In certain animal species immediate separation of a mother from here young for a brief period after deliver (the sensitive period) may result in aberrant maternal behaviour. In the human, disorders of mothering, including child abuse, increase disproportionately in situations associated with early neonatal separation of mother and infant, such as prematurity. Mothers in the United States who were offered early contact with their premature infants showed differences in attachment behaviour when compared with mothers whose first contact with their infants was three weeks after delivery. Mothers

Determination of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in capillary blood can be of value in identifying neonates with infection. The normal values for the method described here range from 1 mm/l hour at 12 hours of age to 17 mm/l hour at 14 days of age. Most noninfected neonates with moderate to severe RDS or with other serious illness had values well within the normal range. Infected patients had marked elevations, and the majority of values returned to normal with clinical improvement. Coombs-positive ABO hemolytic disease was also responsible for elevated values. In about half of the infected

Human cyclic neutropenia is characterized by severe depression of blood neutrophil levels approximately every 21 days. To investigate the mechanism of cyclic neutropenia four patients were studied with daily complete blood counts, serial bone marrow examinations, marrow reserve testing, serum muramidase determinations, DF(22)P granulocytokinetic studies, and, in one patient, in vivo [(3)H]TdR labeling. Periodogram analysis of the serial blood counts in the latter patient and visual inspection of multiple cycles in the others revealed periodic fluctuations in the levels of blood neutrophils, mo

Nine members in three generations of a Chinese family were found to have Waardenburg's syndrome comprising, mainly, lateral displacement of the inner canthi, broadening of the nasal root and hypertrichosis of the eyebrows. Other minor features were also found. Two patients had in addition, hypokalemic periodic paralysis of the familial type, one had prominent frontal bossing and another, bilateral cleft lips and palate. These associated anomalies have not been previously documented and the presence of two autosomal dominant genetic defects in this family is of particular interest.
