In a study of 525 dry mandibles and dissections in 50 cadavers, the mental foramen (MF) was found: single in 94.67% of the cases and multiple in 5.33%. Its shape was round in 34.48% with an average diameter of 1.68 mm and oval in 65.52% with an average long diameter of 2.37 mm. In 43.66% the MF was located in front of the apex of the root of the second premolar. In children before tooth eruption, the MF is somewhat closer to the alveolar margin; during the eruption period, the MF descends to half way between the margins, and in adults with the teeth preserved, the MF is somewhat closer to the

Immediate implants are positioned in the course of surgical extraction of the tooth to be replaced. The percentage success of such procedures varies among authors from 92.7-98.0%. The main indication of immediate implantation is the replacement of teeth with pathologies not amenable to treatment. Its advantages with respect to delayed implantation include reduced post-extraction alveolar bone resorption, a shortening of the rehabilitation treatment time, and the avoidance of a second surgical intervention. The inconveniences in turn comprise a general requirement for membrane-guided bone regen

We investigated which structural components are responsible for maintaining interstitial fluid equilibrium in the pulpal tissue, for which the existence of an effective lymph drainage is postulated. There have been only a small number of investigations on pulpal lymph tissue. Therefore, we decided to perform a detailed structural analysis. Twenty vital, healthy teeth that had to be extracted for orthodontic reasons were immersed in Patent Blue for 10 to 15 minutes after opening the pulpal cavity. They were then extracted and the dental pulps were opened by cleavage of the surrounding hard toot

INTRODUCTION: Stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) possess strong odonto/osteogenic differentiation potential. This study investigated the effect of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) on odonto/osteogenic differentiation of SCAPs and the underlining interplay between cAMP and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1).
METHODS: SCAPs were stimulated with an activator of cAMP (forskolin) in the presence of either TGF-β1 or a TGF-β1 inhibitor. The amounts of calcium mineral deposition and alkaline phosphatase activity were determined. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction wa

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is most commonly used as an irrigating solution in endodontic practice. This paper describes an incident of sodium hypochlorite extrusion past the apex (SHEPA) of the UR3. Management of the condition resulted in hospitalisation of the patient, and intravenous antibiotic and steroid therapy. This case report details the measures that can be employed to reduce the risk of SHEPA and management of its potentially serious complications. The reader should understand the various measures that can be adopted to reduce extrusion of endodontic irrigants beyond the root apex a

A longitudinal outcome study was designed to identify variables that influenced tooth survival as well as pulpal and periodontal outcomes of laterally luxated permanent maxillary incisors of children and adolescents. All cases were treated between June 1988 and June 1998 in a teaching hospital clinic. Clinical and radiographic data were collected for 42 patients (26 males, 16 females) that represented 58 permanent maxillary incisors. Mean age at the time of injury was 11.4 years (range: 6.3-17.8 years). Mean follow-up time was 1460 days (range: 183-3905 days). In the entire sample (n = 58), no

Bone resorption after tooth extraction can compromise alveolar ridge volume and limit implant-supported rehabilitation. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) using xenografts and resorbable collagen membranes has been proposed to reduce post-extraction dimensional changes; however, outcomes may vary depending on site characteristics and clinical conditions. The objective of this clinical case was to evaluate multidimensional ridge changes following alveolar preservation using a porcine pericardium collagen membrane and bovine bone xenograft prior to implant placement, assessed by cone beam compute

Background: Adult patients with a thin buccal cortical plate and fragile periodontal phenotype are at high risk of dehiscence, fenestration and recession during transverse orthodontic expansion. Conventional mechanics often create a cervical compression-dominant environment that exceeds the adaptive capacity of the periodontal ligament (PDL)-bone complex. Objectives: This study proposes an integrative mechanobiological model in which a skeletal-anchorage-assisted loading protocol (Bone Protection System, BPS) transforms expansion into a tension-dominant regime that favours buccal phenotype pre

INTRODUCTION: External apical root resorption (EARR) is an undesirable loss of hard tissues of the tooth root frequently affecting to the maxillary incisors. The magnitude of orthodontic forces is a major treatment-related factor associated with EARR occurrence in orthodontics. The primary aim of the present randomized clinical trial was (i) to quantify the impact of a sequence of personalized force archwires on EARR compared to the conventional standard of care and (ii) compare the 3D-quantification of EARR using two quantification methods (manual or automated AI-aided segmentation).
