'Surgiceloma' manifested as cauda equina syndrome.

A 28-year-old man needed urgent decompression because of development of cauda equina syndrome 36 hours after an operation for disk degeneration and spinal stenosis. At reexploration, swollen blood-soaked Surgicel (a hemostatic agent) was found to be the only cause of compression. Six months after the operation, the patient was able to work full time.

Effectiveness of collagen/oxidised regenerated cellulose/silver-containing composite wound dressing for the treatment of medium-depth split-thickness skin graft donor site wounds in multi-morbid patients: a prospective, non-comparative, single-centre study.

Split-thickness skin grafting (STSG) is a widely used method in reconstructive surgery, but donor site wounds (DSWs) are often slow healing and painful. This prospective study evaluated the performance of a composite wound dressing containing collagen/oxidised regenerated cellulose in the treatment of medium-depth (0·4 mm) DSWs in 25 multi-morbid patients with chronic leg ulcers requiring STSG. The range of patients' ages was 44-84 years (mean 71·6 years) with DSW sizes ranging between 12 and 162 cm2 (mean 78 cm2 ). Comorbidities included anticoagulation therapy (15 patients), anaemia (11 pati

Novel biodegradable powder for preventing postoperative pleural adhesion.

OBJECTIVES: Progress in medical technology and improvements in prognosis have led to an increase in polysurgery. However, postoperative pleural adhesion leads to poor visualization, bleeding, and lung and vascular trauma during subsequent surgeries. To date, there have been no appropriate anti-adhesive agents to prevent pleural adhesion. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-adhesive effects of commercially available anti-adhesive agents and a newly developed powder-type anti-adhesive agent. METHODS: In 48 male rats, we performed thoracotomy at the fifth intercostal space. We rand

Monitoring and preventing blood flow insufficiency due to clip rotation after the treatment of internal carotid artery aneurysms.

The authors report a case in which anterior choroidal artery (AChA) blood flow insufficiency due to aneurysm clip rotation was detected intraoperatively by motor evoked potential (MEP) monitoring and ischemia was successfully avoided. The patient had an incidentally discovered aneurysm for which occlusion of its neck was performed through a standard frontotemporal craniotomy without changing the MEP amplitude. After it was confirmed that the surrounding arteries were not stenotic, the brain retractor on the frontal lobe was released; MEP amplitude subsequently decreased. Rotation of the clip t

Incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leak after microsurgical removal of vestibular schwannomas.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak still remains an unresolved problem after microsurgical removal of vestibular schwannomas (VS). METHODS: 14 (6%) Cases of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and 3 cases with subcutaneous retro-auricular CSF collection, occurring in a series of 224 patients operated on by the senior author (JMG) on VS between 1989-2000 via the suboccipital retrosigmoidal approach were studied retrospectively. Prophylaxis of CSF leak was usually attempted by packing the unroofed posterior wall of internal acoustic meatus with muscle. The mastoid air cells were packed first

Muslin induced granuloma following wrapping of intracranial aneurysms: the role of infection as an additional precipitating factor. Report of two cases and review of the literature.

Two patients who developed what appeared to be a granulomatous reaction following muslin wrapping of unclipped aneurysms are reported. They presented with cranial nerve palsies and at operation were found to have an abscess around the wrapped aneurysms. In one of these two patients Staphylococcus epidemidis was isolated from the pus. This, together with further evidence from reported cases in the literature, would suggest that infection may play an additional role at least in some cases in the onset of a foreign-body granulomatous reaction seen following wrapping of aneurysms.

Characterization of the reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-nitrate reductase of Aspergillus nidulans.

The reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-nitrate oxidoreductase (EC 1.6.6.2) from Aspergillus nidulans was purified over 200-fold by use of salt fractionation, gel filtration, and ion-exchange chromatography. The purified enzyme was specific for NADPH and catalyzed reduction of nitrate, cytochrome c from isolated mitochondria of Aspergillus, and mammalian cytochrome c. An S(0.725) (20, w) of 7.8 was derived with sucrose density gradient centrifugation, and a Stokes radius of 6.4 nm was derived by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200. From these values, a molecular weight of

A multifunctional injectable, adhesive and self-healing carboxymethyl cellulose/alginate hydrogel reinforced with clove oil-caseinate nanoparticles for diabetic wound healing.

Diabetic wound healing is frequently impaired by a persistently inflammatory wound microenvironment accompanied by impaired angiogenesis. Therefore, fabrication of advanced wound dressings to restore a favorable wound microenvironment is essential to accelerate the healing process. This study developed a carboxymethyl cellulose/sodium alginate (CMC/ALG) hydrogel reinforced with clove oil-loaded sodium caseinate nanoparticle (CO-CAS NPs) as a wound dressing with multifunctional properties for diabetic wound repair. Clove oil was extracted by hydro-distillation and characterized by GC-MS, reveal

A dual-function rebamipide cubogel for enhanced ocular penetration and tear film restoration: optimization, safety, and in-vivo evaluation.

