Peak oxygen consumption is positively associated with estimates of oxygen extraction and microvascular blood volume in veterans with chronic kidney disease.

Peak oxygen consumption (V̇o2peak) is reduced in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although cardiovascular and skeletal muscle factors are implicated in the declines of V̇o2peak, few studies have evaluated muscle oxygenation responses during exercise. We hypothesized that lower V̇o2peak in CKD would be associated with attenuated responses in muscle oxygenation compared with those without CKD. Forty-six male Veterans [CKD stages 3 and 4, n = 23; referent controls (REF), n = 23] completed the study. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing was performed on a treadmill using the modified Bruce

Effect of perfusion index on oxygen reserve index accuracy in estimating arterial oxygen tension in anesthetized dogs: Data reanalysis.

Multi-wave CO-oximetry, utilizing the oxygen reserve index (ORi), estimates arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) in mild hyperoxemia, between 100 and 200 mmHg, and concurrently quantifies local perfusion at the measurement site using the perfusion index (PI). This study explores how variations in PI influence the accuracy of ORi in estimating PaO2 in anesthetized dogs. Data from 37 mechanically ventilated dogs were retrospectively reanalyzed using a different approach. ORi and PI values were collected using a CO-oximeter. The data were categorized into four groups based on PI quartiles.

Electrocatalytic properties of a carbothermically obtained composite based on vanadium nitridophosphide in the hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction reactions.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are the key electrochemical processes of hydrogen energy. Transition metal phosphides, nitrides, carbides, chalcogenides and their composites are promising non-precious metal electrocatalysts for these processes. Catalysts based on so-called early d-metal compounds, particularly V, attract less attention compared to those based on late transition metals (Ni, Co, Fe, etc.), which can generally be explained by their less competitive catalytic characteristics. However, combining V-containing co

Transcutaneous oxygen tension-guided hyperbaric oxygen therapy for preventing skin necrosis after hyaluronic acid filler injections.

INTRODUCTION: Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, popular for facial cosmetic enhancements, pose risks of vascular complications like skin necrosis due to arterial blockage, necessitating effective treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). METHODOLOGY: This study presents a series of cases where measurements of transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) informed the application of HBOT for skin necrosis induced by HA. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND OUTCOMES: In cases 1 and 3, following the injection of HA, potential skin necrosis was observed. In addition to standard treatment, TcPO2 revealed va

Effects of canagliflozin on kidney oxygenation evaluated using blood oxygenation level-dependent MRI in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical studies suggest protective effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on kidney disease outcome. Chronic hypoxia has a critical role in kidney disease development, thus we speculated that canagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, can improve kidney oxygenation. METHODS: A single-arm study was conducted to investigate the effects of canagliflozin on T2* value, which reflects oxygenation level, in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) using repeated blood oxygenation level-dependent MRI (BOLD MRI) examinations. Changes in cortical T2* from before (Day 0) to after single-dose treatment (Day

High-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy versus conventional oxygen therapy in patients undergoing bronchoscopy: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing bronchoscopy, particularly those with pre-existing hypoxemia, face a significant risk of further deterioration in their oxygen saturation levels. This heightened risk necessitates the provision of supplemental oxygen therapy throughout the procedure, rendering it mandatory. High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) has been widely employed in the management of hypoxemic acute respiratory failure (ARF) in adults. Based on this, HFNC has been used in endoscopic procedures, but there are still few studies on HFNC in fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) patients. The purpose of this

Peak Oxygen Uptake is Slope Dependent: Insights from Ground Reaction Forces and Muscle Oxygenation in Trained Male Runners.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to explore the effect of treadmill slope on ground reaction forces and local muscle oxygenation as putative limiting factors of peak oxygen uptake in graded maximal incremental running tests. Thirteen trained male runners completed five maximal incremental running tests on treadmill at - 15%, - 7.5%, 0%, 7.5% and 15% slopes while cardiorespiratory and local muscle oxygenation responses as well as ground reaction forces were continuously recorded. Blood lactate concentration and isometric knee extensor torque were measured before and after each test. RESULT

Defect- and oxygen-rich nanocarbon derived from solution plasma for bifunctional catalytic activity of oxygen reduction and evolution reactions.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are key for renewable energy systems, including metal-air batteries, fuel cells, and water electrolysis. In particular, metal-air batteries require multiple catalysts for the ORR and OER. Thus, bifunctional catalysts are required to improve efficiency and simplify catalytic systems. Hence, we developed defect- and oxygen-rich nanocarbons as bifunctional catalysts through a one-pot formation by applying plasma discharge in mixed solvents of benzene with crown ether. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirm

Pre-oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen versus tight facemask in trauma patients undergoing emergency anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from major traumatic injuries frequently require emergency anaesthesia. Due to often compromised physiology and the time-sensitive management, trauma patients may be more prone to desaturate during induction of anaesthesia. We hypothesised that pre-oxygenation using high-flow nasal oxygen would decrease the risk of desaturation during induction of anaesthesia in trauma patients and the study therefore aimed to compare the frequency of desaturation when pre-oxygenation was performed with high-flow nasal oxygen or a traditional facemask. METHODS: This exploratory,

Myocardial Tissue Oxygenation and Microvascular Blood Volume Measurement Using a Contrast Blood Oxygenation Level-Dependent Imaging Model.

