The association between atrial fibrillation (AF) and thromboembolic (TE) complications in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients is controversial, and there is paucity of large-scale data evaluating the impact of AF on early outcomes after device implantation. AIMS: High serum phosphate is linked to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the general population. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) is a critical phosphate regulating hormone, potentially reflecting phosphate load better than a single serum phosphate measurement. We describe the case of a neonate who underwent surgery for bowel obstruction. The child was born at 25 weeks postconception, and at the time of surgery, he had a postconceptual age of 44 weeks. To assess the potential improvement in left ventricular ejection fraction after cardioversion of chronic atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, we studied prospectively 17 patients, aged 58 +/- 6 years, by radionuclide angiocardiography at rest.
