Influences of SMILE and FS-LASIK on Corneal Sub-basal Nerves: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To compare postoperative corneal sub-basal nerve density and number between small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK). METHODS: A search was made in PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane library for prospective comparative studies. The analysis was divided into two parts: network meta-analysis and traditional meta-analysis of the studies directly comparing two surgical groups. Stata 16 (Stata Corporation) and Rev-Man 5.4 (Cochrane) software were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Twelve studies (n = 775) were included. In

Traumatic displacement of laser in situ keratomileusis flaps: an integrated clinical case presentation.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic dislocation of laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) corneal flaps is an uncommon postoperative complication that could occur any time after LASIK, and could be visually devastating. We evaluated the visual outcomes, corneal sensation, tear function, and dry eye questionnaire results of patients with traumatic dislocation of LASIK flaps, including one LASIK flap amputation. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series. Seven patients who were diagnosed with traumatic displacement of the LASIK flap and underwent flap replacement surgery between August 2014 and Jan

The Percent Volume Altered in Correction of Myopia and Myopic Astigmatism With PRK, LASIK, and SMILE.

PURPOSE: To determine the volumes altered during photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: The volumes of stromal tissue affected by surgical correction of pure and astigmatic myopia were calculated in this theoretical study for PRK, LASIK, and SMILE treatments. These results were then used to calculate representative values for percent volume altered (PVA) restricted to stromal corneal tissue. RESULTS: For the same spherical equivalent, there were remarkable d

Visual evaluation of different multifocal corneal models for the correction of presbyopia by laser ablation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the visual quality of two theoretical multifocal corneal models designed to correct presbyopia by corneal photoablation. METHODS: Two theoretical multifocal corneal surfaces were analyzed by ray tracing: a central model (with a central zone for near vision and a peripheral zone for distance vision), and a peripheral model (with a central zone for distance vision and a peripheral zone for near vision). For both models, the effect of the size of the central zone and transition zone as well as the size of the pupil was evaluated. RESULTS: Our results show that a smaller tra

Femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis versus small-incision lenticule extraction: current approach based on evidence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Laser keratorefractive surgery achieves excellent visual outcomes for refractive error correction. With femtosecond laser, small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is an increasingly viable alternative to laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Comparative studies demonstrate similar efficacy and predictability between SMILE and LASIK, making it difficult for clinicians to choose which to use. This review thus compares femtosecond-LASIK (FS-LASK) and SMILE in various scenarios, to assist clinicians in deciding which refractive surgery procedure to recommend. RECEN

Pterygium after hyperopic laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK).

A 61-year-old Caucasian woman with hyperopia presented for laser refractive surgery. She had healthy eyes with the exception of a less than 0.5 mm Salzmann's nodule at 5 o'clock near the limbus of the right eye. She underwent bilateral hyperopic laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) combined with removal of the Salzmann's nodule. At six months, she was emmetropic with unaided vision of 6/6; however, at 10 months, she noticed a reduction of acuity in her right eye and was found to have a pterygium at 5 o'clock, encroaching 3.5 mm onto the corneal surface. She underwent excision b

Nevus Depigmentosus: An Update.

Nevus depigmentosus, a disorder of hypopigmentation, occurs in both sexes and all races. It most commonly presents in early infancy and childhood as a nonprogressive hypomelanotic macule. It is considered a form of cutaneous mosaicism due to somatic mutation in pigmentary genes, which results in functional impairment of melanocytes. Clinical forms include localized, segmental, and systemized. Rare cases of nevus depigmentosus may be associated with systemic features. Treatment is usually not required, although certain techniques such as suction-blister grafting, excimer laser, and cosmetic cam
