Development of a new Peyronie's disease self-assessment screening app.

Peyronie's disease (PD) is an underdiagnosed and undertreated fibroproliferative disorder associated with the formation of plaques that results in penile curvature and discourages some men from seeking medical consultation. The PD self-assessment app, a digital application (app), was developed to increase PD awareness, provide men with a self-screening and educational tool for PD, and help eliminate barriers to seeking consultation with a physician. Prior to deployment, 4 board-certified urologists provided qualitative reviews on the app's usability and utility as a screening tool. The PD self…

Self-assessment of refractive errors using a simple optical approach.

BACKGROUND: This explorative study investigated procedures for the self-assessment of spherocylindrical refractive errors. METHODS: Eighteen participants with a mean age of 34.0 ± 8.8 years were enrolled. Adjustable Alvarez lenses were mounted in a rotatable ring holder and two procedures were tested for the self-adjustment: (1) rotation of the lens in three meridians: 0°, 60° and 120° and (2) rotation of the optotypes in the same meridians. Starting from maximum positive power, the participants were required to decrease the power of the Alvarez lens until the optotypes (0.0 logMAR) appeared …

Clinical value of self-assessment risk of osteoporosis in Chinese.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of high-risk population for osteoporosis is the key to preventing this disease. METHODOLOGY: In this cross-sectional study a continuous sample of 270 women and 89 men (age: 20-90 years) was divided into four groups by age (≤ 55 or > 55 years) and sex. Participants completed the IOF test. Low-, medium-, and high-risk grades were defined by an OSTA index of greater than -1, -1 to -4, and less than -4, respectively. RESULTS: Most participants were categorized in the low-risk group (240 people, 66.9%), followed by the medium-risk (102 people, 28.4%) and high-risk grou

Axillary web syndrome self-assessment questionnaire: Initial development and validation.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the great strides made in medical knowledge, surgery still remains a necessary part of the breast cancer treatment. Surgical procedures still lead to post surgical sequelae. The axillary web syndrome (AWS) is one such sequela, which can lead to disability, reduced arm mobility and compromised quality of life. It is often unidentified and the literature regarding its assessment is limited. To improve diagnosis and patient education, the Screening Test AWS (ST-AWS) questionnaire was drafted and applied at the European Institute of Oncology (EIO). MATERIALS AND METHOD: We p

Validation in Brazil of self-assessment protocols for dysphonia impact.

BACKGROUND: A patient's self-assessment of his/hers vocal problem and the analysis of the results of a treatment are means used to verify the effectiveness of an intervention and to develop directive procedures for clinical health practice. Psychometric instruments are the most common tools used to perform this task. Validation of self-assessment instruments may be carried out in several ways; however there should be clear and structured criteria involved in this process. AIM: To present the validation process of three voice self-assessment instruments for the Brazilian Portuguese language: V…

Self-assessment of morbidity following radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer.

The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of the morbidity following radical surgery for early stage cervical cancer. We performed a retrospective survey of all women who had undergone a radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy between the months of July 1995 and December 1996 inclusive at either the Royal Marsden or St George's Hospital (n =38), using a detailed questionnaire on bladder, ano-rectal and sexual function, both before and after treatment. Sixteen women (44.4%) received adjuvant radiotherapy. The mean interval between surgery and inquiry was 16.4% months (range 8-25 months

Assessment of self-stigma in epilepsy: Validation of the German version Epilepsy Self-Stigma Scale (ESSS-G).

OBJECTIVE: Self-stigma is the internalization of unfavorable public perceptions, which people with epilepsy (PWE) frequently experience. PWE with strong self-stigma have low self-esteem and are less likely to engage in treatment behavior. The Epilepsy Self-Stigma Scale (ESSS) has been developed and validated in Japan. We translated the ESSS into German for this study to examine its reliability and validity. METHODS: We created the German version of ESSS (ESSS-G) based on the original Japanese version. From May to October 2022, we recruited out- and inpatients from Bethel Epilepsy Centre, Univ

OBJECTIVE: To assess the flow rate obtained by catheters used in self intermittent catheterization. MATERIAL: In vitro comparative study designed to compare the average flow rate obtained by intravesical catheters, by repeated flowmetric measures. The catheters studied were the most used in France in Fr10, 12 and 14 for female catheters and in Fr12, 14 and 16 for male catheters. RESULTS: We observed a strict relationship between Charriere and flow rate, both in female and male catheters These results were statistically significant (P<0.05). For female catheters, the average flow rate varied

Self-confidence through teaching: Gender differences in medical students' self-assessment of dermatological skills and learning effects.

BACKGROUND: The ability to assess oneself realistically is central to medical education, as it enables students to identify their own strengths and weaknesses and can help prevent poor decision-making. Previous studies have shown that female students tend to underestimate their competencies, while male students tend to assess their abilities more realistically or overestimate them. The aim of the present study was to investigate gender-specific differences in the self-assessment of dermatological knowledge and skills among medical students and to compare these with objective test results. Using self-assessments to enhance business continuity programmes.

Self-assessments have limitations and are no substitute for independent audits of a business continuity programme. Nevertheless, they can be an economical way to identify gaps, enhance the programme and create awareness. Self- assessments can also help prepare the programme and team members for an independent audit. In a resource-constrained environment, self-assessments can provide an opportunity to obtain measurable outputs about current state that can be tracked over time to capture improvement and maturity or identify deficiencies. Self-assessments can have a valuable place in any business…
