The Effect of Payer Status on Survival of Patients with Stage I/II Non-small Cell Lung Cancer: NCDB 1998-2011.

BACKGROUND: One of the challenges to improving access to care is identifying disparities in health care. To determine the influence of insurance status on outcome for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we analyzed data from the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) from 1998-2011. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 299,914 patients diagnosed with NSCLC registered in the NCDB were analyzed. Overall survival (OS) was the outcome variable, and payer status was the primary predictor variable. Other variables included stage, grade, lymph node status, age, race, Charlson Comorbidity Index,

Cumulative effective radiation dose received by blunt trauma patients arriving to a military level I trauma center from point of injury and interhospital transfers.

BACKGROUND: Trauma patients sustaining blunt injuries are exposed to multiple radiologic studies. Evidence indicates that the risk of cancer from exposure to ionizing radiation rises in direct proportion to the cumulative effective dose (CED) received. The purpose of this study is to quantify the amount of ionizing radiation accumulated when arriving directly from point of injury to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), a level I trauma center, compared with those transferred from other facilities. METHODS: A retrospective record review was conducted from 1st January 2010 through 31st

Long-term surgical outcomes for myxopapillary ependymomas of the cauda equina.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate our treatment strategy for myxopapillary ependymomas of the cauda equina. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Some patients with myxopapillary ependymoma develop cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dissemination leading to poor prognosis. Because of the rarity of this tumor, there is no consensus on its optimal treatment options and prognosis. METHODS: We reviewed 25 cases of myxopapillary ependymomas, treated surgically between 1972 and 2005. The mean postoperative follow-up period was 10.4 years. The effects of surgical margins at surgery and

Preoperative radiation therapy with selective dose escalation to the margin at risk for retroperitoneal sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPSs) are rare tumors with poor survival rates due to difficult resectability and high local and distant recurrence rates. Preoperative radiation therapy appears to have dosimetric advantages to utilize the tumor as a tissue expander to limit exposure of small bowel to higher radiation doses. METHODS: Between June 1999 and December 2003, 16 consecutive patients with biopsy-proven RPS were treated with preoperative radiation with selective dose escalation. This included 45 grays (Gy) in 25 fractions to the entire tumor plus margin and a boost dose of 57.5

Latency period of thyroid neoplasia after radiation exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the temporal sequence for developing benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms after radiation. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Therapeutic radiation is associated with thyroid neoplasms in humans and animals. Some question whether thyroid cancers develop de novo or from benign thyroid neoplasms. Little information, however, is available concerning the time to development of benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms after radiation exposure. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the records of 171 consecutive patients who had a history of exposure to radiation and were treated surg

Prevention of local recurrence after surgical debulking of nodal and subcutaneous melanoma deposits by hypofractionated radiation.

BACKGROUND: Local recurrence (LR) after surgical debulking of nodal or subcutaneous melanoma deposits defeats the purpose of operation and may worsen prognosis if the procedure was performed for stage III disease. To decrease LR rates in this setting, we extended the previously described role of hypofractionated radiation for melanoma deposits of the neck to all situations where the patient was felt to be at high risk for postoperative relapse after resection of bulky disease. METHODS: Hypofractionated external beam radiation was administered in 6-Gy doses for 5 fractions (total dose 30 Gy, g

MicroRNAs in prostate cancer radioresistance: mechanisms, target-based network analysis and translational opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PC) is a global major health concern, and radiotherapy is part of the standard treatment for locally advanced disease. Despite medical advances, the effectiveness of this therapy is often compromised by radiation resistance, a complex and adaptive process that allows tumor recurrence and progression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as key regulators of radiation response, influencing DNA repair, apoptosis, and survival signaling. These molecules actively contribute to radiation resistance acquisition and mediate dynamic interactions within the tumor ecosystem. MET

Optimization of X-ray acquisition parameters for reduced radiation exposure while maintaining 2D-DSA image quality during lower limb angioplasty.

BACKGROUND: Achieving optimal image quality with minimal radiation exposure allows operators to accurately assess and treat target lesions during percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) without being subjected to increased radiation risk. Depending on clinical needs, imaging protocols are optimized and evaluated. This study aims to compare two imaging protocols-conventional dose protocol (CDP) and low dose protocol (LDP)-to evaluate the impact of fine-tuned X-ray acquisition parameters (detector entrance dose, copper filtration, tube voltage) and post-processing parameters (edge enhancemen

Histone deacetylase inhibitor, Trichostatin A mitigates ionizing radiation induced redox imbalance by regulating NRF2/GPX4/PINK1/PARKIN signaling in mice intestine.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal-acute radiation syndrome (GI-ARS) caused by moderate to high doses of ionizing radiation exposure contribute to early death in humans. GI injury is also a common adverse effect seen in cancer patients undergoing abdominal/pelvic radiotherapy. Currently, no countermeasure agents have been approved for medical management of GI-ARS. The present study aims to evaluate the mechanism of action of Trichostatin A(TSA), a pan histone deacetylase inhibitor, against radiation-induced GI injury. METHODS: TSA (150 ng/kg bw) was administered to mice 1 h and 24 h after 15 Gy abd

BUB1 Inhibition Overcomes Radio- and Chemoradiation Resistance in Lung Cancer.

Background: Despite advances in targeted therapies and immunotherapies, traditional treatments like microtubule stabilizers (paclitaxel, docetaxel), DNA-intercalating platinum drugs (cisplatin), and radiation therapy remain essential for managing locally advanced and metastatic lung cancer. Identifying novel molecular targets could enhance the efficacy of these treatments. Hypothesis: We hypothesize that BUB1 (Ser/Thr kinase) is overexpressed in lung cancers and its inhibition will sensitize lung cancers to chemoradiation. Methods: BUB1 inhibitor (BAY1816032) was combined with cisplatin, pacli
