Three out of seven serum samples from Ecuadorian Indians had very high antibody levels against Bothrops nasutus venom, and IgG concentrates of these sera effectively neutralized this venom when subsequently injected into mice. It is concluded that the high mortality rate among these Indians would be even higher if there were not such natural protection. Further research into active immunization of humans should be encouraged.

From 1976 to 1999, we conducted a prospective study of overall and cause-specific mortality among the population of 42 villages of south-eastern Senegal. Of 4,228 deaths registered during this period, 26 were brought on by snakebites, 4 by invertebrate stings and 8 by other wild or domestic animals. The average annual mortality rate from snakebite was 14 deaths per 100,000 population. Among persons aged 1 year or more, 0.9% (26/2,880) of deaths were caused by snakebite and this cause represented 28% (26/94) of the total number of deaths by accident. We also investigated the snake fauna of the

Envenomation caused by venomous snakes can induce clinical symptoms and signs resembling those of traumatic acute compartment syndrome (ACS), but it is uncertain whether its treatment guidelines are applicable or beneficial for ACS that is associated to snakebites. Nonetheless, recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of trauma-induced ACS, particularly following fractures of the tibial diaphysis, are extrapolated to the diagnosis and treatment of snakebites despite evidence that the ensuing injuries are frequently not true ACS. Most biologists agree that the venom of snakes, especially

BACKGROUND: Snakebites remain a devastating and life-threatening environmental hazard. While the management of snakebites has been well described in humans, few clinical data and guidelines exist for dogs, especially in Korea.
OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical features of 70 dogs with snakebite wounds in Korea.
METHODS: The medical records of 72 dogs that presented to three animal hospitals from June 2008 to July 2021 were reviewed; among these, 70 dogs that met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Their signalment, history, clinical signs, physical examination, bl

Current available data on snake bites in Nepal are based solely on hospital statistics. This community-based study aimed at evaluating the impact of snake bites and determining the risk factors associated with a fatal outcome in southeastern Nepal. A total of 1,817 households, selected by a random proportionate sampling method, were visited by trained field workers in five villages. Extensive data from snake bite victims during the 14 previous months were recorded and analyzed. One hundred forty-three snake bites including 75 bites with signs of envenoming were reported (annual incidence = 1,1…

The epidemiology and exposing causes of snake bites were studied in 274 patients between 1 January 1982 and 30 December 1990. They comprised 142 males (51.82%) and 132 females (48.18%). Their ages ranged from 1 month to 86 years old. The age group most frequently bitten found in this study was between 15 to 29 years old amounting to 106 cases (38.69%). Of those 274 cases, 212 (77.37%) were the victims of poisonous snakes, namely, the green pit viper (Trimeresurus spp.) 156 cases (73.58%), the cobra (Naja naja) 53 cases (25.00%), Russell's viper (Vipera russellii siamensis) 3 cases (1.42%), whi…

One hundred thirty-two cases of snake bites in adults from the Asir region of southern Saudi Arabia occurring the period 1989-1992 were studied. Of 15 snakes killed, 10 were identified as Echis coloratus and five as were Coluber rhodorachis. The clinical presentation of those bitten by the 10 identified E. coloratus were not very different from cases in which the snake was not identified, favoring the conclusion that the commonest snakes inflicting bites in this region are the saw-scaled or carpet vipers of the genus Echis. The response of adults to bites in this region is generally benign. Pa…

Limb adorning ornaments (LAO) can exacerbate the local effects of envenoming in case of venomous snake bite. Cultural presuppositions do inhibit victims from removing symbolically/ritually important jewelry even under circumstances that might increase the dangers of envenoming-induced gangrene formation. The recommendation to remove the LAO is usually skipped in guidelines and if at all included the very real hazard is uncommonly documented. We observed 14 cases of snake bite with LAO on the bitten limb with minimal to severe local complications. The possible reasons were discussed with recomm

CONTEXT: In the Americas, the main representatives of the family Elapidae are coral snakes of the genus Micrurus, of which 33 species are in Brazil. They are the smallest cause of venomous snakebite in Brazil. We analyzed literature reports of coral snake bites in Brazil from 1867 to 2014, and provide a brief review of case series and reports of coral snake bites in the Americas in general.
METHODS: Only reports with clinical descriptions of envenomation were included. The variables recorded included identification of the offending snake, patient's age, sex, bite site, clinical manifestations…

