The article reports a rare case of a 30-year-old man with Hirschsprung's disease, who developed a giant fecalith in the rectum and sigmoid (weight 3.5 kg, the largest diameter 20 cm). The fecalith impaired urine flow by compressing urinary tract, thereby causing acute urinary retention and right-sided hydronephrosis with acute obstructive pyelonephritis. Removing fecalith resulted in the patient recovery and normal functioning of genitourinary system.

Ureteric stones are a common cause of obstruction of the urinary tract, usually presenting with characteristic signs and symptoms, such as acute ureteric colic and hematuria. Occasionally, stones may present with non-specific symptoms such as low back pain and remain unidentified, leading to stone growth, chronic ureteric obstruction and complications such as hydronephrosis and renal damage. Here, we report a large ureteric stone in a cadaver with complete obstruction at the left ureterovesical junction, resulting in severe dilatation of the left ureter and renal pelvis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate renal pelvis diameters in human fetuses, to establish normative patterns of their growth and size during the second gestational trimester.
METHODS: We studied 140 kidneys (70 fetuses; 38 male, 32 female) ranging in age from 12-25 weeks' postconception. The renal pelvis was dissected and the transverse and longitudinal diameters were measured. The renal length, width, and thickness were assessed. To compare the quantitative data in both sexes, Student's t-test was used (P <.05).
RESULTS: The mean transverse diameter in male fetuses was 3.61 mm in the right side and 3.58

Imperforate hymen is a rare congenital malformation to present with symptoms in the neonatal period. We present a case of a 5-day-old neonate with a marked interlabial swelling causing urinary retention. Imaging revealed hydrometrocolpos, hydrosalpinx, and bilateral hydronephrosis. Additionally, our patient had polydactyly of both feet and hands, and laryngocele that have not been previously described in literature. Hymenectomy is the mainstay of management to prevent the development of hematocolpos, pain, and possible retrograde menstruation.

A 65-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographic removal of a common bile duct stone. Fever and epigastralgia developed after the procedure. Computed tomography revealed acute cholecystitis and acute pancreatitis at the pancreatic head region. Her symptoms subsided after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. However, fever and dysuria developed 1 month later. Intravenous urography confirmed right hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Ureteroscopy revealed stricture at the right upper ureter, and a double-J stent was placed. The pa…

This is a case report of an association between morphine administration and occurrence of hydronephrosis with acute renal failure. This premature female infant born at 27 weeks of gestation had moderate hydronephrosis with acute renal impairment while receiving morphine infusion for pain management after chest-tube insertion. All these findings were reversed after stopping morphine and urinary catheterization. Follow-up renal ultrasound and voiding cystourethrogram showed resolution of hydronephrosis with no evidence of vesicoureteral reflux. Morphine is associated with reversible hydronephros…

We report a case of Plasmodium vivax infection manifested as severe thrombocytopenia, bilateral hydronephrosis, and hypotension in a returning traveler from a malaria-endemic area in Venezuela. While most of the efforts to prevent malaria in travelers focus on the life-threatening consequences of Plasmodium falciparum malaria, nonimmune travelers who encounter infection with P vivax may also develop serious complications. This case highlights the importance of preventing malaria cases among nonimmune or semi-immune individuals traveling to P vivax-endemic areas.

We report a case of a giant renal artery aneurysm causing hydronephrosis that initially had erroneously been thought to be a renal cyst. Giant renal artery aneurysms greater than 10 cm in diameter are very rarely reported. The aneurysm was repaired successfully with kidney preservation and closure of the arterial fistula.

A 57-year-old male was referred to our hospital with a complaint of dizziness. Abdominal computed tomography and retrograde pyelography revealed a left renal tumor associated with hydronephrosis due to pelviureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction. A radical nephrectomy was performed and histological diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma. Only five cases of renal cell carcinoma with hydronephrosis due to PUJ obstruction have been previously reported in the Japanese literature.

The large neurofibromatic tumours developing in head, neck and abdominal cavity in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 make a serious clinical problem. In this report the case of 12 years old boy with benign abdominal tumor leading from nerve roots (S1-S2) is presented. He has been treated for 6 years. The other malignant neoplasms, additional congenital defects or neurological dysfunctions were not confirmed. The primary resection was not radical and adjuvant therapy (chemotherapy, hormonotherapy) was ineffective. Due to the progression and not coming to hospital in next 2 years severe obs

A full-term male infant was antenatally diagnosed to have left hydronephrosis. Post natal ultrasonography (US) and diuretic renography confirmed the diagnosis of left pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction. His clinical course was complicated by one episode of urinary tract infection. Serial US and diuretic renography showed no improvement in the obstruction. The patient underwent an Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty at nine months of age with no post-operative complications. The diagnosis and management of antenatally-diagnosed hydronephrosis are discussed.

UNLABELLED: Due to the high frequency of asymptomatic pyelocaliceal dilatations, most of them with prenatal diagnosis, the diagnosis of obstruction remains a major chance. Isotopic diuretic renogram (IDR) remains the basic diagnostic tool, although it has some pitfalls and undetermined diagnosis. To obviate them, several others tests have been used, such as diuretic Doppler ultrasound (DDU). The object of this paper is to determine its validity.
METHODS: All the patients with hydronephrosis and with grade II dilatation or bigger were studied wit DDU. The results were compared with those obtai…

A 78-year-old man presented huge hydronephrosis with a calculus in the left kidney, and underwent left nephroureterectomy under the diagnosis of renal pelvic and ureteral tumor. Histological examination disclosed renal pelvic and ureteral tumors featuring mixed histologic types of carcinoma. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was superior to computed tomography (CT) in its complete, detailed demonstration of the renal pelvic lesions. The imaging characteristics of CT, MR imaging, ultrasonography, and retrograde ureterography were discussed in the report.

Since new ultrafast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) might offer unique advantages for evaluating renal blood flow, anatomy and urinary excretion, we used this technique to characterize a rat model with congenital partial ureteropelvic junction obstruction. MRI of 9 rats from an inbred colony with unilateral congenital (nonsurgical) hydronephrosis was compared with the contralateral nonhydronephrotic kidney serving as control. Our new imaging technique consisted of a 1-minute ultrafast gradient recalled imaging sequence during the first minute (64 images per imaging time 960 milliseconds) afte…

The ultrasonographic findings of 4 patients with surgically confirmed urothelial tumors associated with calculic pyonephrosis are presented. All the involved were markedly enlarged and hydronephrotic with obstructive calculi, stigmata of pyonephrosis and, an echoic pelvic mass, extending in calyceas in 2 cases. The sonographic appearance correlated well with the gross pathological findings. The histological types were 2 squamous cell carcinomas, 1 adeno-squamous cell carcinoma and 1 transitional carcinoma. The chronic calculic irritation was proved to induce squamous and glandular metaplasia.

A fetus with Weyers oligodactyly was studied after a previous sibling had been born with that condition. Prenatal diagnosis was undertaken using ultrasound to visualize the long bones, which were found to be severely affected by the condition at 19 weeks of gestation. Most notable were the ulnae and fibulae, which were very short; the fetus had bilateral hydronephrosis.
