Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) suffer from an increased cardiovascular (CV) risk. The evidence for increased atherosclerotic disease is nowadays convincing, while the precise contribution of the so-called AS-specific (related) cardiac manifestations toward the increased CV risk still needs to be determined. OBJECTIVES: To explore the perceived causes, consequences and management of fatigue in ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
METHODS: In this single-cohort qualitative study, ten participants completed a seven-day diary and participated in a semi-structured interview exploring possible causes, consequences and self-management of fatigue. A 63-year-old man with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) presented with persistent pain in his back after minor trauma. Radiographs revealed no acute pathology. Six weeks later an MRI scan was performed which showed a vertebral fracture at level Tiii with kyphotic deformity. Ankylosing spondylitis is the most common spondyloarthropathy. It is characterized by enthesopathy (inflammation at the insertion of ligaments, tendons or fascia to bone). Case 1 was a 46-year-old man who developed neck pain in addition to pain and swelling in the limb joints in 1975. Pleuropulmonary involvement is an uncommon event in the course of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Apical fibrosis, interstitial infiltrates, and pleural thickening were considered to be the main patterns. However, the presence of cavity is very rare in AS. HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 33-year-old woman with increasing back pain was referred to our hospital 8 years ago. As she had ankylosing sacroilitis and peripheral arthritis she was diagnosed as having ankolysing spondylitis with involvement of the peripheral joints. OBJECTIVE: We quantified the total excretion of the collagen crosslinks (CL) pyridinoline (PYD) and deoxypyridinoline (DPD) in 108 ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients (29 f, 79 m) in correlation to different characteristics of disease to evaluate different mechanism contributing to development of osteoporosis in AS.

We report the first case of multifocal Scedosporium apiospermum spondylitis in a cystic fibrosis patient. The infection, which occurred during voriconazole prophylaxis, disseminated contiguously from the base of the left lung and pleura and spread to vertebrae via the epidural space. S. apiospermum osteoarticular infections are rare, and are difficult to diagnose and cure because of their resistance to anti-fungal drugs.

AIM: To study efficacy and tolerance of 1-3-day intravenous therapy with high dose glucocorticoids in patients with active ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Methylprednisolone (MP, n = 33) and dexamethason (DM, n = 13) were given to 46 patients with active AS (median BASDAI 47; coxitis was in 37 patients, arthritis of other peripheral joints--in 30 patients). MP and DM were given as 1-3 intravenous infusions, in single doses equivalent to 500-1000 mg of MP. Total doses were 500-3000 mgfor MP and 120-360 mg for DM. Intervals between the infusions were from I to 8 days.

BACKGROUND: Spine fractures in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) are extremely unstable and associated with a high complication rate. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the therapy and complications of these fractures in AS for a better understanding and management.