In order to appreciate certain aspects of the epidemiology of snake bites and the availability of antivenom in Niamey (the capital of Niger), we performed a series of retrospective and prospective studies. The retrospective study involved 175 snake bite patients hospitalised from 1 January 1997 to 31 December 1999 in the internal medicine and surgery wards of the two national hospitals of Niamey. The average age of patients was 29 years, with 3 years and 80 years as limits. The average number of snake bites was 58 cases per year with an annual incidence of approximately 10 cases for 100,000 in…

We report two cases of envenomation by the black bellied swamp snake, Hemiaspis signata, with expert identification of the snakes. In the first case a 12 year old boy, who after the removal of the pressure immobilisation bandage, developed decreased fibrinogen levels and positive cross-linked fibrinogen degradation products (XDPs), but normal prothrombin time and activated partial prothrombin time. These changes resolved over 8h with no treatment. In the second case a 7 year old boy had local pain, swelling and axillary lymphadenopathy following the bite. These cases indicate the potential for

INTRODUCTION: Considering the cost of Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) and irregularity in its supply, there is often a need to curtail doses of ASV, despite guidelines for management of snake bite. During June 2013 to September 2013, when ASV was in short supply, our institutional committee reviewed the overall hospital statistics of snake bite cases as well as scientific literature and formulated a working modified protocol that used low dose of ASV in snake bite cases.
AIM: To retrospectively analyse and compare the modified ASV protocol versus conventional ASV protocol with respect to outcome, numb

The dose of Anti Snake Venom (ASV) in hemotoxic snake bite depends on the amount of venom injected and species of snake. All trials in South East Asia have studied different doses of ASV, wherein the ASV in high dose group itself was lower than the dose that is recommended in Indian National protocol. These studies favored low dose protocol, as there was no difference in mortality and morbidity between the groups. So, this study intended to assess the efficacy of National protocol in reducing morbidity and mortality in hemotoxic snake bite in comparison to current protocol followed in institut

A 19 year old male was admitted to a tertiary care centre in Sri Lanka, with a history of snake bite while sleeping at night. A killed specimen of a snake was brought with the patient. It had been identified as a non-venomous snake by the doctor and handed over to relatives, with a comment to that effect. Patient had no clinical or laboratory evidence of envenoming on admission. Patient developed bilateral ptosis six hours after alleged snake bite, soon followed by respiratory paralysis and was treated with Indian polyvalent anti-venom serum. After 12 h of the bite, patient had developed hypot

This report details the case of a 51-year-old man with a Tiger snake bite who developed systemic envenomation, coagulopathy and thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) requiring renal replacement therapy. He received plasma exchange as additional therapy while awaiting confirmation of the cause of the TMA. We discuss clinical decision making in detection of systemic envenomation and management of the rare complication of TMA, as well as current Australian guidelines around antivenom administration. This is the fourth known documented case of TMA from a Tiger snake bite in Australia.

Venomous snake bite without envenoming ('dry-bite') has been recognized throughout the world, but neglected in the Brazilian literature. Forty cases of patients bitten by venomous snakes of the genera Bothrops (lance-headed vipers) and Crotalus (South American rattlesnakes), confirmed by identification of the captured or dead snake, were seen in a 34-month prospective study carried out in a teaching hospital in southeastern Brazil. Out of the 33 cases of lance-headed viper and 7 of rattlesnake bite, respectively 10 (30.3%) and 3 (42.9%) had no clinical or laboratory evidence of local or system

Snakebite is an acute life-threatening medical emergency and is included among the neglected tropical diseases in India. The incidence of snakebite mortality is particularly high in Southeast Asia and India has the highest number of cases of snakebites with a mortality of 35,000 to 50,000 cases per year according to the World Health Organization (WHO) direct estimation. There are three families of venomous snakes in Southeast Asia which mainly include Elapidae, Viperidae, and Colubridae. Snakebite victims show varied clinical presentations ranging from local signs to systemic signs of envenoma

Snake bite is very common in India. Ischemic stroke after snake bite has been described in the literature sparsely. Furthermore, the onset of stroke and its clinical reversibility is a rarity. Here, we present a case of snake bite with ischemic stroke which has clinically reversible outcome.
