Clinical management of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with anodontia: case report.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare hereditary disorder with a characteristic physiognomy. The case of a 5-year-old child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and complete anodontia is presented. Because of the anodontia and the need for treatment at an early age, the prosthetic management of such a young child can be difficult. Complete dentures were provided to encourage a normal psychological development and to improve the function of the stomatognathic system.

Condylar movements during mastication.

To investigate the relationship between mastication and TMJ abnormalities, the incisal point and condylar movements during mastication were analysed in two normal subjects and six patients with stomatognathic dysfunction. The patients with stomatognathic dysfunction were two patients with unilateral anterior disk displacement with reduction, two with unilateral anterior disk displacement without reduction, and two with unilateral osteoarthritis. The incisal point movement was recorded using Sirognathograph Analysing System, and condylar movement was recorded with a pantograph. The movement pat

An acoustic model of the respiratory tract.

With the emerging use of tracheal sound analysis to detect and monitor respiratory tract changes such as those found in asthma and obstructive sleep apnea, there is a need to link the attributes of these easily measured sounds first to the underlying anatomy, and then to specific pathophysiology. To begin this process, we have developed a model of the acoustic properties of the entire respiratory tract (supraglottal plus subglottal airways) over the frequency range of tracheal sound measurements, 100 to 3000 Hz. The respiratory tract is represented by a transmission line acoustical analogy wit

[A case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome].

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, an inherited connective tissue disorder, is characterized by skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility and skin fragility. The disease is at least classified into 10 types, I to X, based on clinical features, biochemical abnormalities of the connective tissue and the mode of inheritance. A case is reported of a 6-year, 8-month-old girl who showed the features of the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VII. The findings were as follows: 1) Soft and velvety touch skin, characteristic joint hypermobility, talipes varus, and ventricular septal defects were present. 2) Widely set

Neuromuscular Responses of the Cranio-Cervico-Mandibular System During Professional "110th Targa Florio" Rally Competitions: An Electromyographic Study in Real-World Racing Conditions.

Background/Objectives: Professional motorsport imposes substantial biomechanical, postural, and cognitive demands that require continuous neuromuscular adaptations to ensure vehicle control and head stabilization during competition. Although the cranio-cervico-mandibular system may contribute to these adaptive responses, its role in rally performance remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate neuromuscular adaptations of the cranio-cervico-mandibular system in professional rally drivers under real-world racing conditions and to explore the relationship between masticatory muscl

[Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, disability and oral health in a community-dwelling elderly population].

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is involved in important activities of the stomatognathic system for nutrition, such as chewing or swallowing. If the physiological tolerance of its components is exceeded, it can trigger symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). OBJECTIVES: To assess and relate the symptoms of TMD, functional limitations and estimates of self-perceived oral health and general geriatric population in a communitydwelling elderly population. METHODS: An observational study was performed. Ninetyfour persons belonging to units of Granada Geriatric Da…

A prospective randomized study comparing two different degrees of mandibular advancement with a dental appliance in treatment of severe obstructive sleep apnea.

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of two different degrees of mandibular advancement (MA), 75% versus 50%, on somnographic variables after 6 months of dental appliance treatment in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A further purpose was to compare the number of adverse events on the stomatognathic system and the effects of dental appliance treatment on the presence of daytime sleepiness. Eighty-six males with severe OSA (apnea index > or = 20) were randomly allocated to either 75% or 50% MA. Forty patients in the 75% MA group and 37 patients in the 50% MA …

Removable partial denture in special clinical conditions.

Controversies concerning the prosthetic treatment through removable or fixed dentures until the age of 18 existed and continue to exist due to the structural instability of the stomatognathic system. In this communication we present a special experience, acquired about the treatment of some clinical situations in which the removable partial denture has been found appropriate with respect to certain features as bone substance loss as a consequence of traumatisms or tumor extirpations, oligodontia, cleft lip and palate. The clinical situations that will be presented refer to a group of 29 patien…

Cleidocranial dysplasia: etiology and stomatognathic and craniofacial abnormalities.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare disorder which is inherited as an autosomal genetic trait. It is characterized by defective ossification, delayed bone and tooth development, stomatognathic and craniofacial abnormalities, and it is caused by mutations in the RUNX2 gene that is responsible for osteoblast differentiation. The purpose of this review is to collect and analyze data in the literature on orofacial typical manifestations of the syndrome and to present knowledge of the eziopatogenics mechanisms of the CCD. Clinical, genetic, aetiopathogenetic studies on this syndrome were compli

[Odontology and orthodontics during the renaissance (Bartholomeo Eustachio)].

During the Renaissance (14th-16th cent.) many significant progresses were noticed in the field of Anatomics. This was a result of the fact that many Greek intellectuals had been forced to immigrate to N. Italy because of the conquest of Constantinople and the dissolution of the Byzantine Empire. On the other hand, the dissection of human bodies had been allowed. During this flourishing the first among the most famous dessectors of that time was Andrea Vesalius succeeded by Bartholomeo Eustachio, professor of Anatomics at the famous, that time, university of Sapienza (N. Italy). Eustachio is th

Clinical exam and electrovibratography detecting articular disk displacement: a comparative study.

The complete evaluation of the stomatognathic system is essential for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The evaluation should not only include the occlusal static aspects, but also the functional aspects. This is because the latter could be altered and one or more components of the stomatognathic system could be involved, including the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The most usual alteration found is articular disk displacement, which can affect the prognosis, and eventually the result in the need for orthodontic treatment. In order to add to the literature on recognition of these …

Treatment strategy for patients with ectodermal dysplasia: a case report.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary condition characterized by abnormal development of the skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and the stomatognathic system. There are many different types of ectodermal dysplasia of which X-linked anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is the most common. Multiple genes have been discovered to cause ectodermal dysplasias. With any form of ED, children may display a range of symptoms and challenging rehabilitation. This clinical report presents the treatment plan for a young patient with ED and anodontia requiring prosthetic restoration.
