Does calcemia influence the onset of myringosclerosis after myringotomy with the insertion of ventilation tubes?

INTRODUCTION: Myringosclerosis is one of the most frequent late complications of the insertion of ventilation tubes, and its aetiopathogenesis remains unknown. The calcification that occurs in the formation of myringosclerosis plaque raises the hypothesis of the presence of a calcium metabolism disorder. The objective is to determine whether calcemia contributes to the development of myringoscelerosis after insertion of ventilation tubes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A longitudinal, prospective, analytical cohort study was conducted in patients undergoing myringotomy with the insertion of ventilatio

High frequency hearing loss associated with otitis media.

OBJECTIVE: Long-term effects of otitis media (OM) on hearing in both conventional and high frequency (HF) regions in children were studied. DESIGN: Children with OM were enrolled in a prospective study of sequelae after tympanostomy tube insertion (intubation) and were examined serially at 6-mo intervals with audiometry and multifrequency tympanometry, and every 3 mo with tympanometry and otoscopy for at least 3, and up to 5 yr. Hearing thresholds in conventional and HF regions were compared with those of an age-matched control group of children who had 2 or fewer documented episodes of any t

Clear Tinnitus, middle-ear pressure, and tinnitus relief: a prospective trial.

GOAL: Our goal was to establish the efficacy, in a 12-week period, of Clear Tinnitus for tinnitus relief in patients with tinnitus of the severe, disabling type. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that tinnitus relief with Clear Tinnitus reflects improvement in the sensory component of the tinnitus complaint by controlling the factor of aeration of the middle ears and improving eustachian tube function. METHOD: In a prospective clinical trial of a homeopathic preparation--Clear Tinnitus--we attempted to identify in 15 tinnitus patients (14 male, 1 female; mean age, 47.6 years) its clinical efficacy

Facial nerve paralysis in chronic suppurative otitis media: Ankara Numune Hospital experience.

Although the incidence of facial nerve paralysis (FNP) decreased with the use of contemporary diagnostic tools and the advent of antibiotics, it is still a challenging problem. In this retrospective study, the charts of 1188 patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), treated between 1988 and 1996 in the First ENT Clinic of Ankara Numune Hospital, Turkey, were analysed to establish the pre-operative incidence of FNP in CSOM. There were 20 (1.7%) patients with FNP secondary to CSOM. Of these, 14 (70%) had cholesteatoma. There was a defect on the fallopian canal in 14 patients (70%) a

Impact of Ventilation Tubes on Pediatric Otitis Media Outcomes: A Retrospective Study From Saudi Arabia.

INTRODUCTION: Acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME) are common in children, often leading to hearing loss and developmental delay. Ventilation tubes (VTs) manage persistent middle ear effusions by draining fluid and reducing pressure, which can decrease AOM recurrence. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective cohort study reviewed the medical records of 388 pediatric patients at King Faisal Medical Complex, Saudi Arabia, from August 2021 to February 2024. Data on demographics, tympanometry results, treatment outcomes, and surgical interventions were collected. The data was anal

Role of Biofilms in Post-Tympanostomy Tube Otorrhea.

OBJECTIVE: Nearly half of children who undergo tympanostomy tube (TT) insertion may experience otorrhea following surgery. We sought to review the evidence for the role of bacterial biofilms in post-tympanostomy tube otorrhea (PTTO) and the accumulated experience regarding the preventive measures for biofilm formation/adhesion on TTs. METHODS: English literature search for relevant MeSH keywords was conducted in the following databases: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Ovid Medline, Google Scholar, and Clinical Evidence (BMJ Publishing) between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2019. Subsequently, artic

Evaluating short and long term outcomes following pediatric Myringoplasty with Gelfoam graft for tympanic membrane perforation following ventilation tube insertion.

BACKGROUND: Myringotomy with ventilation tube (VT) insertion to treat recurrent acute otitis media and chronic secretory otitis media has become one of the most common surgical procedures performed in children. Although contemporary literature has detailed the various patient and perioperative factors that affect successful pediatric myringoplasty, there is still limited evidence surrounding the increasing number of graft material options. In particular, gelfoam patching has arisen as a simple and efficient modality for perforation closure, but has a paucity of evidence particularly in pediatr

History of myringotomy and grommets.

The first recorded myringotomy was in 1649. Astley Cooper presented two papers to the Royal Society in 1801, based on his observation that myringotomy could improve hearing. Widespread inappropriate use of the procedure followed, with no benefit to patients; this led to it falling from favour for many decades. Hermann Schwartze reintroduced myringotomy later in the nineteenth century. It had been realised earlier that the tympanic membrane heals spontaneously, and much experimentation took place in attempting to keep the perforation open. The first described grommet was made of gold foil. Othe
