Student-driven disability advocacy and education within the health professions: pilot survey results from a single-day virtual conference.

BACKGROUND: Health professional programs can promote equitable healthcare delivery but few programs include disability in these efforts. Limited opportunities exist for health professional students to engage with disability education within the classroom or beyond. The Disability Advocacy Coalition in Medicine (DAC Med) is a national interprofessional student-led organization which hosted a virtual conference for health professional students in October 2021. We describe the impact of this single-day virtual conference on learning and the current state of disability education across health prof

Knowledge Acquisition, Case Discussion, and Engagement in Health Professional Students Using Interactive Virtual Patient Cases Versus Written Case Studies: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Effective pain and opioid management education remains a persistent challenge in health professions training. Static case studies and lecture-based instruction are widely used but may be insufficient to develop the clinical reasoning and communication skills required in practice. Interactive virtual patient simulations, including those powered by large language models, offer scalable alternatives, but head-to-head comparisons of interactive and static case formats using identical content among interprofessional learner populations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This randomized control

Intensive hepatitis surveillance in Minnesota: methods and results.

After a large foodborne outbreak of hepatitis A in April 1974, the Minnesota Department of Health attempted to improve ongoing hepatitis surveillance with a system based on 1) a large centralized blood bank, which reports results of tests for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) on suspected hepatitis patients; 2) private physicians, who are encouraged to report cases; and 3) an epidemiology aide, who contacts all detected patients and their physicians. During the first year of this system, we detected 932 cases (24.5 per 100,000), a threefold increase over previous years, and obtained detailed

An epidemiological study of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Al-jabal Al-gharbi, Libya.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic parasitic infection in the Mediterranean region, including Libya and its Al-jabal Al-gharbi province. We aimed at studying the occupational relevance as well as other epidemiological aspects of CL. We investigated 140 CL cases who attended at Gharyan outpatient polyclinic during a period of 6 months in 2009. CL infection was clinically diagnosed and confirmed by demonstration of Leishmania parasites on smears from lesions. Our findings showed that males were more affected than females (P=0.04), and people above 10-years were more affected than younger

Hepatitis B Screening and Immunity Gaps in Cambodia: Should Vaccination Be Mandated for Healthcare Workers and Health Sciences Students?

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major public health challenge globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where diagnosis, treatment, and vaccination coverage remain suboptimal. In Cambodia, despite more than two decades of inclusion of HBV vaccination in the national immunization program, protective immunity among healthcare workers and health sciences students is not routinely assessed. This policy-oriented perspective examines gaps in HBV immunity among health sciences students. Recent screening data from a Cambodian medical university (2025) reveal that
