INTRODUCTION: The radiocarpal complex is the structure formed by the distal radioulnar, radiocarpal and midcarpal joints; these joints are compartments, each anatomically separated from the other. An appropriate arthrographic study with three-compartment injection better demonstrates the capsuloligamentous structures than conventional radiography. In our series of over 60 dacryocystograms using the digital subtraction technique we report on two cases in which this examination was done postoperatively. The fine, detailed presentation of the topography showed that the dacryorhinostomy was functionally open in spite of the suspicion of clinical failure. In the second case, the fine fistulas between the nasolacrimal duct and maxillary sinus could only be demonstrated by the subtraction study. Digital subtraction imaging (DSI) has been widely used in angiography but less commonly applied to sialography. Over a 3-year period 109 patients referred for sialography, 42 males and 67 females with a mean age of 44 years (range 8-85 years), were examined using a digital subtraction imaging technique. 13 patients went on to have an interventional procedure, stone removal or duct dilatation. The role of DSI imaging in sialography and its use in facilitating interventional procedures on the salivary glands are discussed.

A case report is presented describing a 27-year-old woman with invasive trophoblastic hydatidiform mole metastatic to the lung. Gamma scintiscanning, using a polyclonal and monoclonal antibody specific to human chorionic gonadotropin, hCG, and labeled with Tc-99m, is described. The area of the primary lesion in the uterus was demonstrated with both antibodies tested without computer subtraction techniques; metastatic deposits in the lung were detected only with the aid of blood pool subtraction techniques.
