Research on incarcerated offenders trained to help prisoners change is rare because programs that equip inmates with practical capacities for helping others rehabilitate in prison hardly exist. An exception is the Field Ministry program in Texas, which enlists inmates who have graduated from a prison-based seminary to work as "Field Ministers" and serve other inmates in various capacities. We hypothesize that inmate exposure to Field Ministers is inversely related to antisocial factors and positively to prosocial ones. We applied manifest-variable structural equation modeling to analyze data f

The Hospice Palliative Care Association (HPCA) was established in 1987 by hospices in South Africa who felt the need for a national body to share best practices and to promote palliative care services in South Africa. HPCA supports member hospices in providing palliative care to people of any age with a life-limiting condition. HPCA has the further aim to ensure access to palliative care in settings other than member hospices. Many projects were launched over the years to influence policy, and to educate medical practitioners, nurses, social workers, theologians, and community caregiver; and t

When Alfred Blalock (1899-1965), the pioneer Hopkins surgical professor, saw the pulmonary artery suturing technique that his laboratory technician, Vivien Thomas (1910-1985), had just performed in a dog, his level of astonishment was so high that he expressed, "Vivien, this looks like Something the Lord Made." In all his years of practice, Dr. Blalock had never seen anything like it before. The level of perfection was so superior to other works that it could not be considered to be of human descent. The surgical technician far exceeded anyone else in the surgical department. In due time, he t

INTRODUCTION: The minority tax is an understudied phenomenon by which underrepresented in medicine (URiM) physicians are more often responsible for nonpromotable activities: mentorship, education, outreach, and committee service. This review aims to summarize definitions of minority tax, explore its possible impact in academic surgery, and present gaps in the literature.
METHODS: A systematic search across SCOPUS, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ERIC, and PsycINFO was conducted. Original research articles studying URiM individuals in academic medicine/surgery were eligible. A priori outcomes of interest wer

OBJECTIVE: Health systems undertaking electronic health record (EHR) transitions often struggle to prepare and support clinicians in learning and using the new system. We evaluated a national peer coaching program-the National EHRM Supplemental Staffing Unit (NESSU)-designed to support clinicians during the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA's) transition to a new EHR. Our goal was to assess NESSU's reach, perceived usefulness, and association with key EHR user outcomes, and to characterize how NESSU achieved its observed impacts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a convergent mixed-methods

This community case study examines the 3for1 intervention program, a multidisciplinary intervention designed to support individuals affected by unemployment experiencing psychological distress. The program integrates short-term psychotherapy, job coaching based on the approach of Individual Placement and Support (IPS), and peer support. Thus, individuals affected by complex and interrelated psychosocial challenges can find support through individualized, low-threshold care. Two participants are presented: Participant A regained employment, Participant B primarily improved mental health outcome

BACKGROUND: In an evolving global workforce, soft skills (personal, non-technical) are increasingly essential, yet individuals with intellectual disabilities face employment barriers. Sports participation offers a unique context to foster these skills, but coaches' awareness and strategies to support their development remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore coaches' perspectives on the role of sport in fostering soft skills among athletes with intellectual disabilities and their relevance for employability.
METHOD: Underpinned by a pragmatic paradigm, this study interviewed 30 licen

Global health research continues to rely heavily on knowledge generated outside the regions that bear the greatest disease burden, reinforcing structural inequities in scientific leadership and innovation. The GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Africa Open Lab (AOL) was established to address this imbalance by investing directly in African-led research capacity. This reflective analysis examined how participation in the inaugural GSL-AOL cohort influenced research capacity, scientific independence, and career development among early-career African researchers. The reflection was guided by the question: How

BACKGROUND: Peer recovery coaches (PRCs) have experienced addiction and are trained to help others in recovery. Indigenous American (IA) adult PRCs may fill gaps of culturally specific support in addiction.
AIMS: The aims were to: (1) evaluate the feasibility of implementing a PRC intervention compared to an attention control group recovering from a substance use disorder, (2) compare PRC and attention control groups on relapses and secondary outcomes, and (3) measure PRC strategies.
METHODS: In this feasibility trial, we recruited a total of 120 adult IAs with substance use disorders. Ninet

INTRODUCTION: Home hemodialysis (home HD) has demonstrated superior clinical outcomes, improved quality of life, and enhanced treatment flexibility in comparison to 3 days/week in-center HDs. Nonetheless, some patients are discordant with their dialysis prescription and require a coaching program in order to maintain their normal lifestyle and ameliorate their illness behavior.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the feasibility of conducting a nurse-led coaching program for discordant home HD patients and its effect on hospitalization and technique complications.
METHODS: This is a retrospective single

INTRODUCTION: High quality hospital care for serious ill persons requires exemplary team-based communication and decision-making. However, there is a need for evidence-based interventions in this area. This study's aim is to gain insight in the adoption and implementation of the COaching Doctors to improve Ethical decision-making (CODE) intervention, composed of one-on-one professional coaching in doctors and an alert to identify patients potentially receiving excessive treatment.
METHODS: Mixed-method process evaluation study using focus group interviews, sub-analysis of the ethical decision

BACKGROUND: Group peer telementoring supports interprofessional learning through multi-directional and synchronous engagement where experienced and knowledgeable individuals exchange guidance and support with differently experienced and knowledgeable individuals. A leading example of group peer telementoring among medical specialists and medical generalists is Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (Project ECHO), a rapidly spreading program with demonstrated learning outcomes among community-based medical generalists. Yet the multi-directional exchanges that characterize group pe…

BACKGROUND: Working memory training (WMT) can offer therapeutic benefits to patients with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) and mild to borderline intellectual disability (MBID). However, consistent evidence for treatment benefits of WMT over placebo training is missing. So far, participants in double-blind research designs did receive non-specific coaching, whereas active coaching based on individual training results might increase the efficacy of WMT. Furthermore, the intensity and duration of WMT is often too stressful for these children. This study therefore investigated whether a less in

BACKGROUND: Children and women in urban informal settlements have fewer choices to access quality maternal and newborn health care. Many facilities serving these communities are under-resourced and staffed by fewer providers with limited access to skills updates. We sought to increase provider capacity by equipping them with skills to provide general and emergency obstetric and newborn care in 24 facilities serving two informal settlements in Nairobi. We present evidence of the combined effect of mentorship using facility-based mentors who demonstrate skills, support skills drills training, an

INTRODUCTION: Few interventions to improve contraceptive continuation are tailored to meet the developmental needs of young women under age 25 years. The Health Coaching for Contraceptive Continuation (HC3) intervention was designed to address this gap. In this special report, we describe the rationale for using health coaching, conceptual framework, intervention processes, and findings from a single-arm feasibility study of the intervention protocol.
METHODOLOGY: Health coaching is a person-centered behavioral change approach organized around five main strategies: providing education relevan
