Risk factors for cervical dysplasia in Kerala, India.

A study in Kerala, India, confirmed the importance of genital hygiene in the fight against infections that have a role in the development of cervical dysplasia and cancer. Many women cannot afford sanitary pads, while adequate facilities for washing after coitus are often unavailable. Health education, satisfactory living standards, and the empowerment of women are prerequisites for reducing the incidence of cervical dysplasia.

Epidemiology of hepatitis B virus infection in India.

The average estimated carrier rate of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in India is 4%, with a total pool of approximately 36 million carriers. Wide variations in social, economic, and health factors in different regions may explain variations in carrier rates from one part of the country to another. Professional blood donors constitute the major high risk group for HBV infection in India, with a hepatitis B surface antigen positivity rate of 14%. Blood transfusions represent the most important route of HBV transmission among adults. However, most of India's carrier pool is established in early childhoo…

Prevalence of fungal corneal ulcers in northern India.

Fungal corneal ulcer is common in India due to the tropical climate and a large agrarian population that is at risk. Various factors such as trauma, the injudicious use of topical antibiotics and corticosteroids are involved. Many of the age and sex-related risk factors also play a minor role. This 6-year study from Northern India revealed that fungi were detected in 61 (8.4%) out of 730 patients investigated. Direct microscopy was positive in 51 (7%) and culture in 53 (7.3%) patients. Aspergillus spp. were the most common causative agents accounting for 25 (40.1%) of the isolates, followed by…

All the children newly diagnosed clinically as APM at the Institute of Child Health, Madras, during the period May 1988 to May 1989 were recruited. Stool specimen collection, transportation and identification of viruses by culture were done by standard procedures. The total number of children recruited was 312. Specimens were contaminated/insufficient in 10. Analysis was done for 302 cases. Polio virus type II was identified in 25.5% children, type I in 18.5%, type III in 15.9%, multiple polio

Multidrug resistant Salmonella typhi in Calicut, south India.

Eighty S. typhi strains isolated during the period of one year (July 1989 to June 1990) were tested for susceptibility to chloramphenicol, ampicillin, cotrimoxazole, gentamicin, kanamycin, cefazolin, furazolidone and ciprofloxacin. Determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by tube dilution method showed that the multiply resistant S. typhi strains were resistant to chloramphenicol and ampicillin up to a concentration of 1000 micrograms/ml. MIC of sulphamethoxazole was found to be 800 micrograms/ml and trimethoprim 160 micrograms/ml. The presence of R plasmid was demonstrated by r

Thermostability of Japanese encephalitis vaccine produced in India.

Different batches of bulk vaccine, final bulk at in-process level, finished freeze-dried and reconstituted Japanese encephalitis vaccine were assayed for their stability at temperatures of 22, 37 and 40 degrees C. After ultrazonal purification of 50 times concentrated brain suspension, JE Bulk vaccine was found to be stable for up to 2 years at 4 degrees C, however, the percentage loss in potency (log 10 N antibody titre) after 2.5 years was 24%. Three-times concentrated final bulk showed rapid deterioration by the fourth week at 37 and 40 degrees C. Freeze-dried JE vaccine maintained at 22 de

Sickle cell-beta+ thalassaemia in Orissa State, India.

The clinical, haematological, and some molecular genetic features of 17 Orissan Indian patients with sickle cell-beta+ thalassaemia (S beta+ thal) are described and compared with those in 131 Indian patients with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease. Patients with S beta+ thal had higher Hb A2 levels, and lower mean cell volume (MCV) and mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) compared to SS disease but no other haematological difference of statistical significance. High levels of Hb F occurred in both genotypes and the alpha+ thalassaemia gene frequency reached 0.47 in S beta+ thal and 0.32 in SS disease.…

Pain (7/7), redness (6/7), scleritis (5/7), reduced visual acuity (5/7), episcleritis (5/7), uveitis (3/7), proptosis, sclerokeratitis and conjunctivitis (2/7) each were the major ophthalmological features. One patient each had bilateral corneoscleral ulcers, eyelid infiltration, scleromalacia perforans and epiphora. Corneal, scleral and uveal tract involvement was observed more frequently than has been described in the literature. These complications responded favourabl
