OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of amlodipine in patients with severe ischaemic left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) and mild to moderate heart failure, but not current angina, assessing the effects of the drug on symptoms, left ventricular function and exercise capacity.

Poorly differentiated thyroid cancer is a rare thyroid cancer, accounts for approximately 5% of all thyroid cancer cases, and is associated with a poor prognosis. It commonly metastasizes to regional lymph nodes, lung, and bones. We present a patient with poorly differentiated thyroid cancer with unusual extensive spread to mediastinal blood vessels.

Although vestibular schwannoma is a common tumor in the cerebellopontine angle, calcified vestibular schwannoma is rare. A 59-year-old woman with sudden onset epileptic seizures, was referred to Hokkaido Neurosurgical Memorial Hospital. Neurological examination revealed left Bruns nystagmus, left deafness and left cerebellar ataxia. Brain MRI revealed a mass, about 3cm in diameter, in the left cerebellopontine angle. The mass showed heterogeneous intensity on T1- and T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. Hydrocephalus was seen. On CT scan, the tumor was calcified.

A 7-year experience involving 12 cases of massive, unrelenting lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage is presented. In these patients, the bleeding could not be localized by multiple diagnostic modalities and was managed by blind subtotal colectomy. While the procedure was efficacious in arresting bleeding in all cases, a resultant mortality of four cases (33%) ensued. Morbidity among the survivors was significant. Serial dynamic studies with 99mTc-DTPA are a useful method of monitoring renal transplants.
