Performing Microscope-Mounted Y-Shaped Cutting Tests.

Y-shaped cutting has recently been shown to be a promising method by which to understand the threshold length scale and failure energy of a material, as well as its failure response in the presence of excess deformation energy. The experimental apparatus used in these studies was vertically oriented and required cumbersome steps to adjust the angle between the Y-shaped legs. The vertical orientation prohibits visualization in standard optical microscopes. This protocol presents a Y-shaped cutting apparatus that mounts horizontally over an existing inverted microscope stage, can be adjusted in

Craniofacial height in relation to cross-sectional maxillary and mandibular morphology.

BACKGROUND: In order to gain a better understanding of how growth of the alveolar bone is linked to the vertical development of the face, the purpose of this study was to investigate if there is an association between the cross-sectional morphology of the maxillary and mandibular bodies with the craniofacial height, using images from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: From 450 pre-treatment CBCT scans, 180 were selected to be included in the study. Lateral head images were generated from the CBCT scans and were used to categorise subjects into three groups based on their vertical

The nasolabial fold: a photogrammetric analysis.

The nasolabial fold was analyzed by studying changes with aging in the nasolabial fold and adjacent soft-tissue features. Chronologic photographs were obtained from 19 older subjects, taken approximately every 10 years, from age 20 to their present age. In a separate phase of the study, facial portraits in repose and smiling were taken of young and old adult subjects with a mechanical frame used for setting an objective point of reference. Facial landmarks were identified and depth measurements were made in the anteroposterior direction. Relative lengths of selected points also were determined

Choosing the Best Procedure to Augment the Chin: Is Anything Better than an Implant?

The chin plays a very important role in overall facial appearance, and aesthetic procedures to augment the chin in patients with microgenia can improve overall facial balance. Many procedures exist to enhance the appearance of a small chin. Procedures include surgeries such as placement of an alloplast implant and bony osteotomy of the mentum (sliding genioplasty). The advantages and disadvantages of each surgical technique are well documented. Although surgical augmentation of the chin has been the gold standard of therapy, recent development of injectable filler products with lifting capacit

Communicating hydrocephalus in dogs with congenital ciliary dysfunction.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radionuclide ventriculography were performed in 5 dogs with congenital ciliary dysfunction (CDD) and 3 normal dogs. Ventricular and brain dimensions and volumes, and CSF flow rates were measured or calculated from the MR images and radionuclide clearance. All CCD dogs had hydrocephalus based on previously published criteria of a percent vertical brain dimension (PVBD) greater than 14%. The PVBD was significantly larger (p = 0.001) in the dogs with CCD (mean +/- SD) 33.00 +/- 5.42% than in normal dogs (11.07 +/- 0.61%. The ventricular volume was significantl

Vertical mammaplasty.

Current criticisms regarding vertical mammaplasty include problems with poor immediate postoperative appearance, nipple-areola complex malposition, and excessive lower pole length. These problems can be avoided by proper patient selection, by utilizing correct concepts of skin design, and by observing correct glandular resection and closure concepts. Vertical mammaplasty also can result in other problems, such as hypertrophic circumareolar scars and lower pole deformities, including notching, boxy shape, infra-areolar depression, and flatness. These problems are also largely avoidable by using

Three-dimensional Scheimpflug principle and its application to full-focus positioning.

The Scheimpflug principle specifies the relationship between the object, lens, and image planes, providing conditions for focusing the entire image plane even for tilted objects. This classical principle is confined to unidirectional tilting and has not been extended to camera systems with two-axis tilts. Herein, we present an extension of the Scheimpflug principle to three dimensions, demonstrating that images can be decomposed and focused independently in the vertical and horizontal directions. This simplifies focusing on the overall image, which requires a two-dimensional search, into a com

When vertically aligned carbon nanotube microstructures lose verticality: experimental and computational insights into geometry-dependent stability.

Patterned vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) microstructures are promising building blocks for three-dimensional carbon architectures, yet the geometric conditions governing preservation of their as-grown verticality remain poorly resolved. Here, we systematically map the loss of verticality of square VACNT microstructures over 16 combinations of catalyst footprint and growth condition, spanning lateral dimensions of 12.5-75 µm and footprint-specific mean heights of approximately 24-231 µm. As-grown deformation was quantified from scanning electron microscopy images using a dimensionle

Lateropulsion After Hemispheric Stroke: A Form of Spatial Neglect Involving Graviception.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that lateropulsion is an entity expressing an impaired body orientation with respect to gravity in relation to a biased graviception and spatial neglect. METHODS: Data from the DOBRAS cohort (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03203109) were collected 30 days after a first hemisphere stroke. Lateral body tilt, pushing, and resistance were assessed with the Scale for Contraversive Pushing. RESULTS: Among 220 individuals, 72% were upright and 28% showed lateropulsion (tilters [14%] less severe than pushers [14%]). The 3 signs had very high factor loadings (>0.90) on a sam
