Swine brucellosis: current perspectives.

Brucella suis is a significant zoonotic species that is present in domestic livestock and wildlife in many countries worldwide. Transmission from animal reservoirs is the source of human infection as human-to-human transmission is very rare. Although swine brucellosis causes economic losses in domestic livestock, preventing human infection is the primary reason for its emphasis in disease control programs. Although disease prevalence varies worldwide, in areas outside of Europe, swine brucellosis is predominantly caused by B. suis biovars 1 and 3. In Europe, swine are predominantly infected wi…

Endometriosis model development swine.

Despite the prevalence of endometriosis in the human population, there is a shortage of animal models for studying it. The authors describe the development of a swine model of endometriosis that allows researchers to evaluate laparoscopic techniques and instruments for diagnosing and treating the condition.

Risk of Swine Influenza Virus Spillover at the Human-Swine Interface - a Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: We conducted this scoping review to describe the factors that influence the risk of spillover of Swine Influenza Virus (SIV) at various human-swine interfaces. METHODS: We used the PubMed and EMBASE databases to identify relevant articles published until February 2024. We included cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and ecological studies. Two authors screened the titles, abstracts, and full texts. The extracted details were presented in tables and figures. RESULTS: Among the 55 studies, the majority were conducted in the United States (n =…

Isolation and sequencing of swine carbonic anhydrase VI, an enzyme expressed in the swine kidney.

BACKGROUND: Carbonic anhydrase VI (CA-VI) is produced by the salivary gland and is secreted into the saliva. Although CA-VI is found in the epithelial cells of distal straight tubule of swine kidneys, the exact function of CA-VI in the kidneys remains unclear. RESULTS: CA-VI was located in the epithelial cells of distal straight tubule of swine kidneys.A full-length cDNA clone of CA-VI was generated from the swine parotid gland by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, using degenerate primers designed based on conserved regions of the same locus in human and bovine tissues. The cDN…

CD1D knockout swine are permissive to African swine fever virus genotype II infection.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is an important pathogen of domestic and wild suids and the causative agent of African swine fever (ASF). ASFV displays a tropism for myeloid cells, predominately of the monocyte/macrophage lineage, which is critical for ASFV pathogenesis. However, the mechanisms that govern the cellular tropism of ASFV are complex and incompletely understood. ASFV can enter susceptible cells through several mechanisms. One way is by clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) via interaction with the host glycoprotein CD1d, encoded by the CD1D gene, and disruption of CD1D expression s…

Clinical Indicators of Moribundity in Swine Experimentally Inoculated with African Swine Fever Virus.

African swine fever virus (ASFV), the causative agent of African Swine Fever (ASF), is an infectious disease of swine that is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality in naive populations. ASFV is challenging to work with in vitro and the in vivo immune response remains an active area of study. Vaccine development, pathogenesis, and diagnostic assay development studies often require use of live swine housed in high-containment laboratories. Studies of this type are intended to obtain key data yet must minimize the pain and distress experienced by the animals. To implement humane e…

African swine fever virus infection in Classical swine fever subclinically infected wild boars.

BACKGROUND: Recently moderate-virulence classical swine fever virus (CSFV) strains have been proven capable of generating postnatal persistent infection (PI), defined by the maintenance of viremia and the inability to generate CSFV-specific immune responses in animals. These animals also showed a type I interferon blockade in the absence of clinical signs. In this study, we assessed the infection generated in 7-week-old CSFV PI wild boars after infection with the African swine fever virus (ASFV). The wild boars were divided in two groups and were infected with ASFV. Group A comprised boars who…

SWINE INFLUENZA : II. A HEMOPHILIC BACILLUS FROM THE RESPIRATORY TRACT OF INFECTED SWINE.

1. A hemophilic bacillus has been regularly obtained in culture from the respiratory tract of a series of swine experimentally infected with swine influenza and from a small number of spontaneous field cases of the disease. It has not been observed in respiratory tract cultures from a group of swine free from influenza. 2. The cultural and morphological characters of the organism have been described and the name Hemophilus influenzas (variety suis) suggested. The organism exhibits marked serological diversity, since only two out of eight strains studied were serologically identical. It is usua…

The First CRISPR-Based Therapeutic (SL_1.52) for African Swine Fever Is Effective in Swine.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a high-consequence pathogen that causes African swine fever (ASF), for which mortality rates can reach 90-100%, with death typically occurring within 14 days. ASF is currently a highly contagious pandemic disease responsible for extensive losses in pig production in multiple affected countries suffering from extended outbreaks. While a limited number of vaccines to prevent ASF are in use in south-east Asia, vaccines are not widely available, are only effective against highly homologous strains of ASFV, and must be used prior to an outbreak on a farm. Current…

Influenza A virus transmission in swine farms and during transport in the swine supply chain.

The last influenza pandemic in 2009 emerged from swine and surveillance of swine influenza is important for pandemic preparedness. Movement of swine during husbandry, trade or marketing for slaughter provide opportunities for transfer and genetic reassortment of swine influenza viruses. Over 90% of the swine slaughtered at the central swine abattoir in Hong Kong are imported from farms located in multiple provinces in mainland China. There is opportunity for virus cross-infection during this transport and slaughter process. Of the 26,980 swabs collected in the slaughterhouse in Hong Kong from …
