The preterm prediction study: patterns of cervicovaginal fetal fibronectin as predictors of spontaneous preterm delivery. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to determine how various temporal patterns of fetal fibronectin positivity from 24 to 30 weeks predict subsequent fetal fibronectin test results and spontaneous preterm delivery. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 2929 women had vaginal and cervical fetal fibronectin tests obtained at least once at 24, 26, 28, or 30 weeks, and 1870 women had tests performed at all four gestational ages. Fetal fibronectin values > or = 50 ng/ml were considered positive. Various patterns of positive and negative tests were evaluated for prediction of (1) whether the next fetal fibronectin test

Off-the-shelf acellular fetal skin scaffold as a novel alternative to buccal mucosa graft: the development and characterization of human tissue-engineered fetal matrix in rabbit model of hypospadiasis.

AIM: In this study, we aimed to develop a novel alternative to buccal mucosal graft from the acellular human fetal skin to manage hypospadias in a rabbit model. We optimized the decellularization protocol to develop and characterize the human tissue-engineered fetal dermal matrix as an "off-the-shelf" natural biomaterial. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Human fetal skin was obtained at 16-19 weeks gestational age with respect to a signed informed consent from parents under the university ethical committee approval. The dissected full-thickness fetal skin tissues were placed into SDS and Triton X-100 in

Cooking Oil-Derived Aldehydes: Overlooked Components of the Western Diet with the Potential to Disrupt Fetal Brain Development.

Dietitians routinely recommend refined high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content culinary oils such as soybean, corn, canola, rapeseed and sunflower oils to pregnant women. Unfortunately, these PUFAs readily undergo peroxidation (especially at high frying or cooking temperatures), generating toxic lipid oxidation products, including reactive aldehydes and oxidized lipid mediators with established biological activities that may negatively impact fetal brain development. This hypothesis-driven perspective paper proposes a conceptual framework linking the maternal consumption of oils contami

Effects of subclinical pregnancy toxemia and L-carnitine supplementation on angiogenesis, energy metabolism, and fetal development in ewes.

Subclinical pregnancy toxemia (SPT) is a common metabolic disorder affecting small ruminants during late gestation under conditions of negative energy balance. This study investigated the effects of experimentally induced SPT on angiogenesis-related gene expression in uterine and placental tissues, hepatic energy metabolism-related gene expression, fetal and placental development, and selected serum biochemical parameters in ewes. The potential protective effects of L-carnitine supplementation were also evaluated. Nineteen crossbred Hamdani ewes were assigned to three groups: SPT (G1, n = 6),

Prenatal serotonin reuptake inhibitor exposure and maternal depression symptoms are associated with altered fetal brain and placental development.

Maternal mental health is associated with fetal neurodevelopment. Identifying effective treatments for maternal psychiatric conditions is a public health priority. SRIs (SSRIs and SNRIs) are commonly prescribed for prenatal mental health conditions; however, their impact on fetal brain development remains understudied. In this observational cohort study, we compared fetal brain and placental structures between SRI-exposed and unexposed pregnancies divided by categories of maternal depressive symptom severity from the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Pregnant women treated with SRIs

Hereditary PCOS and the environmental toxicant F-53B converge on lipid metabolic reprogramming to impair fetal brain development.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring, yet how maternal PCOS interacts with environmental toxicants to influence fetal brain development remains unclear. We hypothesized that an AMH-programmed PCOS-like background increases neurodevelopmental vulnerability, which is worsened by gestational F-53B exposure through lipid metabolic reprogramming. Our study reveals how endocrine-metabolic dysfunction and environmental toxicants interact to impact fetal brain development. F0 dams were exposed to anti Müllerian hormone in lat

Predictive Models Using Machine Learning to Identify Fetal Growth Restriction in Patients With Preeclampsia: Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common complication of preeclampsia. FGR in patients with preeclampsia increases the risk of neonatal-perinatal mortality and morbidity. However, previous prediction methods for FGR are class-biased or clinically unexplainable, which makes it difficult to apply to clinical practice, leading to a relative delay in intervention and a lack of effective treatments. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to develop an auxiliary diagnostic model based on machine learning (ML) to predict the occurrence of FGR in patients with preeclampsia. METHODS: This study used

