Co-existence of idiopathic generalized and focal epilepsy suggested by simultaneous EEG-fMRI: a case report.

We present a rare patient clinically suspected to have mixed idiopathic generalized and focal epilepsy, which was supported by BOLD pattern based on EEG-fMRI. A 37-year-old female with three types of refractory seizures starting at age six - tonic with breathing difficulties and confusion, generalized tonic-clonic, and focal with brief impairment of awareness and versive head movement, initially thought to represent atypical absences - was evaluated by EEG-fMRI. She was also shown to have three types of interictal epileptic discharges: generalized spike or polyspikes and slow waves, and left f

Functional imaging localization of complex organic hallucinations.

Background: fMRI of mental phenomena is quite difficult to perform because lack of patient's cooperation or because the symptoms are stable. In some exceptional cases, however, fMRI and DTI are capable to provide insights on the anatomy of organic hallucinations. Methods: In this report we describe a 14-year-old boy with a left fronto-dorsal tumor who experienced chronic complex brief, frequent and repetitive complex visual and auditory hallucinations. His clinical picture included multiple and severe social and mood problems. During a presurgical fMRI mapping the patient complained of having

A functional model of cortical gyri and sulci.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) have been broadly used in the neuroimaging field to investigate the macro-scale fiber connection patterns in the cerebral cortex. Our recent analyses of DTI and HARDI data demonstrated that gyri are connected by denser, streamlined fibers than sulci are. Inspired by this finding and motivated by the fact that DTI-derived fibers provide the structural substrates for functional connectivity, we hypothesize that gyri are global functional connection centers and sulci are local functional units. To test this funct

Processing of food, body and emotional stimuli in anorexia nervosa: a systematic review and meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies.

The characteristics of the cognitive processing of food, body and emotional information in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) are debatable. We reviewed functional magnetic resonance imaging studies to assess whether there were consistent neural basis and networks in the studies to date. Searching PubMed, Ovid, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library and Google Scholar between January 1980 and May 2012, we identified 17 relevant studies. Activation likelihood estimation was used to perform a quantitative meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. For both food stimuli and bo

Along-tract statistics allow for enhanced tractography analysis.

Diffusion imaging tractography is a valuable tool for neuroscience researchers because it allows the generation of individualized virtual dissections of major white matter tracts in the human brain. It facilitates between-subject statistical analyses tailored to the specific anatomy of each participant. There is prominent variation in diffusion imaging metrics (e.g., fractional anisotropy, FA) within tracts, but most tractography studies use a "tract-averaged" approach to analysis by averaging the scalar values from the many streamline vertices in a tract dissection into a single point-spread

Neural Correlates of Executive Functioning in Anorexia Nervosa and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are commonly reported to co-occur and present with overlapping symptomatology. Executive functioning difficulties have been implicated in both mental health conditions. However, studies directly comparing these functions in AN and OCD are extremely limited. This review provides a synthesis of behavioral and neuroimaging research examining executive functioning in AN and OCD to bridge this gap in knowledge. We outline the similarities and differences in behavioral and neuroimaging findings between AN and OCD, focusing on set shifting

The neural underpinnings of cognitive and postural profile of a young adult with congenital cerebellar athrophy: a longitudinal case report.

For decades the cerebellum has been conceived as an organ chiefly involved in motor control, gait and posture. However, more recent and increasing evidence shows that the cerebellum is also involved in cognition and affection, and that damage to this structure may significantly compromise the overall neuropsychological functioning. Here we report we report the evolution along time of a possible congenital cerebellar atrophy and its effects on gross motor and cognitive functioning in a 41-years old man. Advanced neuroimaging analyses are also provided in order to understand the anatomo-function

Integrating functional network topology, synaptic density, and tau pathology to predict cognitive decline in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) represents a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease and carries a high risk of progression to dementia. Disruptions in functional brain networks, synaptic degeneration, and tau pathology each serve as neural markers of cognitive decline in aMCI. In this study, we employed a multimodal neuroimaging approach to determine whether integrating these markers provides a more powerful explanation of cognitive deterioration than examining them individually. METHODS: Twenty-eight aMCI patients and 24 healthy controls underwent cognitive assessment,

Treatment-related associations of nucleus accumbens connectivity within mesocorticolimbic circuits in depression.

Pharmacological treatment remains a mainstay in managing depression, yet the neural correlates associated with treatment response remain incompletely understood. This study used multimodal neuroimaging to examine nucleus accumbens (NAc)-centered structural and functional alterations associated with fluoxetine and Shugan Jieyu Capsule (SG), a traditional Chinese medicine, in patients with mild-to-moderate depression (MMD). Sixty patients were randomized to an 8-week course of fluoxetine or SG. Depression severity was assessed using the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-24), and str

Combining functional, structural, and morphological networks for multimodal classification of developing autistic brains.

Accumulating neuroimaging evidence suggests that abnormal functional and structural brain connectivity plays a cardinal role in the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we constructed brain networks of functional, structural, and morphological connectivity using data from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), respectively. The neuroimaging data from a cohort of 50 individuals with ASD and 47 age-, gender- and handedness-matched TDC (age range: 5-18 years) were selected from the Autism

Behavioral, computational, and neuroimaging studies of acquired apraxia of speech.

A critical examination of speech motor control depends on an in-depth understanding of network connectivity associated with Brodmann areas 44 and 45 and surrounding cortices. Damage to these areas has been associated with two conditions-the speech motor programming disorder apraxia of speech (AOS) and the linguistic/grammatical disorder of Broca's aphasia. Here we focus on AOS, which is most commonly associated with damage to posterior Broca's area (BA) and adjacent cortex. We provide an overview of our own studies into the nature of AOS, including behavioral and neuroimaging methods, to explo

Association Between Cerebellar Metabolic Markers and Activities of Daily Living in Patients With Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3.

BACKGROUND: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that results in the impaired ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). However, there is a lack of objective neuroimaging indices to assess functional decline. In this study, we investigated the association between cerebellar metabolic rate as detected by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and ADL performance in patients with SCA3. METHODS: A total of 23 SCA3 patients underwent multivoxel MRS scans of the cerebellar cortex, dentate nucleus, and vermis and were analyzed for associations
