Diagnostic accuracy of conventional orthodontic radiographic modalities and cone-beam computed tomography for localization of impacted maxillary canine teeth.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment planning for an impacted canine tooth requires accurate information about its position. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of two conventional orthodontic radiographic modalities with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for localization of impacted maxillary canine teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs, lateral cephalograms, and CBCT scans of 30 patients with unilaterally impacted maxillary canine teeth were retrieved from the archives. Eight expert orthodontists evaluated the parameters related to the location of impa

Deep‑learning‑based detection of open‑apex teeth on panoramic radiographs using YOLO models.

OBJECTIVES: The use of deep learning in detecting teeth with open apices can prevent the need for additional radiographs for patients. The presented study aims to detect open-apex teeth using You Only Look Once (YOLO)-based deep learning models and compare these models. METHODS: A total of 966 panoramic radiographs were included in the study. Open-apex teeth in panoramic radiographs were labeled. During the labeling process, they were divided into 6 classes in the maxilla and mandible, namely incisors, premolars, and molars. AI models YOLOv3, YOLOv4, and YOLOv5 were used. To evaluate the perf

Multiple idiopathic apical root resorption: a case report.

AIM: To report a rare case of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption in an adult male. SUMMARY: A 27-year-old male with no history of medical or dental disorders was referred by his family dentist for evaluation of extreme root resorption involving the apical region of most of his teeth. A complete haematological investigation was conducted and all the results were within the normal range. Mobility of the teeth was physiologic and no abnormal periodontal pockets were observed. A diagnosis of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption was made. KEY LEARNING POINTS: *Apical root resorption

The flaws in tooth root resorption assessment algorithms: the role of source position.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this project was to analyse the effects of X-ray source location on mathematical compensations used in the clinical assessment of external apical root resorption (EARR). METHODS: Using geometric constructions, governing equations were derived to express the relationships between actual tooth, root and crown lengths, and their image sizes on "before" and "after" radiographs. RESULTS: Good agreement was found between calculated and published experimental results. More importantly, errors associated with the assessment methods are demonstrated. CONCLUSION: It is esta

Anatomical and clinical considerations regarding the greater palatine foramen.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we mapped the topography of the greater palatine foramen (GPF), within the South-Eastern European population, according to clinically identifiable anatomical landmarks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used 100 dry adult human skulls, of which 75 were bilaterally dentate, whereas 25 were partially edentulous. RESULTS: The shape of the GPF was oval in 84% of the cases. The foramen was located internally from the third molar in 73% of the skulls. The greater palatine canal showed an antero-infero-medial direction in 82% of the cases. The average values of the distances betwe

Apicotomy: surgical management of maxillary dilacerated or ankylosed canines.

This clinical article reports a technique, apicotomy, for managing dilacerated or ankylosed canines. The records of 3 patients successfully treated with apicotomy are presented. Orthodontists observe clinically significant incidences of impacted maxillary canines in their daily practices. Several procedures have been described to bring an ankylosed, impacted tooth into occlusion. Luxation is the most widely used solution, but there are risks involved with that approach, and the success rate is low. Surgical repositioning has also been used, but morbidity is high, and the aggressiveness of the

Therapeutic protocols for avulsed permanent teeth: review and clinical update.

Traumatic injuries to permanent teeth include coronal and root fractures, subluxations, luxations, and avulsions. The most common complications after avulsions are necrosis of the pulp and root resorption. Treatment is often complex, time consuming, and expensive and requires multidisciplinary approaches such as endodontic and periodontal treatments, surgery, orthodontic movements, as well as esthetic coronal restoration. This review describes new clinical modalities for the treatment of avulsed teeth and discusses the rationale for their use.

Management of an avulsed tooth with severe root resorption.

Delayed replantation of an avulsed tooth with an open apex resulted in failure of revascularization, necrosis of the pulp and extensive external root resorption. Removal of the necrotic pulp and repeated intra-canal dressings of calcium hydroxide over a three year period arrested the inflammatory resorptive process. The process was replaced by replacement resorption leading to ankylosis and infra-occlusion of the affected tooth. As the tooth was asymptomatic, it was retained in the arch to act as a space maintainer. To improve aesthetics, the crown was recontoured using a light-cured resin.

