[Cockayne syndrome].

A 9-year-old girl with characteristic clinical signs of Cockayne's syndrome type I (cachectic dwarfism, "senile" like appearance, mental retardation, progressive neurologic and retinal degeneration) is presented. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain have shown a large malformation in cerebral posterior fossa. The case also has unusual aspects: pronounced congenital hypertrichosis and dark pigmented teeth. To our knowledge, these signs have never been described in the literature in connection with this rare syndrome.

Oral manifestations in growth hormone disorders.

Growth hormone is of vital importance for normal growth and development. Individuals with growth hormone deficiency develop pituitary dwarfism with disproportionate delayed growth of skull and facial skeleton giving them a small facial appearance for their age. Both hyper and hypopituitarism have a marked effect on development of oro-facial structures including eruption and shedding patterns of teeth, thus giving an opportunity to treating dental professionals to first see the signs and symptoms of these growth disorders and correctly diagnose the serious underlying disease.

Palatoplasty in a patient with Seckel syndrome.

We report a rare case of a patient of Seckel syndrome having cleft palate born to nonconsanguineous married parents. This 8-year-old male child underwent successful palatoplasty under general anesthesia. Till date there are approximately 60 cases of Seckel syndrome reported in the literature. The syndrome which has autosomal recessive inheritance is characterized by Intra Uterine Growth Retardation, microcephaly, dwarfism, and bird-like face. The associated features of the syndrome and technical details of surgery and anesthesia are discussed.

Severe prenatal growth retardation, dysmorphic features, pigmentary retinopathy, and generalized absence of subcutaneous tissues: a new entity?

We report a girl with severe prenatal and postnatal growth retardation, congenital generalized absence of subcutaneous tissue, and facial and somatic changes with some similarities to Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome (WRS). However, the patient's condition is sufficiently different from those reported previously to suggest that this patient represents a new syndrome. The abnormalities observed in this patient overlap with those of WRS, Cockayne syndrome, type A (CSA), and osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type III (OPD III), but also include choanal atresia and pigmentary retinopathy.

Fibrochondrogenesis in a 17-week fetus: a case expanding the phenotype.

Fibrochondrogenesis is a very rare form of lethal short-limb dwarfism, with 8 cases described since it was first reported in 1978. It is becoming clear that this condition has certain radiological and histological characteristics that distinguish it from other skeletal dysplasias. We herein present a further case of fibrochondrogenesis diagnosed in a fetus of 17 weeks, which is the youngest patient reported so far. In addition, the fetus showed severe micrognathia and a bifid tongue. These are not previously described manifestations, which extend the phenotype of this rare condition.

Kashin-Beck's disease.

A case of Kashin-Beck's disease is presented. It is an acquired, disabling, polyarthritic, degenerative condition of early onset, sometimes leading to a variable degree of dwarfism. It occurs endemically in certain Asian areas. Treatment is, if possible, preventive. In the established disease the therapy is that of any other form of secondary osteoarthritis. Reconstructive surgery and removal of loose bodies may be needed in severe cases (11). Early detection, facilitated by careful family history taking, is a prime requisite, especially in non-endemic areas (7).

[Silver-Russell syndrome with panhypopituitarism (author's transl)].

This is a report on a 14 years old boy suffering from the unusual combination of Silver-Russell syndrome with panhypopituitarism. The Silver-Russell syndrome is a special form of primordial dwarfism characterised by congenital asymmetry, craniofacial dysmorphy and other anomalies. Its cause is unknown, intrauterine noxes and genetical factors are discussed. In the most cases results of hormone determinations are normal, but also cases with elevated or very low hormone levels were published. This is the first report about a Silver-Russell syndrome combined with panhypopituitarism.

Neurological symptoms in achondroplastic dwarfs--surgical treatment.

Fourteen patients who had neurological symptoms associated with achondroplastic dwarfism and who had spine surgery were analyzed, as were an additional twenty-nine cases reported in the literature. Four types of neurological patterns emerged, based on the onset, symptoms, and physical examination. Some etiological correlation between the anatomical lesion and the result was made in each category, and a reliable prognosis related to the pattern is now possible. Early and appropriately extensive surgery may well be recommended, based on the patients treated.

Effects of gibberellin and strigolactone on rice tiller bud growth.

Strigolactones (SLs) regulate diverse developmental phenomena. Rice SL biosynthesis and signaling mutants have an increased number of tillers and a reduced plant height relative to wild-type (WT) rice plants. In this study, we tested the effectiveness of gibberellin (GA) on restoring more tillering phenotype and dwarfism observed in both SL biosynthesis and signaling mutants. The application of GA to these mutants rescued the tiller bud outgrowth; however, the sensitivity to GA was different between the WT and the SL biosynthesis mutant.

Thanatophoric dysplasia: a rare entity.

Thanatophoric dysplasia is the lethal skeletal dysplasia characterized by marked underdevelopment of the skeleton and short-limb dwarfism. The child will be having a short neck, narrow thoracic cage and protuberant abdomen. Other anatomical features include a relatively enlarged head with frontal bossing, prominent eyes, hypertelorism and the depressed nasal bridge. The diagnosis is usually made with the ultrasonography in the second trimester. In this study we report a case of this rare entity with emphasis on its anatomical features, abnormalities and clinical profile with relevant review of…

Clinical spectrum of fibroblast growth factor receptor mutations.

