visual performance of monofocal, bifocal, and trifocal intraocular lenses was evaluated by human individuals using a vision simulator device. This allowed investigation of the visual impression after cataract surgery, without the need actually to implant the lenses. METHODS: The randomized, double-masked, three-way cross-over study was conducted on 60 healthy male and female subjects aged between 18 and 35 years. Visual acuity (Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study; ETDRS) and contrast sensitivity tests (Pelli-Robson) under different lighting conditions (luminosities from 0.

The Interplay of Preference, Familiarity and Psychophysical Properties in Defining Relaxation Music.

BACKGROUND: The stress response has been well documented in past music therapy literature. However, hypometabolism, or the relaxation response, has received much less attention. Music therapists have long utilized various music-assisted relaxation techniques with both live and recorded music to elicit such a response. The ongoing proliferations of relaxation music through commercial media and the dire lack of evidence to support such claims warrant attention from healthcare professionals and music therapists. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of these 3 studies was to investigate the correlational relat

Psychometric functions for efficient and effective psychophysical testing of sensory function.

An efficient test for sensory function has been reported using random order pairs of real and sham stimuli. The constant magnitude of the real stimulus is chosen such that the first error in a patient's forced-choice report on the order of real and sham stimulation, immediately indicates abnormal sensory function. This magnitude just exceeds a critical large percentile of the psychometric function (i.e. the relationship between percentage of detection and stimulus magnitude in healthy subjects). The aim was to determine psychometric functions for one tongue site and six facial sites for adjust

Perceptual distances of breathy voice quality: a comparison of psychophysical methods.

Experiments to study voice quality have typically used rating scales or direct magnitude estimation to obtain listener judgments. Unfortunately, the data obtained using these tasks are context dependent, which makes it difficult to compare perceptual judgments of voice quality across experiments. The present experiment describes a simple matching task to quantify voice quality. The data obtained through this task were compared to perceptual judgments obtained using rating scale and direct magnitude estimation tasks to determine whether the three tasks provide equivalent perceptual distances ac

Usefulness and feasibility of psychophysical and electrophysiological olfactory testing in the rhinology clinic.

TOPIC: Olfactory dysfunction may be assessed in the clinic with psychophysical testing and electrophysiological recording. Chemosensory event-related potentials (CSERPs) constitute an objective method to assess chemosensory function. Olfactory and trigeminal stimuli activate chemoreceptors from the olfactory neuroepithelium and from the nasal mucosa to evoke an electrophysiological response respectively called olfactory (OERPs) and trigeminal ERPs (TERPs). The purpose of this study is to assess the usefulness and feasibility of these diagnostic tools in the rhinology clinic and to correlate th

Effects of hearing preservation on psychophysical responses to cochlear implant stimulation.

Previous studies have shown that residual acoustic hearing supplements cochlear implant function to improve speech recognition in noise as well as perception of music. The current study had two primary objectives. First, we sought to determine how cochlear implantation and electrical stimulation over a time period of 14 to 21 months influence cochlear structures such as hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons. Second, we sought to investigate whether the structures that provide acoustic hearing also affect the perception of electrical stimulation. We compared psychophysical responses to cochlea

Psychophysical indexes of temporal processing abnormalities in children with developmental dyslexia.

Children with dyslexia and children progressing normally in reading performed several perceptual tasks to determine (a) the psychophysical measures that best differentiate children with dyslexia from children with average reading abilities; (b) the extent of temporal processing deficits in a single, well-defined group of children with dyslexia; and (c) the co-occurrence of visual and auditory temporal processing deficits in children with dyslexia. 4 of our 12 psychophysical tasks indicated differences in temporal processing ability between children with dyslexia and children with good reading

The use of psychophysical tuning curves to explore dead regions in the cochlea.

OBJECTIVE: "Dead regions" are regions in the cochlea with no functioning inner hair cells (IHCs) and/or neurons. Amplification (using a hearing aid) over a frequency range corresponding to a dead region may not be beneficial and may even impair speech intelligibility. The objective of this article is to illustrate the use of psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) as a tool for investigating dead regions and to illustrate the variety of audiogram configurations that can be associated with dead regions. We explore the influence of signal level and signal frequency to test the hypothesis that the fr

[Psychophysical symptoms of demyelinating diseases of the optic nerve in multiple sclerosis].

Visual system channels were examined in 25 patients with multiple sclerosis. A new complex of symptoms was detected, reflecting the acute stage and the chronic demyelinizing process, which includes disorders of contrast, color, and spatial contrast sensitivity and stereoscopic vision. This can be useful in differential diagnosis of optic nerve diseases and evaluation of the visual system function in multiple sclerosis and prediction of the disease course.

Psychophysical evidence for a general temporal processing deficit in children with dyslexia.

