Central retinal vein occlusion in a case of arteriovenous communication of the retina.

A case of isolated arteriovenous communication of the retina (AVCR) decompensated to central retinal vein occlusion and visual loss resulted. This decompensation is not rare. Therefore, photocoagulation of the shunting vessels has to be the preferred treatment.

The differential effects of GABA-transaminase inactivation in the chick retina and brain.

The inactivation of gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA)-transaminase by the highly specific and potent neurotoxin gabaculine leads to different neurochemical consequences in the chick brain as opposed to the chick retina. In the brain, GABA levels continually climb, reaching approximately eightfold increases over control values after 24 h. The elevation in GABA levels leads to a time-dependent and coincident fall in glutamate decarboxylase and cysteine-sulfinate decarboxylase activities, to approximately 50% of control values. On the other hand, in the retina GABA levels only increase to a plateau leve…

Macular and paramacular detachment of the neurosensory retina associated with systemic diseases.

We have reviewed 168 cases of angiographically proved SRD of the macular region of unknown etiology that were seen at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Thirty-seven percent of these patients had documented coincident systemic diseases. Of that group, patients with autoimmune disease appeared to have ocular symptoms during the active phase of the systemic illness. Nine cases are reported characterizing the coincidence of exacerbation of systemic disease with recurrent serous detachment of the neurosensory retina. It is our hypothesis that in patients with autoimmune disease, the choroiditis is s…

Development and degeneration of retina in rds mutant mice: light microscopy.

Changes during the development and degeneration of the retina in 020/A mice, which are homozygous for the newly reported rds (retinal degeneration slow), gene were studied by histological and enzyme-histochemical methods with Balb/c mice carrying the normal allele as control. During normal development the total thickness of the retina grows from the time of birth till the age of 21 days and thereafter gradually diminishes, while the thicknesses of the component layers show a characteristic and differential change in course of their histogenesis. In the normal retina the perikarya of the cones …

Vitamin E deficiency and the retina: photoreceptor and pigment epithelial changes.

To investigate the role of normal vitamin E levels and the interrelationships between vitamin E and A in maintaining the visual cells of the retina, weanling female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed vitamin E-free diets differing tenfold in their vitamin A content (0.8 and 8.0 mg of retinol per kilogram of diet). Rats on vitamin E-free diets with the higher vitamin A level exhibited marked disruption of photoreceptor outer segment membranes and a fivefold increase in the number of lipofuscin granules in the pigment epithelial cells which ingest these membranes. Rats on vitamin E-free diets with the…

Ultrastructural observations on the retina in type II glycogenosis (Pompe's disease).

The retina of a 9-month-old boy afflicted with biochemically proven type II glycogenosis contained abundant lysosomal glycogen. This was present in almost every cell type and occasionally associated with lipofuscin in choroidal macrophages. Lysosomal glycogen was absent from melanocytes and pigment epithelial cells. No degeneration of any cell layer was noted. The ubiquitous accretion of lysosomal glycogen resembles the widespread distribution of lipopigments in canine neural ceroid lipofuscinosis, another lysosomal disorder.

Ionic effects on the membrane potential of hyperpolarizing photoreceptors in scallop retina.

1. The effects of different external ionic conditions and of metabolic inhibitors on the membrane potential of hyperpolarizing photoreceptors in the retina of the scallop Pecten irradians were examined in the presence and absence of light.2. Changes in extracellular K(+) have a greater effect on membrane potential in the light than in darkness. The receptor potential is increased in amplitude when [K](o) is reduced and decreased when [K](o) is elevated. It is hyperpolarizing when [K](o) is less than the estimated value for [K](i) and depolarizing when this condition is reversed.3. The complete…

Differential effect of the rd mutation on rods and cones in the mouse retina.

The retinas of rd/rd C57BL/6J-rd le mice have been examined by light and electron microscopy to determine whether rod cell degeneration precedes cone cell degeneration. In all regions of the eye, a rapid rod degeneration precedes a much slower cone degeneration. Only about 2% of the rods remain in the posterior region at postnatal day 17, and none by the day 36. By contrast, at least 75% of the cone nuclei remain at day 17. Although most of these slowly disappear, about 1.5% of the original population of cone nuclei in the posterior retina is still present at 18 months of age. A central to per…

[Alterations of the fundus in the sense of a "flecked retina" in onchocerciasis (author's transl)].

Onchocerciasis is one of the main reasons of blindness in aequatorial Africa. In 50 patients suffering from onchocerciasis fluoangiograms of the eye fundus have been studied. After the treatment of onchocerciasis we often found changes similar to those of a "flecked retina". The angiographic observations demonstrated that the alterations are to be localised into the pigmented epithelium of the retina. Furthermore these alterations which are similar to a "retinitis punctata albescens" are interpreted as the result of a antigen-antibody reaction of the uveal tract. This reaction is due to delibe…

Tears of the peripheral retina; pathogenesis, incidence and classification in autopsy eyes.

A pathogenic analysis of full-thickness tears of the peripheral retina and their incidence in autopsy eyes is presented. Tears were classified according to their location (ora or postora, quadrant and zone), type of traction (zonuloretinal or vitreoretinal), morphological features (flap or operculum), presence or absence of posterior vitreous detachment, and their association with other ocular lesions. Tears were present in 2% of eyes. They were postoral in 92%, uniformly distributed in the quadrants, in the equatorial zone in 95%, related to vitreoretinal traction in 94%, of the flap type in …

Brisk and sluggish concentrically organized ganglion cells in the cat's retina.

1. Nine hundred and sixty cat retinal ganglion cells were evaluated with respect to receptive-field organization and latency to antidromic activation of their axons from optic-tract and mid-brain positions.2. The vast majority (92%) had the familiar concentric centre/surround organization. As in earlier work these could be classed as sustained or transient, independently of the centre type. About 13% of the concentric cells were characterized by relatively sluggish responses to conventional visual stimuli which yielded brisk responses from the others. The sluggish cells constituted a previousl…
