Vitamins and nutraceuticals in glaucoma research.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. There is no current cure for glaucoma, and it is managed by lowering intraocular pressure, a major modifiable risk factor. Nutraceuticals have long been studied to protect retinal ganglion cells and the optic nerve from degeneration by targeting the metabolic and neurodegenerative aspects of glaucoma, and even contributing to pressure lowering. A range of vitamins, minerals and nutraceuticals have been and are undergoing investigation for glaucoma. Compounds such as NAD-boosting supplements, antioxidants, and combination therapie…

Homocysteine, B Vitamins, and Cognitive Impairment.

Moderately elevated plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) is a strong modifiable risk factor for vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Prospectively, elevated tHcy is associated with cognitive decline, white matter damage, brain atrophy, neurofibrillary tangles, and dementia. Most homocysteine-lowering trials with folate and vitamins B6 and/or B12 tested as protective agents against cognitive decline were poorly designed by including subjects unlikely to benefit during the trial period. In contrast, trials in high-risk subjects, which have taken into account the baseline B vitamin status, show…

Role of vitamins in gastrointestinal diseases.

A tremendous amount of data from research was published over the past decades concerning the roles of different vitamins in various gastrointestinal diseases. For instance, most vitamins showed an inverse relationship with the risk of colorectal carcinoma as well as other malignancies like gastric and esophageal cancer in observational trials, however interventional trials failed to prove a clear beneficial preventive role. On the other hand, more solid evidence was obtained from high quality studies for a role of certain vitamins in specific entities. Examples for this include the therapeutic…

B vitamins and the aging brain.

Deficiencies of the vitamins folate, B(12) , and B(6) are associated with neurological and psychological dysfunction and with congenital defects. In the elderly, cognitive impairment and incident dementia may be related to the high prevalence of inadequate B vitamin status and to elevations of plasma homocysteine. Plausible mechanisms include homocysteine neurotoxicity, vasotoxicity, and impaired S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methylation reactions vital to central nervous system function. In light of this, it is imperative to find safe ways of improving vitamin B status in the elderly without…

Antioxidants and vitamins in clinical conditions.

Various reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be produced from normal biochemical, essential metabolic processes or from external sources as exp … athione, ubiquinol, uric acid, and essential minerals) and nutritional antioxidants from diet (i.e. vitamins E, C, carotenoids). Possible mechanisms of nutritional depletion and side effects of high intake are in the article described.

Vitamins, minerals and supplements: part two.

Vitamins and minerals are organic food substances found only in plants and animals and are essential to the normal functioning of the body. Although only required in small amounts, as previously discussed in the past decade there has been an increased use of vitamin, mineral, herbal and nutritional supplements in the general population. While deficiencies in such nutrients can be harmful to health, conflicting claims have been made about the health benefits of such supplementation. In the second of an occasional series on vitamins, minerals, and supplements, JUNE THOMPSON gives an overview of …

Neural tube defects, vitamins and homocysteine.

Folic acid (multivitamins) reduce the recurrence and occurrence of neural tube defects (NTDs). Vitamin profiles seem not suitable to identify women at risk for NTDs. A subset of these women have hyperhomocysteinaemia and a mutation of the gene for thermolabile methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). From studies with the rat embryo in vitro, it can be concluded that the de- and remethylation cycle of methionine, being folate and vitamin B12 dependent, is crucial for embryonic and fetal growth probably via generation of DNA, proteins and polyamines. Nutrition for the embryo is also supplie…

[Fat-soluble vitamins in clinical practice].

The identification of fat-soluble vitamins at the beginning of this century had a major impact on human health. The classical deficiency symptoms could be treated with effective means. After a period of rather low interest in fat-soluble vitamins, we are now in the midst of a new wave of research on these vitamins, with a large number of reports in influential international journals. It has been demonstrated that the fat-soluble vitamins have many more functions than previously known, and suboptimal status has been linked to several diseases. In this review, we describe these new aspects of th…

[Significance of vitamins in parenteral nutrition].

Parenteral nutrition is incomplete without vitamins. Marginal vitamin deficiency under parenteral nutrition is certainly more common than generally recognized. Even marginal and undiscernable vitamin deficiency interferes with healing processes and increases the rate of complications since vitamins are involved in a variety of ways in wound healing, regeneration processes and immune function. If total parenteral nutrition is necessary for longer periods of time, exceeding 5 days, vitamins should be substituted in the recommended doses. The assessment of a marginal vitamin deficiency is difficu…

[3 problem vitamins in Latin America].

The list of vitamins recognized as essential in human nutrition is extensive. Only some of them, however, are attributed an important role in public health. The present paper deals with three of these selected because their deficiencies still prevail in important sectors of population in the Latin American Region: vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin D. For each vitamin the paper discusses the scientific bases for their requirements, as well as pragmatic considerations to be taken into account for the derivation of recommended dietary intakes. Reference is made to the logic of applying the concept…

Critical vitamins for low birthweight infants.

All vitamins are "critical" by definition for the growing infant. However, some of them are particularly relevant to the preterm or low birthweight (LBW) infant in whom a deficiency can occur more frequently than in a full-term newborn. In LBW infants vitamin deficiency may develop due to (1) low body stores at birth, (2) low intake, (3) limited absorption, (4) increased need or utilization, (5) presence of certain clinical conditions. The first reason concerns all lipid-soluble vitamins, and particularly vitamin E and K, which cross the placenta with some difficulty. Among hydrosoluble vitami…

Vitamins and hair: Sham or science?

There has been growing interest in supplements and hair care products beyond standard medical treatments to improve hair health. Vitamins are essential micronutrients required to maintain homeostasis in the body and are essential for hair growth. There is robust literature documenting vitamin deficiencies in patients with hair disorders such as alopecia areata and telogen effluvium; however, there is limited scientific backing to understand whether vitamin supplementation in healthy individuals has a tangible impact on hair health. We have reviewed the evidence given that clinical trials are l…