The hypothesis of a general (i.e. cross-modal) temporal processing deficit in dyslexia was tested by examining rapid processing in both the auditory and the visual system in the same children with dyslexia. Participants were 10- to 12-year-old dyslexic readers and age-matched normal reading controls. Psychophysical thresholds were estimated for auditory gap and visual double flash detection, using a two-interval, two-alternative forced-choice paradigm. Significant group differences were found for the auditory and the visual test. Furthermore, temporal processing measures were significantly rel

A psychophysical study of discomfort produced by repeated filling of the urinary bladder.

Psychophysical studies were performed in 10 healthy, female volunteers using urinary bladder distension (UBD) as a visceral stimulus. Stimulus methodology was similar to that used clinically for obtaining cystometrograms with a fixed-rate (100 cc/min normal saline) filling of the urinary bladder, occasional pauses and simultaneous measure of bladder pressure using a catheter-transducer assembly. During bladder filling, subjects were asked to report sensations by verbal report and by using an electronic, hand-held, visual-analog-scale device. Sensations evoked by UBD were generally localized to

Further studies of psychophysically determined maximum acceptable weights and forces.

The effects of lifting boxes without handles, pulling long distances, carrying different size boxes, combining three handling tasks, and lifting with extended horizontal reach were studied using a psychophysical methodology. Six male industrial workers performed 42 variations of lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying tasks. Lifting boxes without handles produced consistent decreases (median, 16%) in maximum acceptable weights when compared with lifting boxes with handles. Lifting with extended horizontal reach (approximately 48 cm) produced consistent decreases (median, 48%) in maxi

Psychophysical observations on patients with neuropathic pain relieved by a sympathetic block.

Patients with sympathetically maintained pain (SMP) were tested with noxious heat pulses, innocuous mechanical stimuli, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation before and during local anesthetic sympathetic blocks that relieved their pain. The perceived intensity of the pain evoked by these stimuli was measured by the patients' responses on a visual analog scale and compared to the responses obtained when the same stimuli were applied to contralateral normal skin. In 5 of 7 patients tested, graded noxious heat stimuli (43-51 degrees C) applied to painful skin resulted in heat-pain inte

Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome: electrophysical and psychophysical findings.

Four cases of Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome were studied through electrophysiological and psychophysical examinations, and findings were correlated with those of fluorescein angiography. In all cases the macula showed degenerative changes, including a bull's eye appearance. The fundus periphery could be devoid of clumps of pigmentation, but all cases showed profound functional abnormalities that affected the macula and the periphery, impairing both the cone and rod systems equally. Bull's eye macula associated with severe, diffuse functional abnormality of the macula and peripheral retin

Age-related effects on the threshold, psychophysical function, and pleasantness of menthol.

Participants were 20 persons half of whom were 18 to 26 years of age (M = 21) and half of whom were over 65 years (M = 75). All were ambulatory, noninstitutionalized, and reported good to excellent health. The stimulus was menthol delivered in air to the nostrils. Threshold was measured using the up-down staircase method. Intensity and pleasantness were measured by magnitude estimation. The average threshold for the elderly participants was significantly higher than for young participants. The median slope of the intensity function was steeper by a factor of two for younger adults. The average

Physiological and psychophysical measures from humans with temporary threshold shift.

Tuning curves and amplitude-intensity functions on wave I and wave V of the auditory-evoked brain stem response and psychophysical tuning curves were obtained from human subjects (N = 5) with noise-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS). All tuning curves were measured with the same stimuli. Maskers were pure tones presented simultaneously with the signal which was a 3.6-kHz tone pip. TTS was produced by a narrow-band noise centered at 2.6 kHz and presented at 86 dB SPL for 8 h. The maximum mean TTS was 28 dB and occurred at 3.5 kHz. Although intersubject variability of TTS was small, individ

A simple psychophysical technique provides early diagnosis in optic neuritis.

Patients with optic neuritis describe image fading which is particularly evident at bright light levels. The effect is dependent on adaptation level, and high adaptation levels serve as a provocative test. Kinetic and static perimetry and interferometric acuity tests repeated in time reveal this loss in sensitivity. The latter test, using a large field and a high luminance level, is particularly sensitive to both the residua of pathology and very early phases of disease, often before subjective manifestations of anomalies are present. These effects are large in patients with demyelinating dise

[Effect of different loading factors on the psychophysical development of young children].

The authors have examined 150 nursery children with an accelerated, normal and retarded psychophysical development. An analysis of home and social factors influencing the children's psychophysical development is presented. A direct relationship between the gravity of the negative factors and the degree of psychic development retardation is disclosed. The authors suggest that a system of measurees should be elaborated that would optimize the conditions for the development of those children. These measures should be based on creating a favourable environment for the children by forming special g
