Asymmetric ventriculomegaly, interhemispheric cyst, and dysgenesis of the corpus callosum (AVID): an imaging triad.

A series of 20 cases from 2 academic institutions is presented with a characteristic imaging triad of asymmetric ventriculomegaly, a large interhemispheric cyst, and partial or complete agenesis of the corpus callosum. Most cases were initially referred as aqueduct stenosis and hydrocephalus or focal porencephaly. We describe the imaging findings that identify an abnormal or absent corpus callosum associated with a type 1 interhemispheric cyst in fetuses initially thought to have hydrocephalus attributable to aqueductal stenosis. We suggest that the acronym AVID (asymmetric ventriculomegaly, i…

Detecting the shape differences of the corpus callosum in Behçet's disease by statistical shape analysis.

The aim of this study was to assess the shape differences of the corpus callosum (CC) in patients with Behçet's disease using statistical shape analysis (SSA). Additionally, an attempt was made to investigate the changes in CC size according to disease duration. Twenty-five adults with clinically diagnosed Behçet's disease and 25 age- and gender-matched controls were examined by high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging. The data obtained from the coordinate of landmarks were analyzed with Euclidean distance matrix analysis and a thin-plate spline analysis. SSA and growth curve mod…

Demyelination and remyelination in anatomically distinct regions of the corpus callosum following cuprizone intoxication.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Spontaneous remyelination during early disease stages is thought to preserve and partially restore function. However, this process ceases in later stages despite the presence of pre-oligodendrocytes. Cuprizone-induced demyelination is a useful model with which to study the remyelination process. Previous studies have demonstrated heterogeneities in demyelination in individual animals. Here we investigated regional differences in demyelination and remyelination within the corpus callosum. C57BL/6 mice were fed …

[Agenesis of the corpus callosum: Cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms in children and adolescents--a case report].

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is associated with a wide range of neuropsychiatric symptoms. Cranial MRI confirms the diagnosis. We report a case of a 13-year-old boy with global developmental delay, mental retardation as well as neurological and psychiatric symptoms but without symptoms of ADHD who is unable to cope with school demands. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a relatively rare, but possibly underestimated differential diagnosis of unclear retardations in development in children or suspicion of ADHD respectively.

A novel locus on proximal chromosome 18 associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum in mice.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a congenital abnormality of the brain structure. We have produced transgenic mice expressing both reverse tetracycline-controlled transactivator (rtTA) and transcriptional silencer (tTS) ubiquitously. Although the transgene products do not affect development of the mouse brain, one of the founder lines, TAS, showed ACC, suggesting transgenic disruption of endogenous gene(s). To identify the causative gene and its role in ACC, we performed pathological investigations of the brain and chromosomal mapping of foreign genes in TAS mice. Sixty-two percent of …

A correlative light and electron microscopic study of postnatal myelination in the murine corpus callosum.

Oligodendroglial cells differ in their ultrastructural appearance depending on their myelin producing and maintaining activity. To better understand the relationship between light and electron microscopic features of myelination, myelin formation in the corpus callosum was studied in young postnatal mice. Immunostaining for myelin basic protein (MBP), which has an important role in myelin compaction, was compared with conventional Luxol Fast Blue myelin staining and with electron microscopic images of unlabeled tissue. MBP-immunostaining labeled a few oligodendroglial cells at postnatal day (P…

Novel mutations of the SPG11 gene in hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum (HSP-TCC) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder with genetic linkage to multi-loci. Recently pathogenic mutations in the KIAA1840 (now named SPG11) for SPG11, the major HSP-TCC locus, were identified; at least 42 different mutations have been detected. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features and identify the SPG11 gene mutations in Chinese patients with HSP-TCC. METHODS: Three kindreds with an autosomal recessive HSP-TCC and 5 cases with sporadic HSP-TCC in Chinese Hans were recruited. De…

A patient with the syndrome of megalencephaly, mega corpus callosum and complete lack of motor development.

The syndrome of megalencephaly, mega corpus callosum and complete lack of motor development (MCC; OMIM 603387) is an apparently rare condition since only three sporadic cases have been reported [Gohlich-Ratmann et al. (1998); Am J Med Genet 79:161-167]. We describe an additional case that was not diagnosed until age 15 months. The MRI showed generalized, severe enlargement of the corpus callosum and thickening of the cortex. The cause for the MCC syndrome is unknown and both autosomal recessive and spontaneous dominant genetic mechanisms are possibilities.

Evaluation of shape-based normalization in the corpus callosum for white matter connectivity analysis.

