Damage to the host cadaver, simulating the effects of scavenging, differentially affects fitness of entomopathogenic nematode species.

Insect cadavers infected by entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) are defended against scavengers by chemical mechanisms and other means. Despite these defences, the cadaver may be bitten before being rejected. In this study, we investigated the effect of damage to the cadaver cuticle on the fitness of nematodes (Heterorhabditis downesi Stock, Griffin & Burnell or Steinernema feltiae Filipjev) developing inside. We first quantified the severity of scavenger damage to EPN-infected Galleria mellonella Linnaeus cadavers in the field, and separately, with crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer) in the l…

A feasibility cadaver study for placing screws in various pelvic osseous fracture pathways using a robotic arm.

INTRODUCTION: The use of a robotic system for the placement of pedicle screws in spine surgeries is well documented in the literature. However, there is only a single report in the United States describing the use of a robotic system to place two screws in osseous fixation pathways (OFPs) commonly used in the treatment of pelvic and acetabular fractures in a simulated bone model. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the use of a robotic system to place screws in multiple, clinically relevant OFPs in a cadaveric model and to quantitatively measure accuracy of screw placement relative to…

A Patient-Specific Three-Dimensional-Printed Surgical Guide for Dorsal Scaphoid Fracture Fixation: A Comparative Cadaver Study.

PURPOSE: This study proposes a patient-specific three-dimensional (3D)-printed surgical guide designed for scaphoid fracture fixation through a limited dorsal approach. METHODS: Computed tomography scans of five cadaveric wrists were modeled in 3D segmentation software and cannulated screw guidewire trajectory was planned. Custom 3D-printed surgical guides for guidewire insertion were designed for each scaphoid. Guidewire placement was performed with and without the surgical guide through a dorsal approach. Postoperative scans were overlaid with the planned trajectory and compared. Five varia…

Double Inferior Vena Cava with Major Predominance of the Left Inferior Vena Cava: A Cadaver Case Report.

We encountered a case of a double inferior vena cava with major predominance of the left inferior vena cava during an anatomical dissection course for medical students in 2015. The right inferior vena cava (normal inferior vena cava) was 2.0 mm wide, and the left inferior vena cava was 23.2 mm wide. The fine right inferior vena cava began at the right common iliac vein, ascended along the right side of the abdominal aorta, and then joined the left inferior vena cava at the level of the lower margin of the first lumbar vertebra. The dominant left inferior vena cava started from the left common

Accuracy of specimen-specific nonlinear finite element analysis for evaluation of radial diaphysis strength in cadaver material.

The feasibility of a user-specific finite element model for predicting the in situ strength of the radius after implantation of bone plates for open fracture reduction was established. The effect of metal artifact in CT imaging was characterized. The results were verified against biomechanical test data. Fourteen cadaveric radii were divided into two groups: (1) intact radii for evaluating the accuracy of radial diaphysis strength predictions with finite element analysis and (2) radii with a locking plate affixed for evaluating metal artifact. All bones were imaged with CT. In the plated group…

Quantifying surgical access in eyebrow craniotomy with and without orbital bar removal: cadaver and surgical phantom studies.

BACKGROUND: Eyebrow craniotomy is a recently described minimally invasive approach for tackling primarily pathology of the anterior skull base. The removal of the orbital bar may further expand the surgical corridor of this exposure, but the extent of benefit is poorly quantified. We assessed the effect of orbital bar removal with regards to surgical access in the eyebrow craniotomy using classic morphometric measurements in cadaver heads. Using surgical phantoms and neuronavigation, we also measured the 'working volume', a new parameter for characterising the volume of surgical access in thes…

Targeting accuracy of transcranial magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound brain therapy: a fresh cadaver model.

OBJECT: This work aimed at evaluating the accuracy of MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MRgHIFU) brain therapy in human cadaver heads. METHODS: Eighteen heads of fresh human cadavers were removed with a dedicated protocol preventing intracerebral air penetration. The MR images allowed determination of the ultrasonic target: a part of the thalamic nucleus ventralis intermedius implicated in essential tremor. Osseous aberrations were corrected with simulation-based time reversal by using CT data from the heads. The ultrasonic session was performed with a 512-element phased-array tran…

Cadaver study of oesophageal insufflation with supraglottic airway devices during positive pressure ventilation in an obstructed airway.

BACKGROUND: Supraglottic airway devices (SADs) play an increasing role in airway management in clinical anaesthesia and emergency medicine. Until now, no data exist concerning the extent of oesophageal insufflation when oropharyngeal leak pressures are exceeded. METHODS: Laryngeal masks LMA-Supreme™ and LMA-ProSeal™, laryngeal tubes LTS-D and LTS II, Combitube™, and I-Gel were inserted into unfixed human cadavers. The oesophagus was connected to a volumeter, while the trachea was closed surgically to simulate complete airway obstruction. Volumes of oesophageal insufflation resulting from pres…

An apparatus for tensile and bending tests of perinatal, neonatal, pediatric and adult cadaver osteoligamentous cervical spines.

Investigations of biomechanical properties of pediatric cadaver cervical spines subjected to tensile or bending modes of loading are generally limited by a lack of available tissue and limiting sample sizes, both per age and across age ranges. It is therefore important to develop fixation techniques capable of testing individual cadavers in multiple modes of loading to obtain more biomechanical data per subject. In this study, an experimental apparatus and fixation methodology was developed to accommodate cadaver osteoligamentous head-neck complexes from around birth (perinatal) to full matura…

Changes in abdominal vascular tension associated with various leg positions in the anterior lumbar approach: cadaver study.

STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive cadaveric study measuring arterial tension. OBJECTIVE: Anterior lumbar surgery is technically challenging due to perioperative vascular complications. Many studies suggest approaches based on the anatomy of the abdominal vessel for safe vascular mobilization. However, the tension in the vascular structure is also important for adequate exposure of the target lesion. It has been established that the tension in the lumbar nerve at the root level can be changed by a straight leg raise test and that the structure of the vascular connection is similar to that of the neu…