Relationship Between Maternal Plasma Retinol and Provitamin A Carotenoids With Fetal and Infant Kidney Development: A Comprehensive Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin A (retinol) is essential for fetal organ development, with preclinical studies associating maternal vitamin A deficiency (VAD) with reduced nephron numbers, smaller kidneys, and higher chronic kidney disease risk later in life. However, similar findings in humans are limited, and no studies in Nebraska have examined maternal VAD's effect on fetal and infant kidney development, despite 10% of mothers being deficient at delivery. Additionally, the impact of provitamin A compounds (α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin) on kidney size remains unexplored. This study addresses

Di-n-butyl phthalate induces toxicity in male fetal mouse testicular development by regulating the MAPK signaling pathway.

"White pollution" has a significant impact on male reproduction. Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the most important factors in this type of pollution. Currently, research from international sources has demonstrated the significant reproductive toxicity of DBP. However, most of these studies have focused mainly on hormones expression at the protein and mRNA levels and the specific molecular targets of DBP and its mechanisms of action remain unclear. In this study, we established a Sprague Dawley pregnant mouse model exposed to DBP, and all male offspring were immediately euthanized at birt

Assessment of fetal development during mid and late term pregnancies by standard B-Mode ultrasonography in Shetland ponies.

Transrectal and transabdominal ultrasonography is an established method to monitor pregnancy, fetal growth and wellbeing in different species. Growth charts with multiple bio-morphometric parameters to estimate days of gestation and days before parturition exist in small companion animals, sheep and goats, riding type horses and large ponies but not in small horse breeds like Shetland ponies. The aim of this study was to apply fetal biometric assessment and detailed description of physiologic fetal development to mid and late term pregnancies in Shetland mares and to generate reference data fo…

Effects of azithromycin exposure during pregnancy at different stages, doses and courses on testicular development in fetal mice.

Azithromycin is a commonly used antibiotic during pregnancy, but some studies have suggested its potential developmental toxicity. Currently, the effects and mechanisms of prenatal azithromycin exposure (PAzE) on fetal testicular development are still unclear. The effects of prenatal exposure to the same drug on fetal testicular development could vary depending on different stages, doses, and courses. Hence, in this study, based on clinical medication characteristics, Kunming mice was administered intragastrically with azithromycin at different stages (mid-/late-pregnancy), doses (50, 100, 200

MicroRNAs in Small Extracellular Vesicles from Amniotic Fluid and Maternal Plasma Associated with Fetal Palate Development in Mice.

Cleft palate (CP) is a common congenital birth defect. Cellular and morphological processes change dynamically during palatogenesis, and any disturbance in this process could result in CP. However, the molecular mechanisms steering this fundamental phase remain unclear. One study suggesting a role for miRNAs in palate development via maternal small extracellular vesicles (SEVs) drew our attention to their potential involvement in palatogenesis. In this study, we used an in vitro model to determine how SEVs derived from amniotic fluid (ASVs) and maternal plasma (MSVs) influence the biological b

Association between Maternal Choline, Fetal Brain Development, and Child Neurocognition: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Human Studies.

We studied associations between prenatal and early postnatal choline intake, brain development, and neurocognitive function of children. We conducted a systematic review followed by a meta-analysis and critical appraisal of human studies published from 1997 to 2021. Thirty publications were identified. The meta-analysis included 5 of 7 case-control studies studying neural tube defects (NTDs) in relation to maternal choline intakes/circulating concentrations. Low maternal choline intake/circulating concentrations were associated with a higher OR for NTDs among 1131 mothers of newborns with NTDs

miR-1227-3p participates in the development of fetal growth restriction via regulating trophoblast cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a common obstetric disease, which is harmful to the pregnant women and fetuses. It has many influencing factors, but the specific etiology is not clear. MiRNA plays an important role in the fetal growth and development. In this article, we use TaqMan Low-Density Array to screen and analyze the differently expressed miRNAs in FGR-affected placenta (n = 40) and the normal placenta (n = 40). A total of 139 abnormally expressed miRNAs in the FGR-affected placenta were identified, and miR-1227-3p was the most highly downregulated miRNA. Importantly, miR-1227-3p may
