Skull base osteomyelitis: HBO as a therapeutic concept Effects on clinical and radiological results.

INTRODUCTION: Skull base osteomyelitis is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease. It usually occurs as a complication of severe otitis externa or infection in the nasopharynx, often in immunocompromised patients. The therapeutic strategy is complex, patient-specific and requires interdisciplinary cooperation. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective evaluation of all patients with skull base osteomyelitis at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the University Hospital Duesseldorf from 2006 to 2023 was carried out. It was investigated which factors, in addition to treatment regimens (

Evaluation of Glutamine Utilization in Patients With Sickle Cell Disease.

Glutamine (Gln) was FDA-approved in 2017 to reduce acute sickle cell disease (SCD) pain and acute chest syndrome. However, typical pediatric patients with SCD exhibit moderate adherence, measured by a medication possession ratio <80%. This study examined Gln utilization in a "real-world" clinical setting to determine factors influencing medication adherence and to characterize the impact of an interdisciplinary team approach at an institution with specialty pharmacy services. A retrospective chart review identified 40 patients prescribed Gln by sickle cell specialists over a 2-year period and

Engaging Frontline Providers Prevents Hypothermia and Improves Communication in the Postoperative Neonate.

BACKGROUND: Neonates undergoing surgery are at high risk for perioperative hypothermia. Hypothermia has been associated with increased adverse events. Transfer of care from the operating room (OR) to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) adds another layer of risk for this population introducing the potential for miscommunication leading to preventable adverse events. PURPOSE: The aim of this quality improvement initiative is to decrease mean postoperative hypothermia rate and achieve compliance with use of a standardized postoperative hand-off in neonates transferred to the NICU from the O

Screening for psychosocial distress among patients with cancer: implications for clinical practice, healthcare policy, and dissemination to enhance cancer survivorship.

Accreditation standards are at the forefront of evolving healthcare systems, setting metrics for high-quality care. Healthcare outcomes (health, experience, cost, provider satisfaction/burn out) are becoming mutual goals of the patient, provider, payer, and healthcare system. Achieving high-quality outcomes in cancer care necessitates collaboration among interdisciplinary teams of clinical providers, administrators, patient advocates, caregivers, and researchers. Dissemination and implementation science provides necessary frameworks to organize the efforts of these implementation teams, inclus

Neonatal brachial plexus palsy: obstetric factors associated with litigation.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to compare characteristics between neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) cases that were litigated versus those that were not. STUDY DESIGN: From May to December 2012, the University of Michigan Interdisciplinary Brachial Plexus Program surveyed 51 consecutive families whose children were treated for NBPP. Obstetric data was self-reported. Unless NBPP resolved, children were followed for at least two years. Student's t-test and Chi-square test with odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS: Among 51 families surveyed, obstetric data were av

A Quasi-Experimental Study of an Online Communication Partner Training Program for Orthoptic Students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Current clinical practice guidelines recommend communication partner training (CPT) for healthcare professionals to maximise effective communication when providing care to clients with an acquired brain injury (ABI) from stroke and traumatic brain injury. Orthoptists are eye care professionals who work with people with ABI who often have concurrent communication and visual impairments. However, CPT studies often do not include orthoptists, and training programs seldom explicitly address the intersection of vision and challenges to common supportive communication strategies

Assessing Dysphagia in the Child.

Swallowing problems in children can occur for a variety of reasons, and assessment varies based on the age of the child, underlying medical problems, and results of the clinical swallow evaluation. The need for interdisciplinary management with speech language pathologists skilled in the management of children with dysphagia is imperative to identify the components of swallowing that are impaired and provide specific recommendations for safe and adequate nutrition supporting growth, development, and oral feeding if possible. This study focuses on the types of assessment tools available and how

Molecular Models of Toxoplasma gondii in Humans and Animals.

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an obligate intracellular, zoonotic protozoan parasite of interest to physicians and veterinarians with its highly complex structure. It is known to infect about one-third of the world's population. Since it is a zoonotic disease, it is necessary to keep the animal population under control in order to prevent human exposure. Many studies have been conducted on the detection of T. gondii and it has been determined that there are three clonal groups consisting of types 1, 2, 3. Developments in molecular studies have led to changes in the taxonomy and new developm

Challenges and unmet needs of [18F]fluorocholine PET in hyperparathyroidism: A framework for refining current practice and advancing parathyroid imaging.

The advent of [18F]fluorocholine (FCH) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has enhanced the diagnostic performance of preoperative imaging in patients with primary and renal hyperparathyroidism (HPT) during the past decade [1, 2]. Numerous studies and meta-analyses have confirmed the excellent performance of FCH PET, including in complex cases (i.e., inconclusive or negative results on parathyroid scintigraphy, recurrence, renal hyperparathyroidism (HPT), multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1)-related pHPT), with diagnostic accurac

IPNA clinical practice recommendations for the diagnosis and management of children with IgA nephropathy and IgA vasculitis nephritis.

IgA nephropathy and IgA vasculitis with nephritis, albeit rare, represent two relatively frequent glomerular conditions in childhood. Compared to adults, pediatric IgA nephropathy has a more acute presentation, most frequently with synpharyngitic macrohematuria and histologically with more intense inflammation and less intense chronic damage. Management of these conditions is controversial and supported by little high-quality evidence. The paucity of evidence is due to the disease heterogeneity, its inter-ethnic variability, and the difficulty of extrapolating data from adult studies due to th

Opinion article: Neurosurgical treatment for neuro-ophthalmologic conditions.

A significant role of the neuro-ophthalmologist is to counsel patients on appropriate management and anticipated visual prognosis for conditions affecting the afferent and efferent visual systems, including those requiring neurosurgical treatment. However, the literature regarding anticipated neuro- ophthalmologic prognosis after neurosurgical intervention for cerebral aneurysms, sellar lesions, optic pathway tumors, and elevated intracranial pressure is limited with many key questions unanswered. For example, if a cerebral aneurysm is equally amenable to clipping or endovascular coiling, is t

Non-Spinal Neuromodulation of the Lumbar Medial Branch Nerve for Chronic Axial Low Back Pain: A Narrative Review.

Chronic low back pain remains highly prevalent, costly, and the leading cause of disability worldwide. Symptoms are complex and treatment involves an interdisciplinary approach. Due to diverse anatomical etiologies, treatment outcomes with interventional options are highly variable. A novel approach to treating chronic axial low back pain entails the use of peripheral nerve stimulation to the lumbar medial branch nerve, and this review examines the clinical data of the two different, commercially available, non-spinal neuromodulation systems. This review provides the clinician a succinct narra
