Canine stifle positive contrast computed tomography arthrography for assessment of caudal horn meniscal injury: a cadaver study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of computed tomography (CT) arthrography in cadaveric canine stifles with particular emphasis on the diagnosis of meniscal injury. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cadaver study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Pelvic limbs from adult Beagles (n=10). METHODS: After survey CT scan of each stifle oriented in the dorsal plane, positive contrast stifle CT arthrogram (CTA) was performed using the same slice orientation. Each stifle was then randomly allocated into 1 of 2 treatment groups: group A--arthrotomy, cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) transection and simulated injury to the c…

Kirschner wire placement in scaphoid bones using fluoroscopic navigation: a cadaver study comparing conventional techniques with navigation.

BACKGROUND: During scaphoid fixation, a pin guide is first inserted along the axis of the scaphoid, and then a cannulated screw is inserted around the pin guide. At least, the pinguide is removed. To verify the position of the pin guide, fluoroscopy is typically used, with the disadvantage of irradiation. Thus, it is impossible to visualize the pin guide in more than one view simultaneously. The goal of this study was to compare two pin guide placement techniques in scaphoid fixation: conventional (CF) vs. fluoroscopic navigation (FN). METHODS: Eleven upper limbs of cadavers were divided into…

Repair of large supraspinatus rotator-cuff defects by infraspinatus and subscapularis tendon transfers in a cadaver model.

Transosseous repair of a supraspinatus tendon (SSP) defect (Patte size II) can be difficult if the tendon is retracted and the muscle atrophied. In this situation alternatives are margin convergence techniques, local tendon transfers or distant tendon transfers in massive tears. The object of this study was to compare two local tendon transfers in terms of the feasibility of the shift, the area covered by the shift and the force needed to accomplish the shift. Thirteen fresh-frozen cadaver shoulders were used. First a supraspinatus defect extending to the apex of the humeral head (Patte size I…

A critical approach to the current understanding of Islamic scholars on using cadaver organs without prior permission.

Chronic organ diseases and the increasing demand for organ transplantation have become an important health care problem within the last few … ng it in any circumstances. Both groups agree that is is fundamentally wrong to harvest organs from cadavers without prior permission of the deceased or the relatives. This dogma is re-examined, and it is argued that, under the rule of necessity and the imperative to preserve life, there is enough moral and theological ground to allow the state to harvest …

The miniarthrotomy technique of ankle arthrodesis: a cadaver study of operative vascular compromise and early clinical results.

We present a two-part study of the miniarthrotomy ankle fusion technique for minimally deformed joints: a laboratory investigation of ankle vascularity and a clinical review of the early results. In the laboratory portion, five pairs of cadaver legs were injected with radiographic dye, after which arthrodesis was performed via either the open technique (one leg of each pair) or the miniarthrotomy technique (the contralateral leg of each pair). Two legs in the open arthrodesis group had disruption of the peroneal arterial circulation, but no disruption was identified in the miniarthrotomy group…

Correlations between anatomic and MRI sections of human cadaver temporomandibular joints in the coronal and sagittal planes.

Cadaver material was used in this study to correlate sequential sagittal and coronal T1-weighted magnetic resonance images against anatomic detail. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was found to accurately represent soft tissues in normal and deranged joints. In contrast to previous reports, MRI was found to accurately represent the discal-retrodiscal junction and did not appear to give false positive findings for disc displacement. Magnetic resonance imaging provided good images of bony outline, particularly in coronal views. Difficulties in interpretation arose when different adjoining tissue…

Prednisone withdrawal in HLA identical and one haplotype-matched live-related donor and cadaver renal transplant recipients.

Prednisone withdrawal was attempted in 121 of 915 renal transplants recipients between 1967 to 1992. There were 57 males, 64 females. Age range was 21 to 62 (mean 39.2 years). Etiology of renal failure was chronic glomerulonephritis (54), diabetic nephropathy (36), interstitial disease (17), hypertensive nephrosclerosis (6), and other (8). Kidney source was from HLA-identical living-related donors (LRD) in 54 (Group I), one haplotype-matched LRD in 23 (Group II), and cadaver in 44 (Group III). Prior to the introduction of cyclosporin A (CsA) in 1984, prednisone withdrawal was attempted only in…

Multivariate analysis of risk factors impacting on immediate and eventual cadaver allograft survival in cyclosporine-treated recipients.

A multivariate analysis dissected the impact of donor procurement variables, immunologic risk factors, and alternate cyclosporine and prednisone induction immunosuppressive regimens on the early and eventual function of 303 consecutive cadaveric renal allografts. Primarily warm, but to a slight extent cold, ischemia time had an adverse impact on allograft function, as did the requirement for vasopressor or diuretic therapy. The occurrence of initial graft non-function adversely affected the probability of three-month graft survival, but did not alter either the longevity of organs, which subse…

The effect of HLA-A, -B matching on cadaver renal allograft rejection comparing public and private specificities.

