Thoracolumbar syrinx in association with Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a deletion on chromosome 7. Clinically it consists of multiple cardiovascular and craniofacial structural abnormalities as well as developmental delay, specific cognitive difficulties, and a characteristic personality. Although scoliosis is a noted manifestation of the disorder, syrinx in association with Williams syndrome has not been reported previously in the literature. Here we present the case of a child with Williams syndrome, scoliosis, and a thoracolumbar syrinx that was successfully treated surgically. We recommend that children with …

[Williams-Beuren syndrome: presentation of 82 cases].

OBJECTIVE: We performed a retrospective review of a series of 82 cases of Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) and associated diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A series of 82 patients (47 males and 35 females) who consulted at the hospital because of mental retardation and/or congenital cardiopathy were included. The patients were studied mainly from a neurological and cardiological point of view, and secondarily because of endocrinological and nephrological problems. Since description of the chromosomal abnormalities provoking the syndrome, we perform karyotyping in all patients with suspected WBS.

Natural history of Williams syndrome: physical characteristics.

The natural history of Williams syndrome, including medical complications, growth patterns, and problems in adulthood, was investigated. A growth pattern characterized by delay in the first 4 years of life, catch-up growth in childhood, and low ultimate adult height was found. Despite multiple medical problems in infancy, including feeding problems, failure to thrive, colic, and otitis media, mean age at diagnosis was 6.4 years. Developmental disabilities and cardiovascular disease were the major concerns in childhood. The older children developed progressive joint limitation and hypertonia. A…

Stenosis of the thoracic aorta in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a multisystem congenital disorder affecting 1/8000 live births. Our objective was to review our experience with stenosis of the thoracic aorta (STA) in these patients. A retrospective review was undertaken of consecutive WS patients at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia from January 1, 1980, through December 31, 2007. WS was diagnosed by an experienced medical geneticist and/or by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Stenosis was diagnosed with either echocardiography or cardiac catheterization. Freedom from intervention was determined using Kaplan-Meier analysis.…

Perioperative care of the patient with Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome, initially described by Williams, Barratt-Boyes, and Lowe in 1961, consists of characteristic dysmorphic features, congenital heart disease, and distinctive behavioral and emotional traits. In addition to acquired and congenital heart disease, manifestations in the renal, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and central nervous system may have implications during the perioperative period. Congenital and acquired heart disease can be a significant issue as sudden death, related to abnormalities of the coronary arteries, has been reported perioperatively in these patients. The authors p…

[William-Beuren syndrome: description of a case].

The Authors describe a case of William-Beuren Syndrome, also know as "Fanconi-Schlesinger Syndrome" or "Idiopathic Hypercalcaemia, supravalvular aortic stenosis, elfin facies syndrome". Irritability and chronic constipation are early features. Hypercalcaemia may occur in infancy but rarely after 1 year age. The facies is characteristic. Supravalvular aortic stenosis is the most frequent cardiac abnormality. Other common features are short stature, mental retardation and significant behavioural disorders. In this case report typical facies, short stature, behavioural disorders are associated wi

Occurrence of an astrocytoma in a patient with Williams syndrome.

The Williams elfin facies syndrome (Williams-Beuren syndrome) is a disorder characterized by a typical facies, supravalvular aortic stenosis and mental retardation. Its coexistence with a brain tumor has, so far, never been described. Recently, we treated a patient who was previously diagnosed as having Williams syndrome for a cerebral astrocytoma. In view of the incidence of astrocytomas in children and the occurrence of Williams syndrome, we want to report this coincidence.

Supravalvular aortic stenosis in William's syndrome.

We report supravalvular aortic stenosis in a 12 year old patient who presented with mental retardation, malformed teeth, broad lower lips, pectus carinatum, clinodactyly, kyphoscoliosis with symptoms of shortness of breath. On examination presence of better volume pulse in right radial artery with ejection systolic murmur best heard in right 2(nd) intercostal space were noted. Patient was diagnosed as having William's syndrome with investigations demonstrating Supravalvular aortic stenosis with a gradient of 170 mm Hg.