During the last few years, it has been demonstrated that some syndromic craniosynostosis and short-limb dwarfism syndromes, a heterogeneous group comprising of 11 distinct clinical entities, are caused by mutations in one of three fibroblast growth factor receptor genes (FGFR1, FGFR2, and FGFR3). The present review list all mutations described to date in these three genes and the phenotypes associated with them. In addition, the tentative phenotype-genotype correlation is discussed, including the most suggested causative mechanisms for these conditions.

The gene for achondroplasia maps to the telomeric region of chromosome 4p.

Achondroplasia is the most common type of genetic dwarfism. It is characterized by disproportionate short stature and other skeletal anomalies resulting from a defect in the maturation of the chondrocytes in the growth plate of the cartilage. We have now mapped the achondroplasia gene near the telomere of the short arm of chromosome 4 (4p16.3), by family linkage studies using 14 pedigrees. A positive lod score of z = 3.35 with no recombinants was obtained with an intragenic marker for IDUA. This localization will facilitate the positional cloning of the disease gene.

Dysspondyloenchondromatosis in the newborn. Report of four cases.

Dysspondyloenchondromatosis is a rare form of generalised enchondromatosis with hypoplastic/dysplastic changes in the lower thoracic and upper lumbar spine. The disease presents at birth as neonatal dwarfism and is characterised later in life by marked shortening of stature, unequal length of the extremities and early development of kyphoscoliosis. We report four newborn babies--three boys and a girl--with dysspondyloenchondromatosis, who had skeletal survey performed shortly after birth. The condition can be established in the newborn, as the radiographic examination (skeletal survey) shows d…

The impact of genetic syndromes on children's growth.

Genetic syndromes that include short stature are recognized by their effect on children's growth rates, by their effect on the growth rate and pubertal development in adolescence, and by the presence of stigmata associated with certain syndromes. The effects of Down, Seckel, Turner, Russell-Silver, Prader-Willi, and Noonan syndromes on growth and the growth-inhibiting features of achondroplasia, hypophosphatemic rickets, and Laron dwarfism are reviewed. The terminology used by professionals in discussing genetic alterations should minimize the effects of labeling and stigmatization and should …

New autosomal recessive chondrodysplasia--pseudohermaphrodism syndrome.

Two siblings with a previously undescribed syndrome are presented. They both have severe dwarfism, antenatal in origin, with generalized chondrodysplasia, severe microcephaly with cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, a hypoplastic iris and a papillous coloboma (Coloboma of the optic disc). The first sibling has a 46,XY karyotype despite normal female internal and external genitalia. She has moderate mental retardation. Gestation of the second sibling was interrupted after antenatal diagnosis. The fetus was 46,XX and very similar to the first case.

A new type of spondylo-metaphyseal dysplasia--Algerian type. Report of five cases.

A new, dominantly inherited, severe form of spondylometaphyseal dysplasia in five members of an Algerian family is reported. Another child, not investigated, was also probably affected. The disease is characterised by a unique clinical and radiological set of features: dwarfism, genu valgum deformity, progressive kypho-scoliosis, wrist deformity, myopia and severe metaphyseal dysplasia, with moderate spinal changes and minimal changes in the hands and feet. In view of the geographical localisation of the disorder and the anatomical distribution we propose the name Algerian type of spondylo-met…

[A rare polydysmorphic syndrome: leprechaunism. Review of 49 cases reported in the literature].

Leprechaunism is a very rare condition of obscure etiology. Since the first report (Donohue, 1948) 48 patients have been described. The typical stigmata are a "gnome" facies with a saddle nose, broad mouth, large and low-set ears, hirsutism, cutis laxa with atrophy of adipose tissue, dwarfism, extreme wasting, and dysphagia requiring parenteral feeding. After reviewing the literature and discussing the morphological, biological, and etiopathogenetic aspects, the authors conclude that the diagnosis of leprechaunism is essentially a clinic one, as there are no specific laboratory tests.

Identification and expression analysis of short internodes related sequence (SRS) gene families in litchi and longan, with functional characterization of LcSRS5 and DlSRS4 in dwarfing regulation.

Dwarfism is a significant and desirable trait in the cultivation of horticultural crops. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying dwarfism in perennial fruit trees remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the role of SRS genes in regulating plant height in Sapindaceae fruit trees, specifically litchi and longan. A total of five litchi SHORT INTERNODES (SHI)-related sequence genes (LcSRS) and four longan DlSRS genes were identified. Expression profile analysis in different tissues demonstrated that LcSRS1-LcSRS5 and DlSRS4 genes exhibited distinct expression patterns, with …

Pathogenicity of duck circovirus and novel goose parvovirus co-infection in SPF ducks.

Duck circovirus (DuCV) is one of the most prevalent infectious viruses in the duck industry in China. Although the clinical signs vary, it often causes immunosuppression in the host and leads to secondary infection with other pathogens. Novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) mainly infects ducks and causes short beak and dwarfism syndrome in ducks. However, the incidence of infection in ducks has increased in recent years, and the phenomenon of mixed infection with DuCV is common, resulting in more severe clinical morbidity. However, there are no systematic studies evaluating the presence of mixed infe…

Frog size on continental islands of the coast of Rio de Janeiro and the generality of the Island Rule.

Island Rule postulated that individuals on islands tend to dwarfism when individuals from mainland populations are large and to gigantism when mainland populations present small individuals. There has been much discussion about this rule, but only few studies were carried out aiming to reveal this pattern for anurans. Our study focused on measuring the size of individuals on islands and to find a possible pattern of size modification for insular anurans. Individuals were collected on continental islands, measured and compared to mainland populations. We selected four species with different nat…