Recently, concerns have been raised that the correspondences computed by volumetric registration within homogeneous structures are primarily driven by regularization priors that differ among algorithms. This paper explores the correspondence based on geometric models for one of those structures, midsagittal section of the corpus callosum (MSCC), and compared the result with registration paradigms. We use geometric model called continuous medial representation (cm-rep) to normalize anatomical structures on the basis of medial geometry, and use features derived from diffusion tensor tractography…

Interhemispheric multiloculated ependymal cyst with dysgenesis of the corpus callosum: a case in a preterm fetus.

INTRODUCTION: The authors report a case of interhemispheric ependymal cyst accompanied with agenesis of the corpus callosum in a fetus. DISCUSSION: Routine ultrasound and subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of a 20-year-old woman at 33 weeks and 1 day of gestation detected a large interhemispheric cystic lesion in the fetal cranial cavity. Caesarian section was carried out at 36 weeks because of the progressive enlargement of the fetal head. The cyst was multiloculated and a cyst peritoneal shunt placement resulted in collapse of the drained cyst components followed by enlargement of others…

Focal transient lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum in three non-epileptic patients.

INTRODUCTION: We analyzed the imaging features of transient focal lesions in the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) in non-epileptic patients receiving antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). METHODS: We identified signal abnormalities in the SCC in three non-epileptic patients, all of them receiving AEDs. We examined two of these patients with multiplanar magnetic resonance (MR) imaging using 1.0-T equipment including fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), T2-weighted (TSE) and T1-weighted (SE) sequences before and after injection of contrast agent. The third patient was studied using 1.5-T equ…

Neuropsychological deficits associated with a tumour in the posterior corpus callosum: a report of two cases.

This study reports two patients with tumours arising from the splenium of the corpus callosum that caused a memory disturbance consistent with retrosplenial amnesia as well as a variety of cognitive deficits including agraphia, acalculia, constructional apraxia and ideomotor and ideational apraxia involving both hands, but not aphasia. Patients showed disorientation to time and place, impaired recent memory and memorizing capacity; immediate and remote memory were preserved. Despite impaired performance intelligence quotients (IQ), verbal IQ was relatively spared. Patients also showed disconne…

[Tumour of the corpus callosum: the association between interhemispheric disconnection and an anterograde amnesia syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Sperry, or interhemispheric disconnection, syndrome was reported in patients who had undergone surgical section of the corpus callosum carried out in an attempt to control medication-resistant epilepsy. It has occasionally been linked to tumours of the corpus callosum and, although even more rarely, it has also been associated to an amnesic syndrome. In this paper we report the anatomical and neuropsychological findings in a patient with interhemispheric disconnection syndrome associated to a hippocampal-type amnesic syndrome, caused by a tumour in the splenius of the corpus call…

Corpus callosum changes following shunting for hydrocephalus: case report and review of the literature.

Diffuse callosal signal changes can rarely occur following successful shunting for obstructive hydrocephalus. We report on a patient who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting for aqueductal stenosis and required two revisions for neurological deterioration and presumed shunt malfunction. Extensive changes involving the corpus callosum, periventricular white matter and optic chiasm were noted after the first, and were prominent after second shunt revision. Thus, post-shunting callosal changes may be associated with more extensive white matter disease, and may not imply wide pressure fluctuati…

Molecular screening of the ZFHX1B gene in prenatally diagnosed isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum.

OBJECTIVE: Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is the most common malformation of the central nervous system and may be associated with mental retardation. ACC is found in 40% of the cases of Mowat-Wilson syndrome (MWS), a polytopic embryonic defect including a distinctive facial gestalt, severe mental retardation, epilepsy and postnatal microcephaly as constant features. Other manifestations involve Hirschsprung disease, cardiac defects, renal abnormalities and hypospadias. Among this broad spectrum of malformations recently associated with haploinsufficiency of the zinc finger homeobox 1B …

Sister and brother with Vici syndrome: agenesis of the corpus callosum, albinism, and recurrent infections.

A sister and brother with Vici syndrome are described. They both had oculocutaneous albinism, agenesis of the corpus callosum, cataracts, and cardiomyopathy. They were born to healthy unrelated parents, and had postnatal growth retardation, profound developmental delay, hypotonia, and cataracts. The sister had recurrent infections, and died of progressive heart failure at age 19 months. The brother is alive at age six months with mild cardiomyopathy, and had a single episode of acute bronchitis at age three months. Review of the clinical manifestations of the sibs we described and six children…
