Objective: Temporary enterostomies are life-saving in neonatal surgery, however, causing loss of fluid electrolyte, delays in distal bowel adaptation and thus delayed growth of newborns. In this study, we aimed to present the method and clinical results of distal stoma refeeding in premature and mature neonates. Methods: Between January 2012 and December 2017, records of newborn patients who underwent enterostomy and distal stoma refeeding were retrospectively analyzed. Premature and full term neonates who had distal stoma refeeding were evaluated by stoma indications, resection status, duratio

Congenital colonic stenosis is a rare pediatric condition. Since 1968, only 16 cases have been reported in the literature. To the authors' knowledge, multiple congenital colonic stenosis has not been previously reported in the literature. We report the case of a 2-month-old male, presented at our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a suspicion of intestinal malrotation. Clinical examination revealed persistent abdominal distension. During the enema examination, the contrast medium appeared to fill the lumen of the colon up to three stenotic segments and could not proceed further. Intraoperativel

Five cases of intrahepatic biliary cyst or cystic dilatation and one suspicious case were found (6.4%) among 93 survivors of biliary atresia. The age at manifestation of such cysts ranged from 6 months to 12 years. These cysts or cystic dilatations were treated surgically in two cases, by percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage (PTCD) in two, and not treated in one. Four patients are alive; one died of biliary atresia. Twenty-nine well-documented cases of intrahepatic biliary cyst were found in the literature, including five treated by the authors. The modes of dilatation were as follows:

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of and indication for laparoscopic methods for neonates with congenital duodenal obstruction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From September 2009 to October 2012, 40 newborns with duodenal obstruction underwent exploratory laparoscopy. With a lower-pressure pneumoperitoneum of 6-8 mm Hg and a suspending suture for the right liver elevator, the procedure was performed using four trocars 3-5 mm in diameter. Under laparoscopic vision, the causes of duodenal obstruction were diagnosed, and then the operation methods were determined by the type of obstruction.

PURPOSE: Small bowel atresia (SBA) presents with variable clinical features depending on anatomical location. We investigated the relationship between atresia location and preterm delivery.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 58 patients who underwent surgery for SBA at two institutions between April 2000 and March 2024. Patients were divided into preterm (<37 weeks, n=28) and term (≥37 weeks, n=30) groups. Clinical characteristics, prenatal findings, anatomical location, and surgical outcomes were compared. A logistic regression analysis identified independent predictors of preterm delivery

BACKGROUND: Bishop-Koop ileostomy has been widely used in pediatric patients with the intention of including as much bowel as possible in the intestinal transit early in the management of children with meconium ileus and intestinal atresia. In recent years, we have been using it as an alternative to test the distal bowel function before closure of a previously constructed ostomy in selected children with questionable distal bowel motility.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to present our experience with this alternative use of the Bishop-Koop ostomy.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional retrospe…

BACKGROUND: An infant born with pyloric atresia had development of intractable diarrhea and was found to have total epithelial detachment of gastric and small and large bowel mucosa. She had no skin abnormalities. Parental consanguinity and pyloric atresia in a sibling who died without autopsy suggest an inherited origin for this disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine defects in intestinal and skin cell adhesion.
METHODS: Histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural characteristics of the skin and gut of the patient were compared with that of normal control subjects. Distr

Thirty-five cases of biliary atresia that demonstrated the creation of internal fistula between intrahepatic bile ducts at the portahepatis and intestine and showed long-term bile flow after our hepatic portoenterostomy were investigated from various aspects. These 35 cases were divided into Group A cases, in which jaundice disappeared within three months after surgery, and Group B cases, in which persistent jaundice was seen more than three months after surgery. (1) Severe liver fibrosis and degeneration of intrahepatic bile ducts were more often seen in Group B cases than in Group A cases. (

Triple atresia, comprising esophageal atresia, duodenal atresia, and anorectal malformation, has no established management strategy in extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants. We report successful staged treatment in a 539-g infant with severe respiratory failure. Transabdominal esophageal banding and gastrostomy on Day 0 controlled airflow through the tracheoesophageal fistula without thoracic intervention. Duodeno-duodenostomy and transverse colostomy were performed on Day 18 (680 g), permitting enteral feeding. After growth to 1924 g, thoracoscopic repair of Gross type C esophageal atresi

Fetuses with concomitant duodenal atresia (DA) and esophageal atresia (EA) might develop in utero gastric rupture as well as neonatal respiratory complication due to dilated stomach and duodenum. Our patient with the typical "double bubble" appearance was highly suspected to have DA in the second trimester. Follow-up examinations revealed a massively dilated stomach and duodenum with a dilated distal esophagus, indicating concomitant DA and EA. With advancing pregnancy, the fetal abdomen progressively increased in size by retention of fluid in the closed loop of DA and EA. To avoid gastric per

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to review newborns with esophageal atresia (EA) with and without distal tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) combined with duodenal atresia (DA) or duodenal stenosis (DS) (web, windsock, diaphragm) to determine which clinical features and treatments give the best results.
METHODS: Twenty-four newborns were reviewed from 1971 to 2000 inclusive. Seven had EA and 17 had EA with TEF; 15 had DA and 9 had DS. One died after receiving only a gastrostomy. Seven underwent repair of both defects in 1 stage, whereas 16 were repaired separately.
RESULTS: Eighteen of 24

The VACTERL complex comprises renal agenesis and atresias of the alimentary and respiratory tracts. We report on a case with this combination causing severe oligohydramnios but with normal lung development. The likely protective mechanism for pulmonary development was an increase in alveolar pressure and reduced alveolar fluid loss due to the esophageal-tracheal malformation. This suggests the possible treatment of oligohydramnios by tracheal occlusion.

Structural anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract and anterior abdominal wall diagnosed in the perinatal period often require prompt surgical intervention. This article highlights the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of the more common lesions encountered in the neonate.

The diagnosis of possible duodenal atresia was made in a near-term fetus. The mother had developed polyhydramnios, and the fetus was found on sonography to have two communicating upper abdominal masses. It also failed to ingest contrast media after injection of radiopaque material into the amniotic sac. An esophageal atresia was found after delivery, in addition to the prenatally diagnosed duodenal atresia. The infant had a surgical repair 16 hours after delivery and survived.