Dry eye disease is a troublesome multifactorial ocular condition, affecting 5-50% of the population. Rebamipide is a mucin secretagogue with anti-inflammatory properties used for dry eye management, however, its efficacy is limited due to its poor aqueous solubility and low tissue permeation. This study aimed to formulate and optimize rebamipide-loaded cubosomes incorporated into a carboxymethyl cellulose gel to achieve a dual action of sustained drug release and enhanced corneal penetration. The proposed cubosomes were prepared via hot melt emulsification technique and optimized applying a 33

Polysaccharide-based hydrogels for alveolar socket healing: biological functions and material design strategies.

Tooth extraction sockets undergo a tightly regulated sequence of hemostasis, inflammation, angiogenesis and bone remodeling within a confined bony cavity that is directly exposed to the oral environment. Conventional socket dressings mainly act as passive fillers or barriers and provide little control over the local immune and regenerative microenvironment. Polysaccharide based hydrogels, derived from chitosan, hyaluronic acid, alginate, cellulose and related macromolecules, offer a structurally tunable platform in which macromolecular parameters and network architecture can be engineered to m

Chemical Modification of Cellulose Fibers for Sustainable Food Packaging: Structure-Property-Sustainability Relationships.

Cellulose fibers offer renewable sourcing and an established recycling infrastructure for food packaging applications. Their hydroxyl groups bind water strongly, which causes dimensional instability and compromises barrier performance at elevated humidity. Chemical modification targets this limitation through controlled changes to hydroxyl reactivity, surface charge, and interfiber hydrogen bonding. This review covers four principal covalent modification routes: esterification, etherification, phosphorylation, and oxidative functionalization. The spatial localization of functional groups-surfa

Comparing capillary coatings for protein separation by capillary electrophoresis.

For intact protein separation by capillary electrophoresis, the application of a proper capillary coating is crucial to achieve high separation efficiencies. There are a large number of different capillary coatings and coating protocols, making it crucial to compare the coating performances in identical experimental conditions for intact protein separations. Here, the plate height vs. migration velocity was systematically plotted by doing electrophoretic experiments at different electric voltages, on five model proteins. For the first time, this study allows comparing the performances of seven

Metal-phenolic network-stabilized resveratrol nanoparticles as antimicrobial platforms for fresh pork preservation.

In this study, metal-phenolic network stabilized resveratrol (RES) nanoparticles are prepared via coordination-driven self-assembly between tannic acid (TA) and ferric ions (Fe3+) to enhance the stability and functionality of RES. The nanoparticles exhibit a uniform particle size (132.17 ± 2.38 nm), narrow size distribution (PDI 0.29 ± 0.02), good colloidal stability, and pH-responsive sustained-release behavior, along with high encapsulation efficiency (93.09 ± 0.59%) and loading efficiency (67.74 ± 1.47%). Antibacterial assays demonstrate that RES@TA-Fe nanoparticles display enhanced inhibit

Excipient nitrite levels are not static material attributes: Nitrite generation from environmental NOx and implications for drug product manufacturing.

Nitrites in pharmaceutical excipients are a known critical factor for the formation of nitrosamine impurities. The origin and variability of nitrite levels are, however, not yet fully understood. In this study, we investigated the formation and uptake of nitrite in a broad panel of common excipients under controlled exposure to nitrogen oxides (NOx). Our data show that most tested excipients are susceptible to NOx-driven nitrite accumulation, an effect mediated via hydrolysis and disproportionation mechanism. Substantial differences in nitrite accumulation were observed among excipients, gover

Redox- and Photo-Responsive Fe3+/2+-Cross-Linked Carboxymethyl Cellulose Methacrylate Dissipative Gels: Synthesis and Applications.

The synthesis of redox-active Fe3+-cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose methacrylate cryogels (Fe3+-CMCMA), revealing switchable, transient, dissipative stiffness properties, is introduced. The switchable, transient functions are triggered by ascorbate-mediated reduction of the high-stiffness gel to the lower-stiffness Fe2+-CMCMA gel, and the concomitant aerobic oxidation of the Fe2+-CMCMA to the Fe3+-CMCMA gel state. Alternatively, integration of native photosynthetic photosystem-I (PS-I) into the cryogel matrix allows the photosensitized reduction of the Fe3+-CMCMA cryogel to the lower stiff