[Root canal treatment of mandibular second premolar tooth with taurodontism].

INTRODUCTION: Taurodontism is a morphoanatomical change in the shape of a tooth. An enlarged body of a tooth with smaller than usual roots is a characteristic feature. Internal tooth anatomy correlates with this appearance, which means that a taurodontal tooth has a large pulp chamber and apically positioned furcations. This dental anomaly may be associated with different syndromes and congenital discoders. CASE OUTLINE: The case report presents the patient of a rare case of taurodontism in the mandibular second premolar with chronic periodontitis. Endodontic treatment was performed after den

Palatogingival groove mimicking as a mutilated root fracture in a maxillary lateral incisor: a case report.

This article presents a case of a palatogingival groove (PPG) in tooth No. 12 that was misdiagnosed as a mutilated root fracture. A PPG is a developmental anomaly that predisposes a tooth to a severe periodontal defect. The initial diagnosis of mutilated root fracture on tooth No. 12 was made solely from radiographs that showed a vertical and horizontal radiolucent line with a radiolucent halo-shaped bone resorption in relation to the root apex. Transillumination, bite test, surgical visualization of the site, and the use of high-end diagnostic modalitieswere not considered prior to the final

A retrospective analysis of factors influencing the success of autotransplanted posterior teeth.

BACKGROUND: Survival and success rates of tooth transplantations even after long follow-up periods have been shown to be very high. Nevertheless, it is important to analyse factors potentially influencing these rates. The aim of this study was to assess the influence on success of potential factors. METHODS: The research was based on a retrospective analysis of clinical and radiological data from a sample of 59 subjects (75 transplanted teeth). The follow-up period varied from 0.44 to 12.28 years (mean 3.95 years). Success rates were calculated and depicted with Kaplan-Meier plots. Log-rank t

Lower lip paraesthesia following restoration of a second premolar tooth. Case report.

A forty year old female patient developed paraesthesia of the right side of her lower lip following the placement of an extensive pin-retained amalgam restoration in her lower right second premolar tooth. Radiographs indicated that the mental foramen was close to the apex of this tooth and it was assumed that postoperative pulpitis and periapical inflammation had caused the paraesthesia through the effects of pressure on the mental nerve. The paraesthesia resolved following endodontic treatment of the lower second premolar tooth and the patient has had no further signs or symptoms.

Effect of Magnet Position on Tipping and Bodily Tooth Movement in Magnetic Force-Driven Orthodontics.

The goal of our study is to launch magnetic force-driven orthodontics. This continuous study investigated the influence of magnet position on tipping and bodily tooth movement, using 3D printing technology and digital analysis. Orthodontic typodont models (TMs) for space-closure were 3D printed to mimic maxillary central incisors. Nd-Fe-B magnets were placed in the middle third (Model-M), and the cervical third (Model-C), of the tooth. TMs, before and after movement, were digitally scanned and superimposed. The 3D digital coordinates (X, Y, and Z axes), and rotations (yaw, pitch, and roll) of

[The periodontal ligament as a driver of dentoalveolar regeneration].

The periodontal ligament plays a central role in maintening and repairing the dentoalveolar complex. Unlike osseointegration around implants, the periodontal ligament functions as a dynamic, bone-remodelling system in which osteoclastic and osteoblastic processes are continuously coordinated. This enables it to actively maintain and regenerate bone, the periodontal space and soft tissues. Autotransplantation offers a unique clinical situation in which this biological potential is directly harnessed by transferring a vital periodontal ligament to a new location. In a donor tooth with an open ap

In vitro comparison between apex locators, direct and radiographic techniques for determining the root canal length in primary teeth.

AIM: To compare the accuracy of three electronic apex locators in the measurement of the root length of primary teeth with the radiographic and direct visual techniques. METHODS: The sample of the in vitro study was 102 root canals of primary molars. For the direct visual technique, the root canal file was introduced into the canal until its tip passed the apical foramen, then it was moved back to the limit of the foramen or root resorption and the measurement was made with a millimetre ruler. For the radiographic measurement, a calibrated and blinded researcher (κ > 0.87) measured the root c