Cleft palate in a patient with Williams' syndrome.

Cleft lip or palate has not been reported in the medical literature as a part of Williams' syndrome. We present a patient who had cleft palate among other congenital manifestations. This patient's immediate postnatal period clinically seemed to have a Pierre Robin sequence. With the development of the craniofacial complex, microgenia and micrognathia with glossoptosis gradually became apparent. On further assessment, the patient showed other clinical findings that suggested a syndromic association. This required a complete evaluation to discard other conditions that present with low psychomoto

Williams syndrome: a guide to diagnosis and treatment.

Williams syndrome is a congenital disorder characterized by mental retardation, vascular abnormalities including supravalvular aortic stenosis, and a loquacious personality. The genetic etiology of this syndrome has recently been isolated to the seventh chromosome, namely the elastin gene. Initial diagnosis of Williams syndrome rests largely with practitioners who see children in the first two years of a child's life, and the health and longevity of individuals with the disorder may depend heavily on accurate and timely diagnosis. Although often diagnosed in childhood, the adolescent and adult…

A new and rare form of Williams' syndrome.

A 7 year old girl and her mother have typical phenotypic features of the Williams' (elfin facies) syndrome, and both have only mild mitral regurgitation with mitral valve prolapse (MVP). Mitral valve prolapse has been reported in only three cases but pure mitral insufficiency has not been reported alone. In this paper two cases of a new rare form of Williams' syndrome with MVP are presented and this rare disorder is discussed.

[120 cases of the Williams and Beuren syndrome].

120 cases of the Williams-Beuren syndrome were collected by 11 cardiological centres in France, to determine the incidence of the various clinical signs and to obtain information on its aetiology, outcome and treatment. The selection criteria for inclusion in the series was typical facies. No particular complications were reported during pregnancy. Boys were a little more affected than girls. The birth weight was low and problems, especially digestive, often occurred in the first months. Cardiac signs were usually detected from the first year, although the exact diagnosis was usually made late

A case of Williams syndrome with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Williams syndrome (WS) cases have been reported to have with 25-100 times greater increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). SCD has been reported in cases without any evidence of structural cardiovascular anomalies. Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is characterized by short PR interval and delta wave. Ventricular preexcitations can develop paroxysmal reentrant tachycardia through Kent bundle or less frequent atrial fibrillation and in some cases with accessory pathway effective refractory period (APERP) under 250 ms considered as risky and may lead to SCD. WS associated w…

Congenital long-QT syndrome concealed by hypercalcemia in Williams Syndrome.

We report a case of gene-positive long-QT syndrome (KCNH2) in a patient with concomitant Williams Syndrome. The hypercalcemia that developed in association with Williams Syndrome pseudo-normalized the QTc interval on surface ECG, concealing the clinical and electrocardiographic manifestations of the disease. Initiation of medical therapy for hypercalcemia unmasked the prolonged QT interval, allowing for the diagnosis of long-QT syndrome to be made.

The middle aortic syndrome: an important feature of Williams' syndrome.

The middle aortic syndrome, with diffuse narrowing of the thoracic and abdominal aorta, was present in 10 of 18 patients with Williams' syndrome (55%). There were 3 thoracic coarctations, and 2 abdominal coarctations, with gradients greater than 20 mmHg across the zone of narrowing. Seven patients had mild renal arterial stenosis, and 6 had visceral arterial stenoses. Ten were hypertensive. Measured dimensions of the aortic lumen failed to increase with age in 3 males who had serial angiographic studies. One developed mesenteric arterial stenosis, with mild bilateral renal arterial stenoses, b

Spatial exploration and navigation in Down syndrome and Williams syndrome.

We know little about the ability to explore and navigate large-scale space for people with intellectual disability (ID). In this cross-syndrome study, individuals with Down syndrome (DS), individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) and typically developing children (TD; aged 5-11 years) explored virtual environments with the goal of learning where everything was within the environment (Experiment 1) or to find six stars (Experiment 2). There was little difference between the WS and DS groups when the goal was simply to learn about the environment with no specific destination to be reached (Experim…