Data collected prospectively on 3811 cadaver renal transplants performed between June 1977 and July 1982 by the 42 member institutions of the South-Eastern Organ Procurement Foundation (SEOPF) were analyzed to determine whether donor-recipient compatibility based on public rather than private HLA-A,-B specificities influenced the beneficial effect of HLA matching on outcome. HLA compatibility was calculated considering match and mismatch based on common private or various public (crossreactive group, [CREG]) specificities. Donor-recipient compatibility using certain CREG assignments provided a…

From cadavers to virtual reality: a carbon footprint analysis of surgical simulation for lumbar spine surgery.

BACKGROUND: Simulation plays a fundamental role in lumbar spine surgery training. While many studies focus on the carbon footprint of surgeries, limited information is available on the environmental impact of surgical training. Today, surgical simulators can be categorized into three groups: biological specimens (cadavers and animal models), synthetic physical simulators (bench-top models, 3D-printed, high-fidelity models), and virtual simulators (screen-based and Virtual Reality (VR) simulators). This study analyzed the carbon footprint of the main simulators available for lumbar spine surger…

Velocity-Dependent Stress Changes in the Hamstring Muscle-Tendon Complex: A Study Using Human Cadavers.

Hamstring strain injuries frequently occur during high-speed running, when muscle tension is markedly increased. Given the viscoelastic properties of muscle, stress during elongation is expected to be velocity-dependent. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of elongation velocity on the stress in individual hamstring muscles. Seven Thiel-embalmed cadaveric lower limbs were used to isolate the biceps femoris long head, semimembranosus, and semitendinosus muscles. Specimens were fixed to a testing apparatus and passively elongated to 10% strain at five elongation velocities (20-300 mm/m…

Needle bevel orientation does not affect the cranial spread of injectate in a lumbosacral epidural in canine cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cranial and circumferential spread of iohexol (240 mg/mL) diluted 1:3 with saline injected at the lumbosacral junction in canine cadavers using 0.1- and 0.2-mL/kg volumes administered with a cranial- or caudal-facing Tuohy bevel direction. METHODS: Lumbosacral epidurals were performed with a cranial- or caudal-facing needle bevel. The median vertebrae reached and the estimated percentage of the spinal cord surrounded with injectate were assessed via CT after administering two 0.1-mL/kg aliquots of injectate. Contrast medium was diluted to achieve physical propert…

Do Asymmetric Faces Harbor Asymmetric Roots? A Morphologic Study of Mandibular Premolars in Human Cadavers.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular first premolars exhibit notable anatomic variability, particularly in root canal morphology. Simultaneously, asymmetries between facial and dental midlines are frequently observed but rarely examined in relation to internal tooth structure. This study aimed to investigate whether midline-based anatomic asymmetry is correlated with root canal morphology. METHODS: Ten fixed cadaveric heads (6 female, 4 male) were examined. Intraoral measurements were taken using digital calipers to quantify asymmetry based on distances from mandibular premolars to facial and dental midlin…

Rare variation of the branches of the coeliac trunk and the common hepatic artery in human cadaver: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The liver with its dual blood supply from the portal vein and the common hepatic artery (CHA) is unique among parenchymal organs. CHA accounts for around 30% of blood flow to the liver but has a central role in hepatobiliary perfusion. CASE PRESENTATION: We demonstrated a rare case of unusual branching of the CHA during routine dissection of an embalmed female cadaver. Measurements of the diameter and distance of origin of the branches were performed. The coeliac trunk presented with five branches - left gastric, splenic, CHA, right inferior phrenic, and accessory left hepatic art…

Finding the Truth: Cadaver and CT scan Study of Differences in Glenoid Width Size in the Indian Population.

INTRODUCTION: Glenoid mass issues have been extensively published in the recent literature. The controversy arose from our need to compare and obtain the appropriate implant size for reverse shoulder arthroplasty patients. Some well-known authors and surgeons say that Indian patients have a smaller glenoid than their Western friends and patients. Therefore, we decided to examine the glenoid size obtained on a computed tomography (CT) scan and the size obtained on a cadaver, preferably the same cadaver in tertiary care medical school. Necessary permissions were obtained from the relatives of th…

Somatic and autonomic nerve density and distribution within the clitoris: an immunohistochemical study in adult female cadavers.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Knowledge of clitoral neuroanatomy is critical to vulvar surgery. We sought to characterize the density and distribution of autonomic and somatic nerves supplying the clitoris. METHODS: Pelvic tissue harvested from female cadavers was sectioned axially at three anatomic levels: the proximal aspect of the clitoral body (CB), the distal CB, and the glans. The CB, glans, and the surrounding connective tissue (dorsal, lateral, and ventral) were outlined microscopically. An area containing large nerve bundles dorsal to the CB, referred to as the dorsal nerve subregion,…