OBJECTIVES: We propose a method of quantitatively measuring drug-induced microvascular volume changes, as well as drug-induced changes in blood oxygenation using calibrated blood oxygen level-dependent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We postulate that for MRI signals there is a contribution to R2* relaxation rates from static susceptibility effects of the intravascular blood that scales with the blood volume/magnetic field and depends on the oxygenation state of the blood. These may be compared with the effects of an intravascular contrast agent. With 4 R2* measurements, microvascular blood

Exertional Desaturation in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: The Role of Oxygen Supplementation in Modifying Cerebral-Skeletal Muscle Oxygenation and Systemic Hemodynamics.

BACKGROUND: In patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) with isolated exertional desaturation, there are limited data regarding the effectiveness of oxygen supplementation during exercise training; the underlying mechanisms that contribute to these responses are unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine in these IPF patients the effects of oxygen supplementation during submaximal exercise (vs. medical air) on cerebral/skeletal muscle oxygenation and systemic hemodynamics. METHODS: In this randomized, cross-over, placebo-controlled trial, IPF patients (n = 13; 63.4 ± 9.6 years) without resting

The effects of post-operative oxygen supply on blood oxygenation and acid-base status in rats anaesthetized with fentanyl/fluanisone and midazolam.

In anaesthetic practice the risk of hypoxia and arterial blood gas disturbances is evident, as most anaesthetic regimens depress the respiratory function. Hypoxia may be extended during recovery, and for this reason we wished to investigate if oxygen supply during a one hour post-operative period reduced the development of hypoxia and respiratory acidosis in rats anaesthetized with fentanyl/fluanisone and midazolam. Twelve Sprague Dawley rats underwent surgery and were divided in two groups, breathing either 100% oxygen or atmospheric air during a post-operative period. The peripheral blood ox

Use of a trans-tracheal rapid insufflation of oxygen device in a "cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate" scenario in a parturient -a case report.

BACKGROUND: The trans-tracheal rapid insufflation of oxygen (TRIO) device is less commonly used and is an alternative to trans-tracheal jet ventilation for maintaining oxygenation in a "cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate" (CICO) scenario. CASE: We report the successful use of this device to maintain oxygenation after jet ventilator failure in a parturient who presented with the CICO scenario during the procedure for excision of laryngeal papilloma. CONCLUSIONS: A stepwise approach to the airway plan and preparation for an event of failure is essential for good materno-fetal outcomes. The TRIO

Propofol-based sedation does not negatively influence oxygenator running time compared to midazolam in patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

OBJECTIVE: Patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are frequently in need for sedation. Use of propofol has been associated with impaired oxygenator function due to adsorption to the membrane as well as lipid load. The aim of our retrospective analysis was to compare two different sedation regimens containing either propofol or midazolam with respect to oxygenator running time. METHODS: Midazolam was used in 73 patients whereas propofol was used in 49 patients, respectively. In the propofol group, veno-arterial-extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was used predominantly (84%), while ve

Anthropogenically enhanced sediment oxygen demand creates mosaic of oxygen deficient zones in the Ganga River: Implications for river health.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) plays a major role in sustaining aquatic communities; its concentration and regulatory determinants are considered a key node predicting eutrophy, ecosystem health, and biogeochemical feedbacks. Here we report the status of dissolved oxygen deficit (DOD; hypoxia), and its mechanistic links with sediment oxygen demand (SOD) in the Ganga River. We conducted two independent but interlinked studies during summer low flows of three consecutive years (2016-2018) considering: 1) a 518 km middle segment of the Ganga River between Kanpur upstream and Varanasi downstream; and 2) tr

Is Supplemental Oxygen Needed in Cardiac Compression?-The Influence of Oxygen on Cerebral Perfusion in Severely Asphyxiated Neonates With Bradycardia or Cardiac Asystole.

Background: Previous studies have investigated hemodynamic recovery using 21% vs. 100% oxygen during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with chest compression (CC) in term infants. Animal studies indicate that systemic circulatory recovery is the same whether 21 or 100% oxygen is used during neonatal CPR. One of the main goals of resuscitation is to maintain cerebral oxygen delivery and prevent cerebral hypo- and hyperoxygenation. Oxygen delivery to the brain depends on cerebral hemodynamics, concentration of inhaled oxygen and blood oxygen content. The aim of this paper was to synthesize ava

Effect of oxygen on the non-photochemical quenching of vascular plants and potential oxygen deficiency in the stroma of PsbS-knock-out rice.

The excessive and harmful light energy absorbed by the photosystem (PS) II of higher plants is dissipated as heat through a protective mechanism termed non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of chlorophyll fluorescence. PsbS-knock-out (KO) mutants lack the trans-thylakoid proton gradient (ΔpH)-dependent part of NPQ. To elucidate the molecular mechanism of NPQ, we investigated its dependency on oxygen. The development of NPQ in wild-type (WT) rice under low-oxygen (LO) conditions was reduced to more than 50% of its original value. However, under high-oxygen (HO) conditions, the NPQ of both WT and Ps

Monitoring the Oxygen Reserve Index can contribute to the early detection of deterioration in blood oxygenation during one-lung ventilation.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxemia can occur during one-lung ventilation (OLV), but monitoring blood oxygenation using percutaneous oxygen saturation (SpO2) can be limited by detection latency, and SpO2 sometimes does not change during OLV. The Oxygen Reserve Index (ORi™) is a novel index reported to detect impending desaturation before this is observed with SpO2 monitoring. This study assessed whether the ORi decreased earlier than SpO2 during OLV and evaluated its correlation with the partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) during OLV. METHODS: The study enrolled 15 patients undergoing elective thora
