BACKGROUND: Hereditary spherocytosis (HS), a familial hemolytic disorder caused by red blood cell membrane defects, leads to increased red blood cell destruction. It manifests as jaundice, hemolytic anemia, and splenomegaly. HS patients, due to chronic hemolysis, are prone to developing bile duct or gallbladder stones, and some primarily present with 'cholelithiasis' as their main clinical manifestation.

Pediatric soft tissue infections (STIs) are frequently seen disorders that represent one of the most common indications for antimicrobial therapy. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 242 patients who were hospitalized with STIs during the period from January 2000 to January 2004. A 51-year-old white man of Irish extraction was found to have apparent 'sporadic' hereditary spherocytosis with a reticulocyte count of 6%. Twelve of his 13 siblings were examined and found to be haematologically normal. The patient's erythrocytes were found to have a diminished amount of spectrin as compared to his siblings and to unrelated controls. It is suggested that the proband may represent either a new mutant or possibly double heterozygosity for two inherited biochemical variants of the red cell membrane skeleton which individually give no haematological abnormalities.

We studied a group of 114 persons living together with children admitted in the hospital because of poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis; minute count of the urinary sediment, antistreptolysin 0 and throat culture were done. An increased was found in the urinary excretion of erythrocytes in 31% of the population studied; 71% showed a rise of serum antistreptolysin 0 and 9% showed beta hemolytic streptococci in their throat culture. Susceptibility levels of the Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus and the roof rat, Rattus rattus to bromadiolone anticoagulant rodenticide by bioassay and biochemical methods were studied. Animals were trapped from Giza and Qualyobia Governorates in which the anticoagulant rodenticides were used to control rodents for long periods. Complete mortality was obtained for both species and sexes within standard no-choice feeding test period (4 days) indicating bromadiolone susceptibility. The thrombotic tendency in two breeds of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) was assessed by inducing occlusive thrombosis in pial blood vessels using a helium-neon laser method. A strain of Trypanosoma evansi isolated from an equine case of surra in Mindanao, Philippines was used to infect intravenously two groups (A and B) of five male goats aged 8-10 months.
