The effect of information and progressive relaxation exercises before the planned cesarean section on primigravida women's surgical fear, anxiety, pain and postpartum comfort: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND : Elective cesarean section rates continue to rise worldwide, and women frequently experience preoperative fear and anxiety, which negatively affect perioperative outcomes, pain perception, and postpartum recovery. Non-pharmacological interventions such as relaxation exercises are increasingly encouraged to support maternal well-being and improve surgical outcomes. AIM : The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of Jacobson’s progressive relaxation exercise on primigravida women’s surgical fear, anxiety, postpartum comfort, and pain levels. METHOD : This two-group paralle

Study protocol of a breathing and relaxation intervention included in antenatal education: A randomised controlled trial (BreLax study).

BACKGROUND: Antenatal education is part of antenatal care in many countries. Physical and mental preparation for childbirth and information on pain management are considered key elements of antenatal education classes. Evidence suggests that women who participate in antenatal education classes appear to benefit in terms of self-efficacy and childbirth experience. In particular, women with increased fear of childbirth benefit from trained breathing and relaxation techniques in antenatal education. However, little is known about the effect of breathing and relaxation techniques on the outcomes o

Cultivating resiliency in patients with neurofibromatosis 2 who are deafened or have severe hearing loss: a live‑video randomized control trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with NF2 who are deaf or have significant hearing loss face numerous and unique challenges which lead to poor quality of life, and thus may benefit from resiliency programs. METHODS: We performed secondary data analyses on a single blind, randomized controlled trial of an 8 week mind-body resiliency program (the Relaxation Response and Resiliency program for Deaf NF2; d3RP-NF2) versus a health education control (Health Enhancement Program for Deaf NF2;dHEP-NF2) which showed improvement in quality of life (Funes in JAMA 2019, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11060-019-03182-3).

Group Qigong for Adolescent Inpatients with Anorexia Nervosa: Incentives and Barriers.

BACKGROUND: Qigong is a mind-body intervention focusing on interoceptive awareness that appears to be a promising approach in anorexia nervosa (AN). In 2008, as part of our multidimensional treatment program for adolescent inpatients with AN, we began a weekly qigong workshop that turned out to be popular among our adolescent patients. Moreover psychiatrists perceived clinical benefits that deserved further exploration. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A qualitative study therefore sought to obtain a deeper understanding of how young patients with severe AN experience qigong and to determine the incenti

An exploration of the hypothesis that testosterone is implicated in the psychological functioning of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

One of the diagnostic features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is elevation of the androgen, testosterone. It is known that women with PCOS are more likely to suffer from psychological problems, especially anxiety and depression, than other women. However, little is known of how much of this is due to testosterone, and if so, what the mechanism(s) might be. This study explores the hypothesis that testosterone impacts women with PCOS both directly and indirectly, via testosterone currently in the bloodstream and through prenatal exposure. It is hypothesised that direct effects occur when te

Promising effects of treatment with flotation-REST (restricted environmental stimulation technique) as an intervention for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): a randomized controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: During Flotation-REST a person is floating inside a quiet and dark tank, filled with heated salt saturated water. Deep relaxation and beneficial effects on e.g. stress, sleep difficulties, anxiety and depression have been documented in earlier research. Despite that treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are effective; it is till the least successfully treated anxiety disorder, indicating that treatment protocols can be enhanced. The use of Flotation-REST as a treatment of GAD has not been researched. The aim of the present study was to conduct an initial evaluation of t

[An integrative and transdiagnostic relaxation protocol for anxious patients. Results of a pilot study].

INTRODUCTION: The literature data show that relaxation practice is effective in reducing anxiety symptoms. Different techniques such as progressive muscular relaxation, autogenic training, applied relaxation and meditation have been evaluated independently for anxiety disorders. The question is to know whether the combination of various techniques may be of interest in the transdiagnostic treatment of anxiety disorders. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study assessed the short-term efficacy of a 10-week integrative and transdiagnostic relaxation program for anxiety disorders in outpatients of an

A randomized controlled trial on effects of the Transcendental Meditation program on blood pressure, psychological distress, and coping in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress contributes to the development of hypertension in young adults. This trial assessed the effects of a mind-body intervention on blood pressure (BP), psychological distress, and coping in college students. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 298 university students randomly allocated to either the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program or wait-list control. At baseline and after 3 months, BP, psychological distress, and coping ability were assessed. A subgroup of 159 subjects at risk for hypertension was analyzed similarly. RESULTS: Chang

[Adverse effects of quinine in the treatment of leg cramps].

In France, three over-the-counter products containing quinine exist to treat cramps. This study aims to analyse data on spontaneous reports to the French System of Pharmacovigilance of adverse reactions to quinine drug products. From 1985 to 1996, we reviewed 58 adverse reaction reports. Most involved hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritus, generalized anaphylaxis, thrombopenia and hepatitis. Cinchonism is rarely observed at the usually low dose of quinine in this indication. No fatal outcome has been notified as described in the USA and Australia. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) de

Relationships between anxiety sensitivity, hyperventilation, and emotional reactivity to displays of facial emotions.

Undergraduate women who scored in the top (n = 24) and bottom 15% (n = 24) on the Anxiety Sensitivity Index viewed randomly counterbalanced sets of three neutral and three dysphoric faces after having either hyperventilated or relaxed. Participants rated the amount of change they experienced in Happiness, Sadness, Fear, Anger, Surprise, Disgust, and Contempt after viewing each face. High Anxiety Sensitive (AS) women reported significantly greater changes on six of the seven emotions, even though pretreatment differences in somatically experienced anxiety were covaried out. Significant three-wa

Behavioral relaxation training for tremor disorders in older adults.

Two adult men, aged 86 and 63, with essential tremor and Parkinson's-disease-related tremor, respectively, were provided Behavioral Relaxation Training in reclined and upright seated positions. Multiple measures were recorded, including the Behavioral Relaxation Scale (BRS), clinical and self-rated tremor severity, informant ratings, ratings of disability in activities of daily living (ADL), and forearm EMG. Results showed increased relaxation skills on the BRS, with reductions in EMG, tremor ratings, and some ADL disabilities. Upright BRS scores did not change during reclined training, but im

Viscoelastic Niches Shape γδ T-Cell Phenotype and Effector Function.

γδ T-cells, which are predominantly enriched in epithelial tissues, have been used in cancer therapy because of their capacity for rapid cytotoxicity in an MHC-independent manner. Current paradigms are largely agnostic to the role of tissue mechanical cues in regulating γδ T-cell function. Here, we investigated the role of matrix viscoelasticity in modulating γδ T-cell migration, differentiation state, phenotype, and function. Using a tunable collagen-based gel system, we found that encapsulation in highly-elastic (slow-relaxing) matrices preserved a less differentiated phenotype, as evidenced

Surface modified iron-oxide based engineered nanomaterials for hyperthermia therapy of cancer cells.

Magnetic hyperthermia is emerging as a promising alternative to the currently available cancer treatment modalities. Superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are extensively studied functional nanomaterials for biomedical applications, owing to their tunable physio-chemical properties and magnetic properties. Out of various ferrite classes, spinel and inverse-spinel ferrites are widely used but are affected by particle size distribution, particle shape, particle-particle interaction, geometry, and crystallinity. Notably, their heating ability makes them suitable candidates for heat-

Subjective well-being in patients with chronic tension-type headache: effect of acupuncture, physical training, and relaxation training.

BACKGROUND: Episodic tension-type headache is a common problem affecting approximately 2 of 3 of the population. The origin of tension-type headache is multifactorial, but the pathogenesis is still unclear. In some individuals episodic tension-type headache transforms into chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). Subjective symptoms related to the central nervous system might affect patients subjective well-being and quality of life. OBJECTIVE: This study compared 3 nonpharmacologic treatments; acupuncture, relaxation training, and physical training on subjective well-being in patients with CTTH

Obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions as predictors of compliance with and response to behaviour therapy: results from a controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Recent factor-analytic studies in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) identified consistent symptom dimensions. Support for the validity of these dimensions comes from studies of psychiatric comorbidity, functional brain imaging, genetic transmission, and treatment response to medications. This study examined whether previously identified OCD symptom dimensions are associated with treatment compliance and response to behaviour therapy (BT) for OCD. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-three OCD outpatients who participated in a multi-centre randomised controlled trial of computer- versu
